  1. I thought I was going to have to mill this section of Walnut trunk with the alaskan but somehow managed to get it onto the mill, broke the winch and bent the ramps slightly. Got about 25cu/ft of boards out of this section only another 4 sections to go!
  2. I've passed on the details to the client of those who contacted me so hopefully one of you will get the job.
  3. What's the current hoppus rate for roadside Larch & Ash, smallish diameters 12"-16"? If someone knows and would like to impart the information it would be most helpful.
  4. You've said there's no public right of way and that you've mowed a path to allow your boys to play. Not wanting to put a damper on this but you and your boys are trespassing on council land.
  5. As far as I can remember, the moment you touch/do any work on a fallen tree it becomes your responsibility. If you fell a tree and it hangs up, you're legally bound to get it on the ground before walking away. I get many windblown trees in the woodland and as long as they're not a danger I leave them but the ones close to the ride or visible to some knumpty wanting to climb it, it's taken down to ground level. If you think they're a danger, rope the path off until it's grown over and make a new one.
  6. I don't think it's fair to pass on a clients details for you to blind call them. If you want to PM me your details then I'll gladly pass them on to the client, who can then decide to call you and when.
  7. I've had an enquiry form someone near Basingstoke with a woodland of Ash trees they'd like felling in return for the wood, got a feeling they're talking 50+ trees. I've explained they will probably need a felling licence. Is anyone interested as it's a bit far for me to travel?
  8. The woodlands HM130 maybe a bit basic to what you're used to but it does the job and is easy to repair. If you read the comments on FB from customers across the pond there have been a few issues with the later models or that could just be operator error! Either way it's worth putting in the contenders list.
  9. Like most things you get what you pay for. I did a lot of research and ended up buying a Woodlands because it fitted my purpose. 18 months on I'm still happy with it, there where a few issues but it's not rocket science and nuts and bolts are easy to deal with. However, there have been a few issues with tracking on the later models of the HM130 and if you do buy one I suggest you check before starting the machine that everything is aligned as I know of a few people who have had blades pop off in use.
  10. The little darlings got stain on their hands from spilling a tin of van dyke crystals, then tried to break into my neighbours caravan and left a full hand print on the door, when my neighbour phoned the police they told her they didn't send the finger print guys out anymore! I've been told about reg alarm mines by an ex copper mate of mine although he says I've got to use blanks, can't see the deterrent in using blanks! Besides first time I was burgled plod asked if there was any blood, at least using live cartridges I'd be able to give them blood and limbs.
  11. Woke up Saturday morning to find the workshop door not just open but completely off its hinges and leaning into the doorway. Yep we'd had unwanted nocturnal visitors again!3rd time in less than 2 yrs. Fortunately they didn't get anything of huge value as we no longer keep tools in there, everything is stored off site in one of those 24hr store room places. However, in order to gain access to the door they had to move my truck and to do that they cut the handbrake cable and prised the vehicle back using a length of wood from my neighbours property, as it was in gear as well. Five days before, I'd undergone a procedure to get my back into rhythm but the shock of discovering the break in immediately knocked it back out which resulted with me being rushed to hospital and spending 5 hours in A&E. And what do you think the police response to all this was, they said it wasn't something they would be bothered with!
  12. Righto Carl I'll pass your details onto him.
  13. I've had an enquiry today about milling some tree in Manchester, a London Plane and a Lime. It's a bit of a long haul for me to do, so is there anyone with a mill closer to the location who's interested. Let me know and I'll pass on your details.
  14. That's shame but even with an alaskan on site the boards you'll get won't make it viable. Those trees are 10 years pass milling.
  15. I've used borax for a few years now, it protects against most insects but not against long horn, the only way I've found to stop that is to remove the bark. Bit of a pain if you've already stacked but it's that or potential risk of timber infection. They lay their eggs in the bark and when they hatch they'll eat anything in it's path. We've found the larva as far as 2" into Oak, they tend not to get much further then the bark of Beech.
  16. They didn't give you a boot because they knew you'd be out and about straight away, probably read this forum! Hope you mend soon.
  17. £8 per hoppus foot
  18. Deal struck this morning!
  19. The tree fell over in the high winds we had a few weeks ago and it's done that because of some fungus rot in the roots, so I can't see there being much value in the root ball. There's only the main stem left because some enterprising soul has liberated the bigger branches for firewood which is where the trunk will go if an agreement on price can't be reached, which would be a shame because to much of our hardwood trees end their lives by going up in smoke. As for sticking and drying in a ventilated barn, that's what I do with all my timber and as far as kiln drying goes I have one of those.
  20. The tree is 30" diameter and main trunk 16' long and straight, on the edge of a field with little or no easy access. Agent for the land owner was hoping for £2002 - £3000 for it as that's what he's worked out via google search what the timber will sell for. The look on his face was priceless when I told him what I'd offer and then pointed out most others will want to be paid to take it away. So much for google!
  21. Me? No Client has down google research and is convinced it is, well done google!
  22. I just know I'm going to regret this but what's the going hoppus rate these days for Walnut? And please, please no one post that bloody video!
  23. Thanks for the advice guys.
  24. I've got to send about 4 planks of timber to central London. Can anyone suggest a courier etc to use. Thanks,
  25. Have you checked out the website, failing that give Chris the UK rep a call, a lot easier then waiting for someone on here to answer.
