  1. No it is not. Its all about working attitude and being a team Member. My climbing rate is 150.00 a day but on some easy jobs folk dont get me in and i dont blame them. They get a 120.00 a day climber and save 30.00 a day which is 150 a week Labour is one of the most expensive parts of the industry. I dont sub very often anymore as i'm to busy doing my own stuff If i was to say 150 a day grounding you'd be laughed off the face of the planet
  2. I see what you are saying but there's no chance it would work with 90% of the companies up here
  3. You must get very good day rates up there, team of 3 must be on 700 quidish
  4. You must be short of a few brain cells to not charge more or physical labour of being deep down in a hole as you say. Or you must just get away with charging a good whack whilst out with your clipboard. Tomato tomato mate
  5. Is that the way you've gone Simon as i know you where one of the guys after a lad not so long ago. Its like pullin teeth isnt it
  6. Thank god for some sence here. Glad theres some sane people about!
  7. Depends on climbing or grounding. What do you not get? Its very simple. If you ground then you dont climb as there will be a climber there, these thigs are sorted out beforehand, called organisation. If grounding you work with the climber and feed the chipper and run the ropes and clear up. If climbing you go up the tree and climb... With me so far? Bring your own climbing gear, saw and fuel, then once dissmantled you put your kit away and help the lads on the ground.
  8. No the way ive ever had it. Always a clear divide between climbing and grounding wages. And just to add i am and always have been a climber that comes down and drags brash and shifts the logs and clears up well. Treating gear with respect as i would if it was my own
  9. Is that for specifically just a groundy? As you say a spot on reduction, is this just eyes from the floor or climbing?
  10. On the contraire, ive recently asked the lads who have worked for me what they think of the situation. It would be regarded that the pay is good for what is required from them within the days work, they have a good time and know i always pay. If we work later i give them more, if its a technical job i pay more. Some times we finish early. Doesnt seem like im getting anywhere with you pal so lets leave it as that
  11. Everyone has got bills to pay, and I can't see how £70/day pays all the bills, can you? I was talking to my brother last week who employs hundreds of lads many of them in the lower wage bracket £8-10/hour, he was telling me that lots of them are scratching out the last few quid at the end of each month... Not the way I would want to live, would you? So for a young lad in college that does a days work who gets 70.00 a day who lives at home, no board and doesnt have to pay tax as ia a student.... (Even if tey had to pay tax ) 70.00 a day isnt feasible? Come on Obvioursly more experianced guys on 90-100 a day called in to do more technical jobs. Where they juat hae to turn up and worry about nothing and work. Also would you pay a brain surgeon to put some stitches into someones arm who has cut it when a normal a&e nurse can do it? Horses for courses
  12. Think you need to wake up and read more on here. There is loads of difference regional for prices of everything. Day rates of crews with differet men is vastly different throughout the country. Yes a subbie does set his rates but he sets them according to the market in the area... Price yourself out of work you wont get work. Yes a subbie has to suffer wet days and no pay as does a contractor. Ive worked from the bottom up, been a subbie, worked all over, worked more hours when needed, worked in the pouring rain. Atarted my own company and done all necessary things there. Regional difference matters and a whole other variables. Im probabilly starting to come over in thw wrong light now but its comments like these that really get on my nerves. Are prices different from here and london... Yes Do we need to pay a london wage up here where living is cheaper ... No (Because london rates dont exist up here ) Do the maths
  13. Not everone wants to be a delivery driver. Why is everything a comparison. We are talking about this industry nothing else. Why settle for doing something you dont want to do because its easier money when you desired to do something else. Bit of a crappy attitude and outlook is say
  14. Im sorry Eggs but your miles out buddie... This is for someone just to turn up and work just themselves and provide nothing. Must be your area that ok for that money but the prices i gave are the prices for this area.
  15. Thats awful news! Does it have a tracker? How is it suspected to have been nicked? Driven or low loader? What company owned the valtra? Shits! Theiving scum
  16. Of course this is all true. On the other hand you can pay some people more money and they will never be any better. The couple of good groundies I use get more then just someone brought in to drag brash. We have a laugh, work and maybe go to the pub after. I've had lads in their 30's and younger college lads so tried a variety of age groups. Theres give and take on both sides of employer and employee. And both need respect for each other whilst having a good time and enjoying work. Obvioursly area dependant on wages etc but on domestic arb around here 120-130 a day is too much for a groundie who just turns up with nothing. Climbers are 120-150 groundies are 70-100/110 max experiance and attitude dictate where on the scale people are
  17. Based in lancashire. Not many lads about at all, most have set up on own and need lads themselves. Only lads left avaliable to work are lads that want 120-130 a day to ground. Over the top for just brash dragging and chipping etc which is all most folk need, no need to bring any gear just ppe and water proofs
  18. This is very true
  19. Most parts will be same as tw125 and any obscure bits i bet you could still get sorted.
  20. Yup, a new tracked chipper for me is 26k plus vat. I know of better things i'd prefer to spend money on lol
  21. They were and are a good chipper. I ran a diesel version for a front line chipper for a good 3.5-4 years never gave greif at all. The problem is some folk are under the impression that new chippers are better and dont break and leas downtime. This isnt always the case. If your handy with the spanner and you find a good honest chipper, older gear can work well!
  22. Im curious to know what others think and especially from round the country. Is there a lack of workers? I know of a few lads that have been looking for groundies to no avail. Is this other peoples experiance?
  23. Still in need of someone, my current groundy is going to be off for a while and need a replacement for a while. Anyone in need of work or to top their week up? Ideally i just want one person I can keep using rather than using different subbies to tide me over. Anyone interested just get in touch
  24. Take some pictures and make sure customer is of the same opinion also then take the bugger out. Sounds like your dealing with plonkers at the council Comprimised stem / union. Its used to having the mechanical stress and form of theee stems. Next bad wind it could just peel it like a bananna. Not good inna frequently used and sensitive area. The damage could cost thousands. Head stones are expensive and knowing it poses a risk and council not leting you sort it straight away is disrespecrful
