  1. Ideal! Cheers for that. Didn't think of searching for it, will do next time
  2. I've got an annoying problem with my 346. If leave it on its side or sat upright for any length of time the chain oil starts to leak out from under the clutch cover. Any ideas??
  3. I got fed up of searching for a decent used winch and ordered a Uniforest 85, convinced myself I needed to order it for christmas before they put the prices up in January:biggrin:
  4. Total rain so far today 132mm/5.2 Inches....it's just relentless! Won't be surprised if it's over 6 inches by the end of the day.And the wind is still gusting 60mph+, Hope you chaps haven't put all your gear away for Christmas!
  5. Over an inch of rain already today and gusts of 65mph...going to get worse around lunch time too! At least it's not snow though
  6. As Matt said that was meant as a question I'm just a bit confused, why can I take my tractor and trailer many miles to collect straw/feed or what ever when it's an agricultural vehicle but then you're saying if I had a Mog I could only do 1.5km:confused1: I think that might be the case for light goods vehicles registered as Ag? I think the case for red diesel usage on the road for farmers is something like what Traditional Loggers said. I think I'm fine to travel on the road using red to collect feeds etc...for use on the farm but if I was collecting them to deliver to a neighbour then I should in theory be using derv...I think. I'm not sure about situations such as, say I was collecting some timber to be used on the farm, I presume that'd be fine? But then If i was collecting timber to split into logs and sell....?? Gets confusing!
  7. Well being a farmer it is just agriculture for me. I don't understand how say a daf 4x4 that's agriculturally registered would be limited on mileage when an ag registered unimog isn't limited so much?
  8. More just curiosity. I've seen a few trucks around and they look pretty useful. A cheaper alternative to a mog I guess?
  9. Anyone know anything about registering something like a Daf 4x4 or similar sized goods vehicle as an agriculture vehicle? Seems a bit of a grey area as far as I can see so far...
  10. I'm not a climber or anything but I had a thought the other day! I occasionally do a little spear fishing and thought that a slightly modified spear gun would be ideal for getting a throw line up? You can pick up a cheapy spear gun for less than £50. Bearing in mind I'm a farmer and don't have a great deal of knowledge when it comes to health and safety....
  11. Meal with the other half & family tonight:thumbdown: if i don't got I won't hear the end of it until next Christmas! Cheers for the offer though Winds picking up here again. I always look on here to get an idea of what's happening on the Moor weather wise Weather station - Dartcom , I think it must a bit sheltered from the wind though, always seems stronger than it says.
  12. I didn't see the tavy yesterday but I've pinched a friends photo of the weir in Tavistock from last night.
  13. Winds calmed down here on dartmoor now but we've had 3.6 inches of rain today, don't think I've ever seen it this wet.
  14. I would guess that part of the reason tractors are exempt from MOTs etc. is because statistically there isn't enough accidents relating to poor vehicle condition to warrant it. I would say that there just ins't enough accidents involving tractors the bother with any additional legislation, hence why nothings been done so far... But then there's lies, damn lies and then there's statistics
  15. Are you saying that you drive a tractor with a load the same way you'd drive in your car? I shouldn't have said make people get out of the way, more make my presence well known. All I'm saying is that cars should make way for any big machinery on the road, because it makes life easier and safer for everyone. The amount of cars I meet on the road who decide to make me squeeze past rather than them reversing 50yards is a joke
  16. To be honest I do take the attitude that I'm driving a big machine people will move, I make people get out of the way because 99% of the time people just don't understand how difficult it can be to drive a big load on the road so you have to make yourself noticed, I could fit 50 beacons and people still wouldn't look. People don't understand and they don't care what we do, a tractor on the road is nothing but an inconvenience. A few days with an empty belly would soon change that attitude
  17. These "low value goods" can make or break people. If it's a crap summer and you've only got a small weather window to get your harvest in ,which you've worked all year to achieve, you need to get it done as fast as possible. And when I say fast, I'm talking 50k tractors which is all of 31mph! Then a car comes flying round the corner doing 50mph and you get the blame for driving irresponsibly...?? I would bet every person who posted on here has done much faster that 31mph on back lanes, and I doubt many tractor drivers actually go flat out on back lanes, big machines just look faster because they're big. Undoubtedly there is some idiots let loose in heavy machinery, but you get that everywhere. But no one has actually mentioned any accidents? I can't think of any in my area, there's the occasional bale that slips of the load or blow out on the trailer but that's it. Accidents in the field or in the yards is a different story! I could list them off all day
  18. Time for a farmer grumble! More to the point, if you CAN drive a car what's to say you can drive heavy machinery?? How many people who have a driving licence can actually drive a car safely? Just because someone has some chainsaw tickets doesn't mean they can use a saw...it's just a piece of paper at the end of the day. Even if they did change the law, all of the older generation would most likely be unaffected. And it's the older generation who more than often the dangerous ones in my experience, probably because they grew up driving tractors when you could pretty much get away with anything. Very often I get a phone call because I've got a delivery on a 7.5 ton lorry waiting at the end of my track because in their opinion "theres no way i'm going to fit down there!" normally they're the older generation. yet I had an artic lorry come with a delivery a few months ago, it was pitch black and he had no idea where he was going. He drove the lorry through the gateway at the end of the drive inch perfect, dropped the load off then span the lorry round in the yard (again the 7.5 ton drivers somehow can't manage it). The lad driving was 18, his dad was farmer and he started driving the lorries and tractors around the farm when he was just a young lad. It's the experience that counts, not the qualifications. And yes the farm machinery has gotten a lot larger over the years and yes there's lots of young lads driving the kit. Lets say average 200hp tractor and trailers worth £100k+, if it was you machine, would you let a young lad drive it if he wasn't competent? Rant Over

