  1. I am in the market for a saw this size and use stihl for the most part as have found them to be very reliable. So when I learned of this issue i contacted stihl via their customer service link on their website, and had a prompt reply; We thank you for your email and your interest in our MS261 chainsaw. We have had an issue with the rim sprocket/needle bearing as fitted to this model. Whilst we are addressing this matter we cannot say, at this moment in time, that a new machine would not be affected. What we can offer is for the machine to be fitted with the spur sprocket which we know to be without problem. Should you wish to follow this route then please advise of your chosen vending approved STIHL dealer before making the purchase. We will then liaise with the dealer to have the modification made to the machine. It seems that there is a fix, but Im not sure how this will effect the saw? Any thoughts?
  2. I agree that the 260 is a great saw and will last you a good many years, but feel that a second saw is invaluable. Self employment is tuff at the best of times, and having a minor fault with a saw can set you back. If you ask too much of the 260 by running bigger bars and ringing up it will need more maintainance, whereby if you have a larger saw to deal with the big stuff its not working so hard- or you either. It also pays to have a back up. Things go wrong- not always your fault, but you will feel a little silly if you can't finish a job because your saw is misbehaving, and dont have a back up. A professional image will impress not only the guy you subby to, but in turn his customers. Repeat bussiness and recomendations for him- more work for you! Go for the 361, or a 441 if you want to be unstopable. You can run smaller bars on them if needed, and keep your 260 for what it was designed for 13 & 15" and good luck with your new bussiness:thumbup:
  3. Remeber that film in the 80's, Short circuit? It looks like the SAS trying to catch Jonny5 and do strange things to him!
  4. Tapped the model number into Youtube, there are a few videos on there. Australian guy on there recons its better than the 261.
  5. Im thinking about a stihl ms241 c-m and would like to hear about peoples experience with them. I see there is only one bar nut, instead of two.... does this make any difference? Also does it have a primer bulb like the newer 346xp? as i dont like this feature.
  6. This may stir up some trouble, but where do you buy your kit? England or France? I would like to buy locally, but find the price too high- with no negotiation, service poor and often lacking knowledge on the products. Also ppe is slim on the ground. Anyone know a store where none of this is true?
  7. Have been looking at new bars and come across Cannon bars, they seem very expensive compared to stihls offerings and wonder if anyone has experienced them and do they justify the extra cost? They look cool, and that always works for me!
  8. So, could a Laddomat be used on a traditional open vented system? It would perhaps make my existing system a lot more efficient and allow me time to save up and buy the accumulator and building for it to live in.
  9. I would love to see all the clever modifications made to vehicles and espesically plant to make forestry/arb use of them. For example, I have often thought that a dumper truck must be adaptable into a small skidder? I wish i was clever with engineering, or inventive, but lets see what can be done. Post your pics here!
  10. I used a mix of the two, our chimney is too narrow to line, so, the flue runs into the register plate of the chimney, breaks through the wall of the stack into my bedroom with flexi, and up into the loft, and trough the roof with sectional. Used a stainless flashing plate and topped with a cowl. All made by mid-therm and the quality is fantastic.
  11. Thanks, its a Supreme- reconed in Hereford- great service. I got an insulated flue from warrior in Cornwall, cost about a grand, but its great! I put an external rodding point to keep the soot out of the kitchen.
  12. :confused1:Can anyone advise me as to a low price chipper/ shredder for domestic use? I would be only chipping upto 3" max, and mostly hedge cuttings and leaves etc. for the compost bin. would like a large hopper so im not feeding individual twigs in. upto £1K Any ideas? I like the look of the titan pro.
  13. Can anyone tell me if i can plumb a heat accumulator tank to my old solid fuel rayburn? The reason i ask is i burn wood on it at the moment, but it wont stay in for the night. It leaves our house cold in the morning, and so we would like the abillity to set a timer/programer to warm the house in the morning. We have got arround this by using coal, but its 20 euros a bag and this lasts only a couple of days....... wood is free to me so the cost of the acumulator will be returned in no time. Also what size would be ideal for a 9 rad, large farm house. well insulated and double glazed, 170m2 floor space? Any help much appreciated.
  14. I use a thick plastic sack (25kg chicken feed) fill it with logs or kindling with no snags or fuss, and then sheath over the open end of it with the net sack. Flip it over so you see the bottom of the platic bag through the opening of the net, Pull out the plastic bag by its botty....... pull the cord, tie a knot! cheap, quick and tidy finish. Thank me by sending 1% of your bolstered profits to the arbtalk raffle (in my nam:001_tt2:e!)
  15. I think that there is an easy way to avoid the perils of the dreaded widow maker............ Don't get married and then you are invinceable! By odd coincedence, and im not making it up, I got wed on Saturday! I will start showing a little less contempt for nature now!!!! Be safe
  16. I use a stihl smart holder, fantastic bit of kit. Have cut 130m3 of billets and cord on it down to 1" diameter last year and never failed. its simple and robust. only problem is you cut so much you have to keep picking up all those logs so you dont trip over em!
  17. Perhaps if LR didn't waste millions? on concept cars that will never see the production line and concentrated on the core values of their brand, they could save a few pounds and build a range of real trucks geared at the millitary (doestic and foriegn) and utility companies. Say a 6x6, chassis cab with the tdv6 or tdv8 in a simplified form, around the 5t gvw mark. Big gap in the market there. and then look at light 4x4 usage in the same way. truck cab a disco 4 make it simple, shed the gadgets and use whats lying around and is known to work, the 6x6 could be used to move my soap box from rant to rant!!!!!!
  18. Not yet, but then ive never climbed a tree to date. once ive done my climbing tickets in uk, i will start to advertise tree surgery and amend insurance accordingly. I have found axa good to deal with for forest work, who do you use?
  19. Wishing all ye on 'ere a merry christmas and a safe and bountiful new year! I hope santa brings me a stihl ms660 and a Unimog with a crane on, oh and a nice wooly jumper with a picture of a stag......................................... have a good one chaps!
  20. fantastic! gets my vote for smartest truck in the woods.
  21. Registerd as Boucheron- Lumberjack and paysageist- Landscape gardener.
  22. Most ex-pats in my area look like they have done a stretch, or are avoiding one by hiding in manche! Did you have ant problems when you registered? I had to go to the department of work, and sit infront of a pannel of 6 officials and justify my wanting to be a forestry worker in france, my 15 years of experience, College certificates and ability to work sober didn't impress! this was after I had paid my cottistation, so when I was told 3 months later that I couldn't work in the industry, I asked for my dosh back. Later that week i had a phone call to say carry on working. c'est la vie. Not had any bother since.
  23. Second that! bilke is brill! jas p wilson had a couple a few months ago, s/h and a low price too, i think £2k ish. great conveyor on them really flicks the logs.
  24. Euc?, struth bruce! not very native, sell your dog and buy a Dingo! I thought farmers liked subsidies? go native- ish, well,at least Northern hemisphere:lol:
