  1. This would be the first studying I've done since my A levels which was a fair few years ago now, what kind of level is the RFS course at?? Say in comparison with A levels? Is it a gentle easing into the study of arboriculture? I don't have a great deal of practical experience in the field but I have some and I try and read as much as possible, I'm currently working my way through Modern Arboriculture by Alex Shigo which I'm not struggling with too much although it is written in a fairly strange way, although I'm slowly getting my head around it.
  2. Thanks for the replies. Ok if anyone has anything could you send me a PM with what you've got and that'd be great
  3. I was wondering if anyone on here has taken the RFS certificate in arboriculture home study course and how they got on with it? How much study time did you put in? How did you rate the course? How did it compare to any other training/study that you've done? And any more detail as to what's covered in the course? + any other useful information about it would be great Thanks
  4. Has anyone got any size 12 chainsaw boots that they might want to get rid of? I put a post in the classified section but had no joy, thought I'd see if I get more luck here Thanks
  5. Thanks for all the replies, interesting to hear everyone's opinions. Does this mean that the certificates aren't actually a legal requirement? They are there just to comply with regulations and to allow you to get insurance:confused1:?
  6. Hello, A curiosity question. I was just wondering what it allows you to do once you have NPTC qualifications (or LANTRA), I.e. If you've just passed Cs 38/39 does that mean you can then call yourself a tree surgeon and go out climbing self employed? Even if you don't have any experience in the field? Not that it's what I intend to do, More just curious about the technicalities of the qualifications and also it sometimes seems that "tree surgeon" can be a loosely used term, I know of a couple local gardener/landscaper type guys who also offer tree services even though I know they don't really have a great deal of knowledge on the subject, yet they have certain NPTC qualifications....I hope Thanks
  7. Hello, I've got a MS310 stihl and was wondering what the max bar length I can get away with is? And if I put a larger bar on is there and mods to help with the extra bar length? Or is it a case of getting a larger powered saw
  8. That looks awsome! That's the kind of thing I'm aiming to do except it will be with some ash, beech and maybe sycamore if I can find the right piece. So what's the deal with sand blasting? Do you have your own kit? Is it expensive etc?? Thanks
  9. I've got some nice weird shaped bits of timber that are all gnarled and twisted which I'd quite like to get all cleaned back for sort of decorative pieces in the garden etc.. How can I do this? I was wondering about maybe a sand blaster but I know nothing about them?? Any help is appreciated
  10. I contacted my landlords (HRH) local land steward about this tree because I'm a bit worried about it as a big limb has already come down and the rest doesn't look great but they have assured me that it's safe and isn't likely to come down any time soon, but I'm not sure they have any idea what they're talking about so I thought I'd ask on here. It wouldn't worry me so much if it wasn't for the fact I took all these photos from a public footpath that is well used during the summer months. What do you think?
  11. Im in Devon if area affects the price. Thanks
  12. Sorry you probably get this all the time. I've got someone who wants to buy some firewood from me and as I don't normally sell it I was hoping someone could give me a rough idea of how much to charge. It's all split and dried beech and ash, I guess the amount they would want is about a builders dumpy bag full, which I presume is around about 1m3? Any help is really appreciated.

    sharpening

Unfortunately not, I watched him do it. Did it in 1/4 of the time it takes me and didn't use a guide, said you can get it sharper without one File was straight out of the box. I'm using a Stihl file holder. It's funny, when I did my cs30 it was like "now you can sharpen a saw". I suppose it's like when you pass your driving test but you can't really drive properly . Thanks for the replies. I will just keep practicing, a sharp saw seems to take less effort and less time to use and I'm sure it's probably safer, so it's irritating when you can't get it right.

    sharpening

I had a professional sharpen my saw a while ago and it ripped and stayed sharp for a lot longer than it does when I sharpen it. I've done my cs30, I've tried using sharpening guide and tried without and I've got the right file. Even in my workshop with the saw in a vice and if I take my time I still can't get it as sharp as he did:blushing:. Does it take a lot of practice to get it properly sharp or am I probably doing something wrong???
  15. I Used to love watching Heli-loggers then it disappeared from TV:confused1: Axe-men seems like a typical over the top American tv program but it's worth watching for the "swamp man" Shelby
  16. Should point out that I never said the firewood I have is free, I have approx 20acres of woodland on the farm and have the means of getting it, cutting, splitting and storage. All of which I would hope costs less than heating oil. Any Idea on how much wood would be used annually? Also, how often you need to load it up with logs? Budget would depend on wether any funding is available and if I choose to just do my part of the house or all 3 dwellings. And it's a domestic property. Thanks for the replies so far. Is that a stove or a range? Not that it's that important but can you cook on the top of it of the stove?
  17. I think I'm in a non smokeless zone:confused1:, likely if I don't know about it. The house is a large old granite farm house which has 3 separate dwellings, each of which has a Rayburn(2 oil and 1 Solid fuel) so I was wondering about something like a large wood boiler that could heat all 3, if such a thing exists?? I guess it would cost lots of £££'s though.
  18. I have an oil Rayburn No.1 and I think it's about time it was replaced with something more efficient. Just wondering what you all use for heating & hot water and how you rate it? I have plenty of firewood available so I'd like to make better use of that resource but I'm open to any ideas. Thanks
  19. I think thats Saltram House in Plympton, had a mate do his cs30 there recently.

Thanks for the replies. Haven't looked at Mikita, any models that you would recommend? I've also found an '06 Husky 350, are these ok?? Thanks

    Farm saw

Found a 346xp locally but it won't idle, other than that it's fine. Anyone had this problem and is it a simple fix??

    Farm saw

What would you recommend if I was to look at older model pro saws?? Thanks

    Farm saw

I should point out that I'm not looking to spend more than £200 if possible. Could someone explain what the difference is between a standard saw and a pro saw??

    Farm saw

just googled the 028av and discovered it's heavier than my current saw so perhaps not the right one!