    Dartmoor.

Hey Matt, We are one of the highest on the moor, ranges from 1000ft to just over 1600ft. There is another farm up near Okehampton firing range called East Okement (I think) and that place is a bit higher up and it's really out there! I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure that some of the farm houses/yards on Dartmoor are some of the highest in the country. Places like the lake district run livestock at much higher altitudes but the farm houses are right down in the valleys.
  20. Not sure if I'm posting in the right place but I'm after a tractor mounted winch. Anything over 5ton pull would be considered. I'm in the South west. Drop me a PM if you've got something that I might be interested in. Thanks

    Dartmoor.

I farm very close to Matthew in Princetown, the farm is other side of the valley opposite Wistmans woods. I love living and farming up here but it's not without it's challenges! After weeks of solid rain I do get a bit envious of the folk off the moors who are normally basking in sunshine, but it's worth it for the good days! A friend of mines Grandfather got stuck in the Warren inn in the snow storm in 1963, apparently had a great time! Booze on tap and free food for 3 days! Pretty sure theres harvesting going on in Soussons at the moment:confused1: Weirdly a friend of mine used to live there. They only lasted about a year until they couldn't hack it any more, having come from a town house then having to live with no mains power in a pretty strange house in the middle of nowhere was a bit too much!
  22. I bought one of these as few months ago Milwaukee 18v Combi Drill Li-Ion Dual Pack Kit (1x 2.0ah & 1x 4.0a.. so far really good! It's taken a fair amount of abuse so far and stood up very well. The brushless motor seems good too. As others have said Dewalt & Makita are very good, they're expensive, but it's not worth thinking about getting a cheap one because you'll just have to replace it because they just don't last.
  23. Yea just had a dusting of snow up here on Dartmoor. The photo was near the Warren house inn near Postbridge, always gets the worst of it there.
  24. Got a bit of snow here this morning but turning out to be a cracking day!
  25. I'm not sure but I think this is bacterial canker in this cherry tree, wanted to get some expert opinions on whether I could be right and what the best plan of action would be? The tree is in my partners parents garden and it's taken a bit of beating in it's lifetime:thumbdown: Not a great photo, my phone ran out of batter after the first photo
