Not taken negatively at all: I thought it would probably be A.l due to host, location and its apearance in the photo. I've seen it plenty of times without the strip canker. Agreed it rarely spreads around the stem very far, however, I believe it can be saprobic on portions which have died through other means. Drought or waterlogged soil perhaps? Also I can't think of any other fungi which have a taste for yew and take this form on the stem. So it is entirely presumption, and with just one photo to go on that would be my best guess. If you think it's unlikely do you have any other suggestions, I'd be interested in your thoughts...

Or Laetiporous; frost damaged/parasitised/anamorphic/combination of. Probably not, just putting it out there for thoughts... Where's Gerritt when you need him!?

By all means defend your position. You have some valid points! And he does sometimes bring it upon himself. However, and I am by no means singling you out, since his recent 'I'm leaving' episode he has in my eyes been picked on unfairly and often unjustly. It would be a shame for many if he really did leave. For the record, I don't think he has ever asked a 'big brother' to defend him. People just do. Some see his posts and replies in different lights, which is fine. Some question them, even better. Some can't resist personal comments or petty insults, picking on grammar etc. That I feel is unnecessary and embarrassing, as a forum visited by members of the public looking for friendly advice. To add any credibility to what you have written he would have had to say, I suspect that P. schwenitzii has two stages of fruiting and this is the anamorph! True. I may be completely wrong having read between the lines of someone who struggles to get their point accross concisely using the written word. Imagine if someone else wrote that s***, he would have been down their throats like a fat old Matron, I have seen this so many times and it makes me want to vomit and it will not stop until the unnecessary pampering stops. I think it would depend who wrote it and in what context. From what I have seen of Tonys postings over the last few years he would be more likely to ask for further clarification of the intended meaning. Again, I may be wrong. I don't want to spark some sort of post war with you, you seem pretty knowledgeable and often make good points however it seems to me you have taken a personal and unnecessary issue with Tony. I don't want you to think I'm pampering him, he is big enough to look after himself. True, some people afford him a 'fungi demi god' like status. I dont believe he feels that is warranted and makes no bones about his lack of education or qualifications. Sometimes he can be a drama queen, and needs to step off his high horse; and sometimes he's right to be on it. As said before, nobody is perfect.
