  1. I'm making a very simple pine door for my shed at the moment and just wandered if you guys could recommend a decent oil/stain to finish it off? Ideally I would like the wood to be finished so it looks a bit more like a weathered Oak look to match in with the Oak posts making up the shed. Any recommendations would be most appreciated!
  2. Also been trawling ebay looking for second hand chisels and have not had any luck yet...
  3. Cheers i've been looking over this set for a while now: Tataki Nomi Chisels, Woodworking, Hand Tools, Chisels, Japanese Chisels I believe they are heavier than the orie nomi chisels so i think they would suit me for larger sort of work in oak, ash etc?
  4. Thanks again for the help, i'll be using them for similar work. so the oire-nomi chisels may not be suitable for me then. I think the tataki nomi ones may suit me better as they are described as "striking chisels"
  5. Are most of the ones you have brought hand made then? what sort of work do you use them for fine furniture making or heavier work?
  6. Cheers for the help again guys! I have found this set of chisels which look reasonable what do you think? Tataki Nomi Chisels, Woodworking, Hand Tools, Chisels, Japanese Chisels They are a bit dearer than the irwin marples but i like the wooden handles and have seen some good reviews on the Japanese chisels as well. I won't be doing any fine chisel work at the moment just making benches, garden furniture etc for myself atm
  7. Cheers for all the information guys, I've been looking into the Japanese chisels and really like the look of them. But what is the difference between the names of them? I've been looking at "Oire Nomi" and "Tataki Nomi" and just wandered what the difference between the two is?
  8. Cheers for the advice guys. would you just get a standard set of bevel edge chisels to start with? Do any of you have the special mortice chisels or don't you bother?
  9. I'm after a set of carpenters chisels and just wandered what is a decent set/make to buy? I want them to last as i intend to use them for making furniture workbenches etc so I'm after a decent set so what would you guys recommend?
  10. Cheers for the video, very informative and has given me a few tips! Will have a look into that book as well!
  11. Does it cover fruit tree pruning well? especially managing overgrown examples?
  12. I'm getting a lot of fruit tree pruning work at the moment and just wandered if there is a decent book i could buy to read/give me a bit more information about it. I've do a fair bit of regular pruning for customers but now seem to get more and more where the trees been left for a long period of time.. So if anyone could let me know of any decent books that would be great!
  13. What models are you using? have they now upgraded the hs81?
  14. Ok many thanks, so the battens would run in the same direction as my trusses then?
  15. Thanks for that, i intend to felt the roof would i still need to use a membrane underneath the felt or would you just tack the felt straight onto the plywood?
  16. Unfortunately most of the frame work is up so putting an air gap between the feather edge and membrane might be difficult, the only way to do this would be to set the membrane back an inch between the studwork. This would take more time, but i presume would do the same job? If i were to put the membrane straight onto the studwork then put a batten on to create the airgap (which is obviously the easiest way) my feather board would be too far away from my dwarf brick wall.
  17. Ok many thanks for taking the time to reply so would you use marine plywood over sterling board for the roof then? the board i was thinking of using was this: Norbord Sterling OSB3 Board 18 x 1200 x 2440mm - OSB3 | Jewson I agree with how you do the side walls as well although i won't have a sheet of ply before the cladding my intention was to have (working outside to inside) feather board, breathable membrane, 25mm air gap, 50mm insulation, thin ply to cover up on the inside. How does this sound to you?
  18. Cheers where did you get your pressure washer from? Just doing a bit of shopping around before i buy!
  19. On a side note what sort of boarding would you use for the roof? its just going to be felted I was thinking sterling board or plywood which would be best suited?
  20. After reading through the above posts, (thank you all for your advice! it has been VERY helpful!) and thinking it through for a while would it be easier to simply put a membrane on the stud work followed by the feather board and not insulate the inside? and maybe just put a radiator or something inside? That ,ight stop the condensation problem i was worried about? As i said before i am a complete novice to any sort of building and am just looking for any advice before i go any further with my build!
  21. Ok thanks that great, so by using some batten that will create a small air gap? its a new build and i'm using 3" x 2" for the stud work (its not a big shed say 12foot by 7foot) so what do you think to 2" of insulation and a 1" piece of batten to create the air gap between the membrane/featherboard and insulation. Also not sure i understand this bit: "Remembering to leave the bottom tilt fillet with an air gap between each upright." I apologise for all the question, i don't want to have to rip the shed apart and do it all again!
  22. Ok thanks i think i get the idea of how to insulate the roof but how about the walls? I was thinking of just filling the spaces between the 4 x 2 studwork with insulation. So it would go feather board, membrane, insulation, thin ply to cover the insulation. would this be ok or would i get a lot of condensation. I was intending on not having an air gap just to make things less complicated.
  23. Ok thanks for that i've had a look at that website as well and they seem to be selling them cheapest that i have seen.
  24. Which model did you get in the end?
  25. If you could see what model number it is that would be helpful! There are so many different ones...
