  1. Ah now if only all lights were like those nobody would mind. Sadly I have to report that the lights which prompted me to start this thread are back. Departed for the weekend and now back to protect the same empty stretch of road. I guess even traffic lights need a weekend off!
  2. Forestry commission publish prices but for softwoods only. Also bear in mind it will mainly be for large volume sales.
  3. Yes indeed, GPs are self employed businesses and have never been NHS employees. So they are all private already.
  4. That stinks, I would avoid at all costs.
  5. I personally don’t think the government should be trying to run health services, or education or indeed a host of other things they have taken over. Can anyone think of a service that is government run that is genuinely top class? I can name a few top class services (eg RNLI) but not government run. I have no wish to get into politics but really interested in others experience and views.
  6. You should publish a list of surgery options you offer with costs. I did hear years ago that the Welsh rugby legend JPR Williams sewed up his own lip on the pitch once! He was a surgeon mind.
  7. Update on the thread I got home 6:30 this morning and had a kip, then I went and gave my mum a lift home about 2pm today. Such a relief to be out, and they think she is fine. So in reality she prob could have stayed at home, but when your frail old Mum is in a lot of pain after a fall you have to do something. Such a shame it was Sat afternoon.
  8. You forget the NHS is not free! It costs an average of £167 per person per month. Anyway, surely by suggesting the NHS is imperfect is not the same as saying we should adopt USA style healthcare? I have several relatives in the US and they do get really good care.
  9. LOL I am not speaking from personal experience. Queen Victoria opened the Royal Gwent, and it was state of the art. Now it is just a state.
  10. Worth the journey! Seen a doc now and got to wait for scan. Thanks to British Red Cross we both had a cuppa and she had a sandwich. Maybe next time we could go to Bristol. Or would that not work I wonder? Must look into the reputation of the Bristol Royal infirmary. The Royal Gwent is awful. It was a lovely hospital until the NHS got hold of it.
  11. I think three hours would be considered really good in these parts.
  12. As I sit here in A and E with my 79 year old mother, I have plenty of time to ponder our national health service. We all know it has problems, especially here in Wales - only yesterday it was reported on the news that every A&E department in England has missed its targets for seeing people in a reasonable time. But why is it not possible to opt out? Surely I should be able to choose my own private hospital? I have private health insurance, but it doesn’t help with this sort of situation. We have been waiting about an hour so far and not even triaged. At this rate the drunks will start arriving. Last time my Mum was in A&E she was on her own and being sick, and had to wait until 5am having arrived 8pm the previous day. Other members of the public were looking after her thankfully.
  13. Update: I am delighted to confirm the lights were removed yesterday. As far as I can tell no work was done in the week that they were operational. Maybe it was just a training exercise?
  14. Ah yes you have spotted my muddled thinking. What a pillock.
  15. No arb exemption, but easier tests for people who are nice.
  16. Bring on driverless cars. And re-tests every 5 years for everyone. Might help reduce congestion as well.
  17. How about using leather or canvas glued to the timber?
  18. I also am pretty sure the flashing lights thing is an urban myth. I have seen loads of people do it but my experience is it does nowt. Now that would be a good thread - urban myths. Some of them are really worth whingeing about! And some are just hilarious.
  19. Just found it now - yes they are PLA lined which means (among other problems) that when people put them into recycling they will be outsorted and go into general waste. I'm afraid PLA is not the way forward, but I think it will take a few years for the world to realise that this is yet another blind alley.
  20. Their website doesn't say, but it looks as if they are lined with PLA, so not home compostable at all.
  21. I totally agree and indeed I have raised a few issues like this with the LA over the years. Last time I did this it was swiftly dealt with, but back in the summer I made a complaint about temp lights near where I live and I got a load of abuse from the company who installed them. So yes we should do something about it and not just whinge on social media, but sometimes you think "I just can't be bothered".
  22. Yes, though I think they are so often set up wrong that drivers lose respect for them.
  23. Strictly speaking emergency vehicles also cannot pass a red light. Every now and then there is a case where a driver of such a vehicle is prosecuted if it is felt the action is not justified by the emergency.
  24. I could be wrong but I am fairly certain the law does not distinguish between types of traffic light.
  25. Do temporary traffic lights wind you up when there is just no need? I saw my favourite of the year so far yesterday, and still there today. Have a look at the vid - there is just a bit of empty road with lights around it. Nothing just finished, no big tree on the verge being worked on. Maybe some work scheduled but no sign of it starting yet. And this is a very busy A road. If the motorway gets blocked (as the South Wales M4 often does) this road handles continuous traffic in both directions. Anyone better that? IMG_2270.MOV
