  1. That's barely run in matt. Changed my old 200tdi engine about a year back for a lower mileage engine I knew had been really looked after, but the old one had over 300k on it and still ran fine...
  2. Thanks guys, you've all been so helpful! I'm waiting to hear back from an artist friend of mine who's drawing up a few logo ideas, then I'll apply the chosen one to business cards as well as leaflets and hope some of it pays off... Got a few jobs lined up but I'm going to have to beg/borrow certain kit to get going...
  3. Got quite a few jobs recently without advertising, seems to be a random burnt of work lol! Been trying to think of a company name, what's the deal with this? I've got one in mind, googled it and there's a few companies with this name from what I've seen but not in my part of the country?
  4. Cheers for the advice guys! I did think about a tipper but as I won't be able to afford a chipper anytime soon I was planning on going old school and carting brash on a trailer... What are the laws regarding this?
  5. Thinking of 'starting up' my own small business. Not sure whether this is a good idea or not but it's something I'd love to do and I like the thought of being my own boss! Anyway, I've been in the industry about 2 years now, which I know isn't a mega amount! I have ran jobs, been team leader though so I've got a rough idea when it comes to that side of things. I've been self employed for over a year now, was sub contracting for a company up until a few months back though and since then I've done a few of my own small jobs and subbed for other people. I'd like to start doing/getting more of my own jobs and subby for others to fill in my gaps for now. Just trying to get a list sorted of what to sort out. I've got basic kit ie groundsaw, too handle, climbing kit etc. What about advertisement, obviously that's a big thing to bring work in... What ways have you found worked best? I've got a trailer and am thinking of buying a discovery to keep tools in/pull trailer. Just worried about taking the plunge I guess... Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
  6. Hey guys! Been sat on my arse for a couple of weeks now and bored out of my mind! I'm 22, hold a clean driving license (experience driving tippers with trailers), have CS30, 31, 38 & 39, been in the industry just under a couple of years now. I don't hold tickets but have driven telehandlers, dumpers, loading shovels etc so am used to machinery! But most importantly, I'm hard working and very keen! Got my own ppe, climbing saw, ground saw.. Willing to travel and am open to odd days, full time... Anything! Cheers, Leon.
  7. Will do mate! On a side note... Do you work Saturdays Matt? Got a mate who's starting the 10 weeker in September and is looking to get some experience working (for free) but can only do saturdays... Just thought it was worth an ask...
  8. Yeah, very true! I just emailed the quote of 250 a day all in, soon see what they say...
  9. Cheers guys! Maybe my price in my head was way to low?
  10. Thanks for the quick reply! Spoke to my mate, he said 60 a day which is fine... So if I say maybe 200 a day all in? Didn't want to make the mistake of going to low just to get the job then not making any decent money out of it hence asking for a bit of help.
  11. Just been to look at a clearance, tidy up job. It's somebody that my nan vaguely knows and it's the first biggish job I've quoted so am after a bit of help. It's just a load of strimming, hedge cutting stuff with about half a day of grass cutting. Am able to burn on site but will require a drag to the field next to the house. So hopefully nothing will come away from the site, meaning I can turn up in my car with minimal tools. I'm planning on getting a friend to work for me for the duration of the job and he'll basically just be there to drag/clear up so won't be on a massive wage. How much would you say is a reasonable price per day all in? Fuel etc... I'd say there's roughly a couple of weeks work but he was fairly vague in exactly what he wanted done so I think it'll be a case of just liaising as we go along. He said they'd had a quote already which was way too expensive. Any advice guys?
  12. I never knew that, learn something new everyday! Cheers though guys, It is nice to get some support Just picked up a 8ftx4ft trailer and I'm getting the landy on the road in the next couple of days, it's a start...
  13. Thanks guys, been a great help! Got my eye on a 8ftx4ft trailer and just looked at a small job (half dayish worth of work)... I plan to buy tools as I go along and need them. I'm relatively new to the industry and certainly know my limits and plan on sticking to them! As It'll just be the odd job at first, I've got a place I can burn brash so that's my plan at first... What about a waste license?
  14. This is what I'm thinking! I'm self employed for whoever asked. Thanks for the kind words and support guys! I think I'll just get a trailer and basic tools and see how it goes...
  15. I just want a slice of the pie I suppose! I still want to work part time where I am now because I'm learning a lot from it! But he hasn't offered me any specific days etc so at the moment I'm just doing what I do to get by...
  16. After doing a small hedge job at work today it got me wondering why I couldn't do jobs like this myself? I'm in quite a good position where I'm still living with parents and my boss asks what days I'm free to work and has plenty of work for me. Ideally I'd like to get to a stage where I'm doing 3 days with him doing proper arb work and then 3 days for myself doing my thing... I was thinking if I got a trailer, combi tool which allows me to strim/hedgecut, rakes, blower etc I could do light tree work/landscaping/hedging etc... I was thinking If I get the gear together then get a load of flyers printed off. What other gear would you suggest? Maybe a mower? If any lads have done the same I'd appreciate any advice you can give me
  17. I've decided against doing it now, haven't got the time as I work weekends as well now but those tyres look awesome... Need a couple of new ones so I'm tempted to get those
  18. So far I've found Worcester do the following courses: BSc Arboriculture BSc Animal Biology and Ecology BSc Conservation Ecology BSc Ecology and Environmental Management They all sound fairly interesting, I think I'll give them a call when I get a day off!
  19. Was having a ponder the other day about where I'd like to be in 10 years time... Basically I've only been in the trade for about 6 months and my plan is to get a good few years experience before I move on but I'm just curious as to what's out there! I've got a level 3 in Arb as well as CS30, 31, 38 & 39. Was thinking about courses that would allow me to travel, survey forests etc both here and abroad Has anybody done anything like this that could recommend courses? Cheers!
  20. Thanks guys! I'll have a word with him then...
  21. I've been working for a bloke since the end of last year and he's not interested in the splitting and delivering of our left over wood from jobs. He's looking for somebody to do that side of things and I'm half tempted to give it a go as a way of filling up my off days and making a bit of dollar... As I'm new to the trade I'm just looking for ideas and to try and figure out if it's worth it? Basically what I'd be doing is spending the odd day down the yard by myself, logging up, splitting and then delivering the firewood to contacts that he's given me, all he asks for is a tenner a load then I keep the profit... At the moment I've only got a 106 diesel, not quite sure if I could get away with putting the seats down, filling the back right up and then towing a small trailer? Or there's a possibility of using my dads 110 defender pickup. How much cubic metres does the back of a 110 hold?
  22. Just applied for this!
  23. Now that I LOVE! Keep the thread updated mate, I'll be keen to watch it come along...
  24. I saw that but had work sorted for today, was a shame otherwise I'd have been more than happy to work with you... I think it's always beneficial to meet new people, especially ones in the same game as you If you ever need somebody again though, I'll be there, I don't mind travelling a bit either... Yeah I think I was lucky to have got in with both of them. Both companies do a great job and I've learnt alot with them, even in the relatively small space of time...
