  1. Sorry for the slight derail. I got to see if the BS5837 RPA recommendations made sense in a tree in south east India ;-) We dug near the calculated RPA to be sure to give accurate recommendations. Though this is only one tree, it was nice to see that the figures made sense (in my opinion). Attached is the report after the original survey and tree constraints plan. I would be curious to hear what you guys think of the recommendations and the findings (obviously it is not a tree in the UK and therefore cannot be compared to anything there). Cheers! Tree Ref. Minor wounds throughout. Abundant surface roots, typical of species. Coping well with dry summer through exhibition of new shoots. Minor crossing branches in the center of the crown. 3. Things are good here. Not enough arboriculture for my taste at the moment but bits and pieces. I am thinking of doing a month or two of surveys at some point in the UK to keep things up and maybe attend the amenity conference, but we will have to see what happens in the meantime. It is indeed a bit warmer here. Sounds pretty cold in the UK at present. Cheers!
  4. Cheers Gary! I hope all is well. There are no contact details on his website but I will try and contact Mick Boddy.
  5. Anyone know how to contact Claus? I would like a poster of the VTA as you have on your website in soft-copy, in high resolution, to be used in workshops and with no copyright infringements obviously. Workshops will be done in India. Cheers, Island
  6. Facebook works fine. I don't know what else to compare it to. Just the basic plugins. Adobe flash is up to date. Graphics cards up to date. I don't receive notifications from this website but I allow to load images... Any ideas what I could check?
  7. Hi, Just wondering if anyone techy has any ideas. I have not been able to load/view pictures including avatars on here for a while now. The ads show up fine... I first thought it was my internet connection but this is now definitely not the issue. I load Arbtalk on my wife's laptop and it loads everything fine. This laptop is better in every way (Alienware). It has just had a new motherboard put in (the problem was there before). Both firefox and Chrome act the same. I cleared the cache. I reset the browser to defaults. Both my wife's and my computer have the same setting in firefox as I am signed in to the browser on both pcs. Any ideas? Cheers, Island
  8. Great Post! I am a big fan of fusing though I have never come across two species inosculating. Anyway, I thought I would share these pics of not fusing but butt regrowth which makes me think these guys can probably fuse quite well. The original stem is 30-40 cms in dia. All the raised bits are alive and the rest is sand: Bombax ceiba https://photos.app.goo.gl/jP2C2mR9zS8d3CHP2
  9. Loved this one! Tried inserting the image from url but it did not work so please follow the link: https://goo.gl/photos/E8CK55YP6idRD4Lh6
  10. We had some wandering poplars and sycamores. Pretty cool how they all stayed standing mostly straight up: http://www.islandlescure.com/trees-that-surfed-on-a-landslide-by-the-river/
  11. It is sandy clay mostly. Soil sticks to digging bars and other tools.
  12. Thanks for the info! Yes I can and will have to soak areas to dig.
  13. Hi Just trying to get info on how good airspades are at digging. Here in India, the ground is super hard when it hasn't rained (most of the time) so I am wondering how effective it would be at digging trenches around tree roots for cabling or when wanting to transplant. Also I have read that it is quite messy. Is there anything else one could use such as a monster vacuum cleaner to do this sort of stuff? Any thoughts appreciated! Cheers, Island

  15. Cheers. All good though quite hot. I hope all is good with you!
  16. Hey! Cool stuff. What's the local soil type and how did the topography affect the tree? Cheers, Island
  17. Give it a shot. British Airways to India lets you take as much as you can carry in one bag on the plane carry-on:-P
  18. Cheers. I have just looked at BS3998 but it doesn't actually talk about this sort of thing... I figure leaving as much branch on as possible with a view that in the long term the smaller diameter branches will integrate better with epicormic and adventitious branches even if the tree will have to use more energy to maintain existing non energy producing parts. Also, any potential decay will be farther out from the main stem.
  19. This may seem like a stupid question, and considering I have a bit of experience and qualifications, I almost didn't ask it but; Where would you take these sorts of branches(end is around 20cm dia(some larger)) back to? There are epicormic or adventitious shoots just emerging from all along the branch. Some branches are very long but have no previous shoots present, only just emerging ones (<5cm long). Back till there is no torn bark? Back to the nearest shoots? The branch stores energy but also requires energy to sustain itself, plus it needs to compartmentalize, so better by a shoot but another meter plus down or until there is no torn bark but farther out? We left the branches stubbed in many instances with a view to come back in six months to re-assess and further "reduce" where necessary.... Thanks for the linterest.
  20. I have some Acacia auriculiformis but you'll have to come to India to pick it up:-P
  21. Are these the Rock Exotica models? CE marked? I don't see any markings....
