We have a large thinning job near Aviemore next month - 450 tonnes of predominantly birch.
  2. I did try a couple of landies a few weeks back - a 90 with the seat put further back and a standard 110. The 110 was impossible, the 90 was merely very uncomfortable. Problem is that I'm now accustomed to the comfort of the Navara - I'm not sure I could change to something as agricultural as a landrover!
  3. Yep, all trips to garage/breakdowns and faults are recorded. Anyone any recommendations for something to angle for as a replacement?
  4. Turned out that the engine malfunction light was a knackered glowplug relay, so it went in again this morning to have that changed (trip to garage number 6). Not three hours had gone by and the light was back on again so I just called the lease company. I want a different car. Not a Navara.
  5. Better milled than carved I would say. The repaired wound devalues it a bit, but it's otherwise a good stem by the sounds of it.
  6. Good news for you Landie fans who aren't so keen on it's replacement: Current Defender to live on to 2017 - Autocar.co.uk
  7. Speaking to my uncle last week, a few months back he was driving up a steep hill (21% gradient) in Luxembourg towing 3.5 tonnes (a mini digger) in the wet with a 90 on normal tyres. He had to stop momentarily for someone who helpfully didn't stop, at which point the trailer dragged him back down the hill. It was 50 metres before he came to a stop, thankfully having missed a whole line of new cars (the only type of cars in Luxembourg). Shortly thereafter, he sold the 3.5 tonne trailer and doesn't tow more than 2 now!
  8. A lot of money for beech is £60. I just don't do spalted beech (too much of a gamble and too much hassle) but if I had some really good stuff, I'd ask in the region of £30-35 a cube for it. Assuming a £2 a hoppus foot cost price, it would only be about £8 a cubic foot total cost once sawn, stacked and kilned, so £60 seems a bit high. Jonathan

13 inch. Bit of an animal on that though!
  10. Work back from what you think you can sell it for and work out your pricing from that. Cherry for instance, I'm happy to pay about £5 on the hoppus measure for. It costs a couple of quid to convert it, a couple of quid to stack it and spray it and a couple of quid to kiln it. Total cost £11, sale price about £28-£30, which still gives a 50% margin once allowing for drying related defects. Jonathan
  11. I don't have a forwarder, but I have quite an extensive policy with Lycetts and they are very good, as well as being the cheapest by far.
  12. I've been extensively using my 346XP in hardwood thinnings for the last couple of months and it has been excellent all round. I run a 15 inch bar on it, and it will quickly munch through anything that I throw at it. It sneds very quickly, is light as a feather and it's a saw that I would very strongly recommend. Jonathan
  13. Just found out that my uncle chips TD5s as a hobby - has done about 50-60 with no issues. Not so local though as he's in Germany. Usually gets 180-190bhp from them. Jonathan
  14. I am actually weeping from laughing. I would too like to nominate this for best thread title of the year!
  15. I've not laughed so hard in months - thankyou!!
  16. I am sure that popular consensus would support the implementation of Sharia law for such offenders. One hand for the first offence, second hand for the second offence...... Genuinely - what the hell do you/can you do with people that have no reservations in destroying someone else's livelihoods, and in many cases their lives?
  17. Airbag light has been blinking for about a week until today.....at which point it was joined by the engine malfunction light So, going back to the garage on Friday (I believe the 5th time now, not including the 2 RAC recoveries). I have about 7k miles to go until the first service, which I am going to be insisting is done for free on the basis that I've lost really quite a lot of time to a brand new vehicle. Jonathan
  18. Very good Matt! Some really attractive boards there. Couple of (hopefully!) constructive observations - you might want bigger fans as I've found the desk fans to be a little underpowered. Additionally, with the Wykabor, you need not remove the bar. I just leave it on and use it as epic kindling when it comes out! Nice to see some pics of the setup! Jonathan
  19. Tuesday covered. As it turns out, work now needed for tomorrow. Any last minute work would be considered.
  20. Just wondering if anyone needs a cutter/groundie next Tuesday and Wednesday in the general Edinburgh/central Scotland area? I'm away and one of the chaps I work with needs some work. He's 25 years experienced in Sitka spruce, cuts like a machine. Anything that isn't Sitka is regarded as an absolute holiday! Drop me a quick message if you can help - I'm just trying to keep him busy whilst I'm away. Jonathan

    Jokes???

So what if I can't spell armageddon - it's not the end of the world!
  22. As a slight derail, what percentage would you go with for hardwood thinnings? Some slightly bendier stuff in there, 3-14 inches.
  23. This is true. You aren't the first, nor will you be the last that wouldn't believe how much I ate until you saw the medium sized cool bag stuffed with food I bring to work each day. Thank God for my wife, who seems to have a part time job in just feeding me. You'll be pleased to know that Tesco are now doing home deliveries for fuel for the heavy petrol user, so you needed worry about worrying out of 2 stroke at lunch with that guzzler!
  24. Spend long enough in the woods and you know to pick your stands! 12 tonnes is damned solid given the trees and relative greenness to production thinning. I fear that once you get a smaller saw and learn to eat I may be chasing you!
  25. Had my first day today in normal 50-60ft 40year old hardwood where I've cut 20 tonne. Nearly bloody killed me, but excellent fun. Nothing really hanging and quite substantially stacked too. Call me the sawminator!
