  1. I think we all agree that the wild wood bbc4 program left us feeling a little cheated, as far as good tv is concerned I think that the members of Arbtalk could do a much better show. Here's by idea; It will be a cross between Axmen, harry hill, benny hill, x factor and gladiators! I will be the host, mendiplogs can do the script, wooded can be the sex appeal, spud can do the tech stuff, and mr bullman can edit! we will have a show down each week timbersport style with the looser being humiliated dragons den style, there would be a musical bit, which will be spontaneous and monty python themed. the finale will be an Ateam inspired build to rescue a woodland from neglect and the developers, oh and we will all travel in the Ateam van! (possibly a unimog?) I think you will all agree, its a winner.
  2. You misunderstand me, I am saying that waste wood should be chipped for biofuel, but not perfectly good trees.
  3. The first time I heard the term " whole tree chipper" I was angered. Not really changed my mind since then. Plenty of waste wood going to landfill for biomass, precious few trees in the UK, what a waste to chip them after the investment of growing and managing.
  4. Had to talk to the wife when I couldn't log in, I may be unfaithfull to her, but DON'T make me cheat on Arbtalk, Its what keeps me going! Good work, keep it up!
  5. Glad your not going down that path, would hate to think of you wasteing your money. what sort of money do they knock out for?
  6. Perhaps some kind of lubricant? Chain oil would be easily to hand! Welcome to the world of the cornishman!
  7. Miss read and licked your page, oopps!
  8. As everyone else has said a 346xp, these are probably the best saws ever made by husky and will cover everything a cs30 etc. will cover you for. it is also great for climbing with, and commercial felling. You will need a second saw at some point, its just common sense, get a bigger saw then and you will be able to cover everything. The old saying "don't run before you can walk" is one you should remember, as should we all!
  9. Green, bolts sticking out................ Its Frankenstein! run, save yourselves!!!! Can you not hire a chipper, I know not everyone likes to buy things on tick, myself included, and at least you would have something that is safe and reliable. I dread to think of some poor person getting hurt by this kind of thing, or stung in the wallet for a bargain!
  10. Fir coated razor blade! Nice!! Monkey with a gun, must be America!
  11. I cleared up a few years back by selling shorter lengths, as the local suppliers only cut to 50cm- standard size for a french woodburner, I was cutting 10" for my Rayburn anyway, and a friend wanted a cube to see how it went, his wife loved the fact that she could easily lift the logs into the fire, and I have never had to cut a 20" log since! They say size isn't everything, but "they" are wrong! It often pays to measure a ladies " fireplace" before trying to force anything too big in, trust me!
  12. those socks are rated at 20 m/s?
  13. Liked also, this could be a good way for us all to boost our profiles! Arbtalk could even get a page?
  14. Not impressed with episode 2 either. The beardy guy who lost his son, not got a problem with him, at least he isn't trying to make it profitable, and making habitat for wildlife, fair enough. If the hero of the tale can turn a profit in 12 months, and keep it in profit without income from other sources i would be amazed! Hugh fearnly woodsmanstall?
  15. We are getting lots of mice in the house with the weather on the turn, so the traps have been out for a few days. Mrs. Lumberjack don't like emptying the traps, so it's my job. Had 2 this morning, nice clean kills, and normally I take them down to the hedge at the bottom of our garden, 30 meters or so, and toss them in the field for mr. fox. Today though I had an idea! instead of walking across the soaking lawn in a strong drizzle, I decided to launch micky and miney to their final resting place.... Micky went fine, straight out the window, and just cleared the hedge by a foot or so. Figured on a bit more power for Miney as I didn't want her to fall short and get " Abused" by the dogs, so pulled back to full reach, and...... miss fire! She hit the window reveal at mach 3, leaving a bloody stain the size of a 50p. Wife regrets me getting Hyperdog despite me telling her its a tool for work! Women!
  16. I like douglas fir. My gran had a kitchen tool that made chips, you put a spud in a small tray, pulled down a lever, that pushed the spud through a grid and out came chips. Perhaps some kind of grid blade for a splitter?
  17. Looks just the job for putting stones on bits of cardboard! Not bad for the money, lack of rotator may prove limiting when stacking decks imo
  18. Just out of curiosity, and only roughly, what is the going rate for seasoned hardwood logs delivered within about 5 miles, cut and split. and what length do you cut at? Price per cube, not "load"!
  19. Here in France firewood is sold by the "stere", this is a unit that allows for some give or take as you will never stack the same logs to fill the same space twice. The amount per stere is dictated by how long the logs are cut from billets of 1m. If 1m long, you get 1m3. If 50cm you get 0.8m3, 33cm is 0.7m3 and 25cm 0.6m3. The cost per stere remains the same, only the volume changes. this is to allow for extra effort cutting and handling. These figures are set by the government, but very few people understand this, esp ex-pats! Here in Normandy you would get about 55 euros per stere, and hardwood only! here it is illegal to sell softwood or poplar as logs...... but people don't always know the difference.
  20. Ouch! Hope the throw bag is still in one piece, sounds like the ultimate game of "conkers"! I have to be honest that it's launch distance with tennis balls is a bit less that i thought, will try it proper soon.
  21. The scene is somewhat different here as most of my felling is hardwoods and plus size softwood, the forests are managed in a much different way, and have been since the year dot. Timber is allowed to achieve its maximum value, and continuous cover is not just a new buzz word here. The idea of a whole tree chipper would make many foresters have a fit, and the idea of pulp wood is a desperate one. When timber is valued for what it can mature to, instead of looking for the speediest turn around on profit, then it will be worth more, and so to will the men and women felling it.
  22. I get off cuts from a sawmill that makes pallets from pop and douglas fir, they pile up all the off cuts and waste. I buy it for 10 euros a cube, and try to pick the stuff allready cut to the correct length if possible. split with a billhook or hatchet. Check this way out too! Hope youtube works.....first time.....
  23. It finally arrived today, already in trouble with the wife for shooting apples against the wall, drive-by style from the ride on mower! not tried it for throw line lobbing yet, and tips?
