  1. Thanks for the replies and advice. It will be inspected every 6 months. It will be interesting to see how it develops. What studies are these BTGGAZ?
  2. Hi, yes it is in India. I know it was a bit of a long shot but I thought I would put it out anyway. I have done most of my tree work in this area but had not been back in 4 years. I think we might have even pruned this tree ages ago. Anyway, mango is a relatively strong tree in general, similar to ash but not as strong as oak. However, I wonder how fast the decay is occurring and if the tree can cope with the speed. Relatively fast growing. Not many experts around here with regards to pruning, risk assessments etc... Fruit production is a different story, lots of experts on that. Definitely more than one third sound wood when not accounting for the opening. Anyway, they don't want to do anything until after the mango season is over, they are just starting to flower...
  3. Mangifera indica, Mango tree with large open cavity. I have used Bartlett's formula and come up with two different results. Both not good: 40-47% strength loss. Tree is located within eating area busy with people on a daily basis. Outcomes: remove, short monolith, hard reduction, light reduction or nothing? Relatively heavy crown. The reason I am not outright condemning it is that it survived a cyclone 4 years ago. However, I don't know how much the decay has advanced since then. I am wondering if it is enough to just monitor the decay. If it is advancing rapidly, I am curious to see what fungus is doing the damage. Anyone have experience with this? Here is the formula (I could not find tables): strength loss= (d3+R(D3-d3))/D3*100 D>diameter of stem> 54cm d>decay diameter> 28cm R> ratio of open cavity to stem circumference> 188cm(circumference)/12cm(open cavity)> 15.66 Please correct me if I am wrong. Cheers
  4. Never thought of that one! Will have to try it. I use a smaller carabiner so the friction hitch doesn't get stuck in.
  5. Is the RR not meeting your expectations? I would really like a comparison of these two products. On the one hand the RR can be LOLER tested, whereas the Bone can not, as yet(as far as I've understood), yet the Bone seems smoother... Has anyone compared these products yet? Cheers!
  6. Similar to how I started(in India). No need to chip...
  7. Will we need to check the winning numbers or will we be contacted directly? Just asking because I wont be around the net when it ends, in case I actually win something... Cheers!
  8. I contacted Treestuff.com some time back. The RRs are coming out in Jan. Tried messaging Kevin about UK suppliers, to no avail.
  9. Cheers! I have contacted AEMG recently and I am going to do some inspections in Ecclesall woods tomorrow with the LA.
  10. Cheers for the advice Reuben! I am not sure what I want to do as yet. A bit of everything that I can do at this time really. I suppose it depends on what is available. Is there anything you would suggest to begin with? I definitely want to keep progressing into consultancy and see where that leads me. Cheers!
  11. Hi, I have just finished my level 4 at Treelife and would like to get into surveying. First steps: 1: Contact local surveyors/consultants to get some experience. 2: Figure out if I should stay as a sole trader or go ltd. I am currently employed 4 days a week as a climbing arborist and have self employed status. I would like to stay employed for now and do the occasional surveying until I get more of this. 3: Find what I need in terms of gadgets for gps and what sort of mapping software I need for now(keep it simple/never used Autocad). Phone or tablet or Juno style thing? 4: Office from home is fine, right? 5: Insurance wise, all I need is indemnity I believe. What if I sub-contract to another firm? Does their insurance cover me? Anything else? Website later. Any advice is appreciated. Cheers, Island PS I should mention that I have worked with trees for over 10 years, about 8 as a climbing arborist and done a few unofficial surveys. CV on Linkedin: Island Lescure | LinkedIn
  12. I will need a new rope soon and thinking to get something a bit thinner than 13mm. Mainly climb drt but a bit of srt. Liros Reef looks to be well priced, just wondering how people have gotten on with it. Is it visible when you are climbing? I am thinking mainly when climbing srt with a base anchor... Cheers
  13. Can't wait to get a battery saw just so that I don't have to pull-start every few minutes.
  14. smell is definitely pleasant or was anyway as the sample is now dry. So Lawson it is, for now...Cheers
  15. Thanks for all the replies! That Virginia tech website is great, used it when making a portfolio of trees for my level 4. With regards to what tree it is, I am leaning more towards sawara though not sure as the scales of the sawara look a bit sharp.
  16. Cheers! I can't believe I did not identify these! I will know for next time.
  17. Came across these the other day. I did not check if they were sticky or anything. Been looking around for ID but no luck. Probably getting descriptions wrong. Cheers
  18. cones are more like Lawson's. Smell is not typical Leylandii style.
  19. Trying to id my conifers... Bark looks similar to red cedar. Red/orange/brown bark. Branches droop. Relatively commonly planted around here, Derbyshire. Last pic is underside. Cones are more spherical than conical. Doesn't really smell like pineapple to me... Cheers!
  20. Conifer felling and last in the row a hydra conifer plus multiple wires, plus road. One wire went right through the middle of the meter plus wide, half meter long, conifer stem clump. Needless to say, it took longer than we thought.
  21. Will be there for over a month. If anybody there needs some work done nationally, I may be able to help. Will be in South East. Have a full crew with all climbing, rigging, and saws. No Van or chipper. CS30, 31, 38, 39, lapsed ISA Cert Arb, Level 4 Dip in Arboriculture, First Aid at Work, 7 years exp as climbing arborist Island Lescure | LinkedIn
