  1. 25 years is a long time, but I'm still supprised that they got it fundermentally wrong as you say Timbercutterdartmoor... ...assuming they've got it right now of course!!
  2. some of the best info i think I have seen regarding details of firewood as a fuel - http://www.biomassenergycentre.org.uk/pls/portal/docs/PAGE/RESOURCES/REF_LIB_RES/PUBLICATIONS/FC-BEC-INFOSHEET-WOOD-AS-FUEL-TECHSUPP.PDF Any thoughts on the SBAS quality scheme?
  3. If you split your logs when they are green they will season much more effectively.
  4. enjoy the spooky men - [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqNAonCJEMM]YouTube - The Spooky Men's Chorale - Don't Stand Between a Man and his Tools[/ame] Seasons greetings to to you all from the land of song!
  5. ...here's how the telegraph see things: Green Property: How to keep a stove going - Telegraph cheers from snowy sunny mid wales....
  6. Warning! I have just been told that if you re-use (with lifting equipment) a builders (or any other bulk bag) you could be breaking health and safety laws. these bags are certified for one use only and if you get caught relifting them you could be fined up to £7k. Have I been told right?
  7. That is what was proposed in the original consultation document - althouhg log boilers were also included Goodness knows what the new version will exclude, what the tariff levels will be and how they will be determined. I hope there will be an announcement about a new consultation before christmas....
  8. ...but you would not want to burn 10" diameter logs ? RHI details have not been finalised...i think the original consultation document stipulated MCS or equivalent Cheers
  9. Hey Slack ma girdle! I'm REALLY sorry for not getting back to you earlier, I've only just noticed your message. Information on the QA scheme is indeed a little thin on the ground - there is a news item which says"The beginning of the month saw Consultant Andrew Morgan visit 3 Woodfuel Wales members, to introduce them to the new Draft Quality Manual. The manual will help them put in place the processes that will ensure that they can demonstrate that their wood fuel operations are controlled, managed responsibly and incorporate traceability, ensuring that the customer gets the product they deserve.

Quality wood fuel is the future. Woodfuel Wales members are leading the way forward."

Fact is the pilot scheme is still ongoing - one of the originals dropped out and another has been reqruited. Call the office for a chat if you fancy.

  10. What you have there is a "solar kiln" - very green, very eco, very efficient. yes promote it!!
  11. Is there an issue with importing pests and diseases along with the firewood?
  12. Make sure your installer is RHI savvy and MCS or equivalenet certified if you want to take advantage of the Renewable Heat Incentive payments - details due to be announced at the end of this year ...
  13. Bang 2 logs together - if they "thud" they are toooo wet, if they make a "ding" they are ready to burn!
  14. Hi Steve.

Just made a post on the HETAS thread - Hope it's ok

    Cheers

I work for Woodfuel Wales. we aim to support producers of firewood. This post is not intended to sell anything, just let you know what's occuring here in Wales!! Woodfuel Wales are currently piloting a quality scheme in conjunction with HETAS. Ultimately the scheme "guarantees" that the certified producer is capable of producing firewood at max 25% mc from a sustainable and verifiable source. the scheme aims to ensure "control , responsibility and traceability" within the business. The scheme does require some extra work, but this should be less than 10 mins a day when the system is running. Setting up the system has the benefit of reviewing current processes and it has been reported that this can lead to efficiencies. Cost for certification are still being finalised. I think the scheme will be popular with stove suppliers who regularly experience problems with their new customers burning too wet wood. In the future, if the RHI scheme ever gets off the ground, I can see payment being made in vouchers redeamable against certified quality firewood - but that's just my guess!! Check out the HETAS site to see a list of currently certifed producers, maybe give them a call to hear it from the horses mouth..... http://www.hetas.co.uk/pdfs//Part_2_Fuel_Manufacturers.pdf scroll down to end of page
  16. Nice trailer. How much does it weigh? what are you towing it with? do you need a tacho?
  17. "Its a big scare story by the fossil fuel industry from America that could have a devastating effect on the infant biomass industry but the research has fundamental flaws in its analysis. A good explanation can be found on the victory gasworks site which I use to keep abreast of gasification technology. I will try and find the youtube link. http:/victorygasworks,ning,com/" This really is good - Thanks RenwableJohn.
  18. Thanks Chaps. The point about the long short carbon cycle is a new consideration for me - I'l get googling! Yes CAT is a good source of info - I worked there for a while - they've also just completed an amazing new education center that is well worth a visit.... It's going to be interesting to see how this all pans out for the woodfuel industry. In the mean time Woodfuel Wales will keep promoting the burning of DRY wood and helping producers to improve their business by supplying a quality product.
  19. "no mention of clearview aye" That suprised me too - I've been told they are the dogs b's???
  20. Does anyone have any actual facts and figures for the carbon footprint of logs delivered in different ways?. I have been told that import restrictions require that wood is kiln dried in order to kill off the nasties.which makes it potentially very dry to burn, but as soon a s it reaches these humid shores it will start taking on a bit of moisture if it is not used quick. Can anyone verify this? I agree with the comment about using woodchip in powerstations. using a fuel and only realising 20% of it's potential is shocking.
  21. Thanks Firewood man, funnily it was as a result of feeling stupid after asking you questions about the weight of wood (you were the first in about 50 calls that put me striaght), that I was prompted to do some research regarding what merchants were actually selling and what they actually think they are selling. Ive been working hard over the past 7 mnoths to begin understanding this industry, and its refreshing each day to learn more and more from experienced people like yourself. I very much hope to keep up the good work done by Jos. Woodfuel Wales is interested in standards and we are currently working with HETAS to develop a standard for "ready to burn" logs. 3 producers are currently piloting the scheme. We will not be stipulating a requirement to supply any particular volume, but it will be necessary for the supplier to tell their customer just how much they are getting, hence my post, intended as a fact finding excercise. I do at least now know that builders dumpy bags are not all one size! Thanks once again for your interest and concern
  22. Thanks all. I'm going to swerve filling a bag with water for the time being!!
  23. I always thought that a bag was a cube, but then realised that it is (apparently) 90cmx90cmx90cm = .729 of a metre, but I've also seen this size bag described as .9 of a cube - most confusing. I guess the volume varies in volume if it bulging too! Anyway, I guess it's just a case of watch out for weights and measures i fyou are advertising volumes
