  1. 5.5mm OD 2.5mm ID and get some long handled pliers to pull it through - almost impossible without them as it is a tad oversize to standard!
  2. Been out collecting a bit of firewood, dead fallen Ash, Hawthorn and Elm, I had forgotten just how good my ported 357XP actually is, explosive power, no bogging - lots of fun. Been porting a 390XP Husky, the figures standard were Exhaust Duration - 172* Transfer Duration - 120* Intake Duration - 150* Blowdown - 26* I decided to widen the inlet an exhaust ports - the upper rear transfers were widened to help scavanging and raised a little to lower that blowdown figure and extend the time the transfers are open and flowing fuel/air vapour for more charge per pop. The muffler has had an extra outlet put in it:thumbup:
  3. Yup, thats the one, came in sounding a bit flat and when I fired it up for a few seconds in the workshop after porting - thought, My God, what the heck have I done - it jsut picked up like crazy:lol:
  4. Sounds a bit strange - I would pull the muffler off and inspect the exhaust side of the piston to make sure it hasn't nipped up - if the saw has an air leak or the carb is set too lean it may be over heating. Other than that - make sure there isn't excessive wood chip around the clutch or flywheel that may be binding. Lightly seized saws can nip up and then gain enough compression to run again as long as the ring is free but will ultimately fail if used again.
  5. 254XPs are great saws, they mad Husqvarna what it is and gave Stihl a bit of a kick up the arse a few years back. I have ported a couple and the first one was a shock when I started it up after porting....it was that good:thumbup: Before I ported it, the saw was a bit boggy amd slow, afterwards it picked up damn fast and wasn't a million miles off the 357XP:thumbup:
  6. Thats about right - some are potted in but most screw in - if the case has some sort of thread then fit a larger diameter HT lead otherwise use a little epoxy or glue like you have done!

Thanks Wes - I put the degree wheel on it and saw the exact same figures, I ended up squaring and widening the inlet, widening the exhaust port significantly, widening the rear uppers and raisig all the uppers to reduce blowdown. I found squish to be 0.25mm - too little IMO, especially on an older saw so made up a custom gasket and left it at 0.55mm....sorry metric here:blushing:
  8. It was really heavy with carbon, not just the normal black stuff but the light brown thicker crust as well. If you look at the pic of the side of the piston, you can see the build up on one edge, All I can say is that the small bits that fell off the plug got lodged in this area and that stopped the machine turning over. I didnt use a wrench on it - was guessing something had come out of the exhaust and had entered the port and as I was pulling the cylinder off anyway, decided to go easy and investigate the problem before going any further. All fine now and will fit a new plug after I have ported it:thumbup:
  9. Those clam engines need to be sealed from the cylinder base to the lower clam, high temp sealer is best. Gaskets can be made if necessary - done this many times! Glad the seal-all worked out:thumbup:

Weird one today, got a 390XP in for porting, took it out of the box, let it drop on the recoil - seemed OK, started stripping it down, removed the covers, plug etc. Tried turning the saw over by turning the flywheel and it wouldn'tgo over top dead centre....either way:confused1: Tried looking at the piston crown through the exhaust port, all looked OK:confused1: Gave the owner a bell and it seems it did a few tons of timber a week earlier so I decided to take the cylinder off - loads of carbon and the bit that had fallen off the plug on removal had given the piston extra height and bingo - it would lock onTDC:blushing: Never seen that before!

  12. Fins missing on flywheels can knock them out of balance and cause main bearing failure but saying that - they are opposite each other so it will be minimal. An old trick for a fin missing is to knock the one off the opposinng side.

Thanks Alasdair, all I aim for is a fixed saw and happy owner at the end of the day so always try to achieve this:thumbup: I am sure it should be OK now - thought the pics may be interesting and shows a fair bit goes in to this sort of repair:thumbup: Hope the wife has got over seeing a grease monkey in a suit:lol:

  16. If you do it use 3/8 low profile - Picco in Stihl terms - that is what the MS200T uses and should work OK. Full size 3/8 would be stupidly slow - thats if you could fit it!

  21. Some of this bio oil dries like syrup on to the saw and is nigh on impossible to clean off - have some thought for the saw techs - some take hours to clean:001_rolleyes:

  24. It is in a box of bits, options are local dealer or throwing it at me:001_rolleyes: I have agreed to get the crankcase apart, check the bearings out and to fit the new gasket and reseal. It is up to Matty to rebuild but reckon it may not be the last I see of it:001_rolleyes: A friend in need is a PITA:lol:
