  5. I've had an enquiry from someone in Hemel Hempstead with 2 Ash trees that have to come down because their neighbour went through the roots when installing a new fence. The enquiry started off with them not wanting the trees to go for firewood and would I like them for furniture and turned to, as I was having the trees would I be arranging the felling etc. Both trees are double house height, and are about 30" across, one is level with the corner of the house the other about 20' away and next to, if not touching a brand new fence! Although I don't like the idea of wasting such nice timber, the logistics of felling large trees next to property are something I try to steer clear of. If anyone is interested in taking on the job let me know and I'll pass your details on. Have attached pic sent with enquiry
  6. I'd use sweet chestnut instead of elm but then again if elm is all you've got!
  7. I used that bar for years before I saw the light and changed to a 46" suga hara, less wear on the saw now.
  8. New bar arrived today. Thanks to Rob & co at chainsaw bars great service as always.
  9. Looking at the ripples I'd say sycamore
  10. Same as when buying any other chain.
  11. Possibly, I milled 30 planks from the tree most 30" wide need to check how many have this figuring.
  12. Ok I succumbed, I bought a 30" mill from these guys and yes they look good but on closer inspection they're no where near as good as the Alaskan that Rob sells. The thickness of the aluminum is less then the original. The main adjustment nuts that you world alter regularly are not 1/2" so you have to carry another spanner where as on the original the chainsaw spanner fits, if that sounds petty try using it all day on site! It just doesn't have that solid feel of reliability. To be honest I wouldn't want to use it on a regular bases, don't think it could cope with the abuse, I certainly wouldn't feel safe using one of the bigger ones with an 880 & 48" bar. Like so many cheap chinese copies this is really for the hobbiest or for those who want to test the water before buying the real deal. I'll be using mine more as a static show piece at demonstration events.
  13. Copper Beech
  14. I don't need an ID for this I know what it is, I milled it last year. Just thought others might like to see it and wondered if any had seen this graining before.
  15. Thanks for that Alec. Yes I do use a winch and yes I do turn the bar. As I have a system that locks the throttle open I don't hold the power head and so as the unit is hanging down slightly this seems to be the likely cause of the damage. I'll look into making a harness that attaches to the mill and supports the powerhead that should help take off the strain.
  16. Yep, as close as possible. I'll be buying a new one next week
  17. Photos: I bolt the mil on as per Rob's instructions but mistakes happen, I'm expecting the damage to be down to driver era!
  18. As priviously stated, this isn't a complaint, if I had a complaint I would have gone direct to Rob not aired it in public. The bar is two years old and only used for milling, at the time I noticed the crack I was milling sycamore but the previous milling with the bar was a large wych elm. The chain was a new first time out granburg, normally use origon chains. Although I've been milling for the ten years plus I'm always willing to learn if I've made a mistake.
  19. I can't see how these guys are making any money, its not as if its a lose leader, you're not likely to buy a ramp as well. I wonder what their technical advice is on how to use the millor what spares the do. I'd rather buy from Rob, the back up service and advice I've had from him in the past is second to none and for me that's worth paying the extra.
  20. I'll sort some photos and put them up. You're right about it being at the powerhead end.
  21. It was more as a point of interest not a complaint. We mill therefore things break, it goes with the territory. I just wondered if anyone else had had bars crack on them.
  22. The publicity they got on this site intended or not has worked as they have sold out on ebay. I can't help thinking they most have broken the patent law in some way as from the photos people have posted there doesn't seem to be that much difference apart from the fixing of the tube handle and the Alaskan name missing from the castings.
