  1. I am just curious, why did it blow over in the first place? Are there girdling roots? Did the roots tear? Was the area flooded which could have caused the tree's root system to lose grip under high winds? Is the soil around the base generally saturated with water? Were the roots decayed? How do the roots look now? Was it planted at the correct depth?
  2. I have been asked if I can assess a tree. I am not entirely sure for what yet as it is a friend of a friend asking if I could do it. What I would like to know is, would PI be enough to cover me in this? I believe I need to confirm whether it is for: A: general insuring of a house with a tree within x amount of meters or B: a building suffering from cracks that could potentially be caused by subsidence caused by a nearby tree. In either case just PI of £1 mil should be enough no? Obviously credentials will also be a factor if a claim is made and the insurers for the house will want a suitably qualified person to assess the tree. I believe that I have the credentials and the knowledge, even if I will have to dig in the books for specifications, to carry this out. It just boils down to whether the insurance companies will agree with this. Any thoughts please?

  4. Right. I have spoken to my branch and I am waiting to get a call back from HQ. I would like to keep this simple. Let's see how this goes.
  5. I am thinking of organizing a VTA course in the North as I missed the one down South. I am trying to contact Jack Kenyon as he has just done the one in the South. If you have his details or can pass on mine, that would be great. 1: Do you know of anyone, including yourself, who would be ideal to present this workshop? 2: Would you come? Thanks, Island
  6. Please let me know if that works. I would be interested as I have only worked with QGIS so far. Cheers!
  7. Bit of a reverse method but hey, the power pole is probably more likely to fly off than the tree. For anyone interested, it is a Calophyllum inophyllum. P.S. Despite having only one arborist on the island and typhoons every other year, the trees there look much better than the topped tragedies afflicting the UK.

  9. I also think the rootballs look quite small. With regards to the foliage present, I would think it better at this time as the tree can just shed any leaves that may be stressing it too much with regards to water loss. When leaves are absent, all the tree has to rely on with regards to energy is what is in storage (much of which would be in the root system and some in the removed roots). I have, however seen many transplants being done of smaller stuff such as bushes and plants with their foliage being trimmed prior to transplant. I do not have any experience to say one way or the other which is right however. It may just be a case of; no leaves= lighter, less messy tree to deal with, hence why it is(or perhaps was) done mainly in winter in the temperate climes. Maybe someone will enlighten us or maybe I need to open some books...
  10. I wondered if there was any chance of the trees, once all the soil around was removed, toppling with a bit of wind? Also, how did you get under the tree to put in the ratchet straps? Were the trees anchored in at their new location?
  11. Cool. Were the pics with the foliage on from just last year?
  12. Very cool! Did you prune some roots a year or so prior to the move also? If so, how so? Where?
  13. Big tree transplants are starting to interest me so I was wondering if anyone on here does it or knows someone who does. I have just contacted Ruskins... Here is a vid of some very large transplant to give an idea: [ame] [/ame] I would love to be there when the pruning is done and/or the move. I am happy to help free of charge. Or, if an information day could be set up, I would be interested Cheers! Island
  14. Any confirmation of the identity of this fungus? I have come across it before...
  15. I attach my haas from lanyard attachment points when not in use. Clipped on one then around the back and clipped onto the other. If you put the crabs in the right way, they don't impinge on the lanyard attachment point space.
  16. Ipad with the case was my second choice when I decided to buy my tablet:-)
  17. Sorry for the confusion. I already have a tablet; waterproof xperia that I am happy with, though I need to get a proper surveying app at some point. I am using a free one at the moment which has been sufficient so far: Kobotoolbox. I was just wondering if the toughbook with a full edition of windows might be useful for someone as it is quite cheap.
