  1. Milled some dry Sycamore (felled last week but ring barked 5 yrs ago!) at the weekend during the woodland festival in Sherwood Forest, quick release system worked a dream thanks again Rob
  2. Could do with knowing where it is.
  3. Obviously this won't be possible if you're using a welded jig where the bars are fixed.
  4. The jig & saw tipping at the the end of a cut will be greatly reduced if you have the handle bracing bar in the centre of the plank.
  5. They've arrived, great service as ever, Thanks Rob
  6. Having been milling for over 10 years it's difficult to know where to start with the advice, so I'll stick to just these two bits. Keep the chain sharp and buy the winch kit
  7. Before you mill it talk to some local furniture makers and see what thickness they use the most. Milled timber is more saleable then a stem.
  8. Something similar in Nottinghamshire too, that was started 10 years ago.
  9. You'll get away with using the 36" bar on a 661 but don't use the 47" stihl bar on the 880 that bar doesn't have a nose sprocket and therefore puts an unnecessary strain on the engine, I use a sugi hara 46" on my 880
  10. Where's the postage reducer tool then?
  11. I use a stihl ms461 or a ms660 both well capable of doing a fine job
  12. If you're using a 48" (47") stihl bar then it won't be a sprocket nose. My advice is change it for one of RobD's sugi-hara bars asap, a bar without a nose sprocket puts a lot of strain on the engine when milling especially when milling wide boards. I'd also look at getting a 36" bar for narrower trunks, there's no point running a 48" bar down a 20" trunk!
  13. Thanks No Rush pm sent
  14. Sure am mate, things getting back to normal, the only exception is no signs on the vehicles, insurance seems to think we were targeted because they saw the signage.
  15. Thanks Rob, doing an art/craft festival this week, so hoping to shift some of it to the woodturners etc.
  16. I was in Notting Hill last week helping a Lime tree fall over completely and milling the last of 4 London Planes felled 3 years ago.
  17. About £15 cubic ft
  18. I've walked away from it now, let someone else have the head ache
  19. In addition it's gone very quite since I told them that although I would buy the trees once felled I would not be paying for them to be felled. And as it stands seeing as some thieving little gits liberated my gear last week I won't be milling for a while, if ever again!
  20. Yep, for some strange reason they got it into their heads that the trees were worth so much to me that I would pay to have them felled, then spend time milling and transporting the timber back to my place. It started off with they were having the trees felled but didn't want the wood burning and that I could HAVE the wood and then went to, as I was having the timber for FREE would I be arranging the felling of the trees! I get this so many times.

  22. Thanks for the thoughts guys. wpc plod phoned this morning, seems the operator who took the initial report failed to understand the size of the saws/bars and once mrs plod realised we weren't talking B&Q specials she took it more serious. Now, it all depends how serious but when I explained 54" bar on the 880 made up a unit touching 7' in length you could almost hear the cogs turning!
  23. Thanks guys. It got a bit worse there were some of my old hand tools passed down from my grandfather in the tool box, can't put a price on those. On the bright side neither myself, my wife or the dog were harmed.
