  1. Cheers for all the advice/comments . My price is at the lower end of what's been suggested but there's a few reasons .The experience I'll gain from completing the job, in any way, is worth a lot to me & It's about 3 miles away from me. And as said, prices in this area are pretty low and not massive amounts of work around. Thanks for the offer of taking the timber but it would come back to the farm for firewood. There's some huge price differences going on? Some are near twice what Others suggest! Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  2. Cheers for the comments. I think like was said I need to just man up and go for it! Momentary lapse in confidence : ). And thanks for the offers of help, will get in touch if needed. No not yet, hard to quote without a plan of attack Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  3. Wow well spotted! Dieback looks fairly light. Has honey fungus. Based on dartmoor. Thanks for replies Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  4. I've been asked to quote for dismantling this beech tree and if I'm honest it's a bit trickier than anything I've taken on before. The right hand half is over a river just out of shot on the left is a building. Has good access for mewp. I'm thinking either get a contract climber in, hire a mewp or pass the job on to one of the larger local firms. Any thoughts? Thanks Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  5. I got showed a good way to make a sliding double fishermans by laying the cord into 3 and tie a fishermans around with the loose ends. Will tighten down so no need for a larks foot. Not sure if that makes any sense??? Sent from my iPhone using Arbtalk
  6. That's funny, I look outside on days like this one an think "I'm gonna get wet today..." the joys of farming livestock! still enjoy it though! even when it's Pi**ing down:thumbup:
  7. Great, I will check those books out and I've now got the app, which looks really useful. Thanks again
  8. Hopefully they will help with the id. Is there any books you would recommend to help with fungi Id & diseases etc? Thanks again
  9. Thanks for the replies. I'll get a better photo of the first one and see if that helps
  10. I spotted these fungi on some beech that came down in the recent strong winds and I'm curious what they are and what it means for affected trees? Can a tree survive the infection? Very new to fungi so any info is helpful. I think one of these is honey fungus but not sure about the other? Looked it up and it looks like Bulgaria inquinans but I'm not sure.
  11. Thanks for all the help. Just ordered the meteor piston £29 inc postage from Europe, local dealer quoted £104 and I'd have to wait a week... Hopefully once the new piston is in it will give the saw some much needed power! Thanks again
  12. Taken the exhaust off and there's some vertical score lines on the piston which I presume is bad news...?
  13. I recently purchased an 066 and its not quite the beast I was hoping it to be at the moment. It just doesn't seem to rev very high and as soon it's put under any strain it just stops pulling, its only running a 24" bar. I've changed the filter and fuel line as the old line was split, spark seems good and air filter is good. It doesn't seem to have a huge amount of compression, very easy to pull over so I'm wondering whether a new piston & rings might be the way to go but wanted to get some advice before I spend any cash. I was also wondering whether its worth getting it ported whilst I'm getting work done to it? Any help appreciated!
  14. Finally got some better photos taken.
  15. Sorry only just seen this. Yea the winch is working spot on now, cheers for getting it sorted so quickly. Only thing that needs to get sorted now is the weather! It's been so wet we can't take any machinery out without making a massive mess.
  16. Im not great with tree id so This might be something really easy but I've never seen one of these. The form of the tree was similar-ish to a cedar type and approx 40-50ft
  17. I've posted this on the end of an old thread in the large machinery section but it was suggested I start a new one on here to get some more advice. I'm having a total nightmare with the company I bought a digger grapple from! I bought the grapple back in November and after fitting it had some trouble with the arm on the grapple hitting the end of the dipper, probably due to my quick hitch. Then somehow ended up bending the one of the tines on the grapple so I contacted the company I got it from and they said to send it back and they would repair it and make a new curved arm that wouldn't catch the end of the dipper. After waiting 2 months it finally came back and they haven't repaired the grapple and all they've done is weld a longer piece of straight tube steel as the arm (the didn't even paint it!) they also didn't send the pins back out! So I rang them up again, after being accused of not sending the pins back I was told I would get the pins and a new extended pad to stop the arm hitting the dipper arm. 2 weeks have gone by and not heard anything, I've tried ringing every day for a week and the guy won't answer his phone I've also sent numerous txt messages and had no response, I wasn't even rude, just polite reminders but my patience has worn very thin now. When I did speak to the guy a few weeks ago he was also telling me that I was probably loosing up to 30% of the power due to the large offset caused by the quick hitch. But he also said they didn't fix the grapple because it was my fault for picking up something that he claimed only put pressure on 1 tine of the grapple.....which to me makes it even worse that I managed to bend it. What can I do in a situation like this?? very very frustrating as I haven't been able to use the grapple for nearly 3 months. I've not been in a situation like this before so I'm a bit stuck:thumbdown:
  18. Think you might be right there Matt. I'll put a thread in the general chat section and see what I get from that.
  19. I'm having a total nightmare with the company I bought the grapple from! Didn't want to start a new thread so thought I'd add it on the end of this one. 20. I'm sure this has probably been said at some point already but thought I'd chip in anyway I've got a quarter mile track up to the farm and I've been battling potholes for many years....and pretty much always fail. I had all the potholes ripped up, filled and rolled with a big vibrating roller about 10 months ago, potholes started appearing about 3 months after. As far as I can tell, if you have standing water anywhere and cars/trucks driving over at any speed over 0.5mph you're gonna get potholes, the cars just fling out the water with a little track every time you drive over it. I think you either make sure it's graded spot on with drainage where it's needed or pay out and get some tarmac, if my track wasn't a quarter mile long I would have had it done years ago.
  21. Yea I think what Jon says could be part of the problem, I'll try pulling out some more cable and see if that helps, cpuld maybe put a snatch block on which might help. I'm running it on a 125hp machine so should be enough I hope. What speed do you run the PTO at? Just tick over or up to 540?
  22. Thanks for the replies & the message Jon:thumbup:. It's a new machine and it's an 85M, not hydraulic but after yanking on the cables for a while I'm thinking hydraulic might have been the way to go! I did wonder whether I could pipe up a small ram to control the clutch engagement but not sure that would be a good idea:confused1: The first thing I did was lay the cable, which was a bit of a nightmare as the bolt holding the cable to the drum was barely finger tight so when I got the end of the cable it just disconnected and I had to cut the cable a re-attach it....not a good start! I had a quick look at the clutch adjustment and it appears to be adjusted correctly according to the manual. I've rung the dealer and they're calling me tomorrow morning with some answers I hope. I'm going to try it on some smaller stuff tomorrow and see how it copes, might be being a little too ambitious but I thought an 8.5ton should be pretty unstoppable??
  23. I've just got a uniforest 85 winch and I'm having a few teething problems. First time I've used a winch like it, I'm used to a very old pto winch so I could just be doing something wrong with this new one. So basically I got the winch hooked up to the tractor and thought I'd test it out on a nice big lump of beech I've been wanting to get for ages, I'd guess it weighs the best part of 3 tons. I attached the cable at about 20m from the machine and started to pull it which at first it did fine but when it got to the point of needing to pull a bit harder the clutch starts to screech, the anchor on the winch hadn't really even dug in. I gave another go and then it really starts to pull and digs right in, I then stopped winching just to check everything was ok, started again and the clutch screams again...?? The rope to engage the clutch is also pretty hard work to pull, not sure if that's normal or not?
  24. After a quick google it turns out you're right! I would put an xr as half enduro half trail, it's doesn't quite fit in but it works. I keep looking at Husqvarna Te's, I've been very tempted by a few TE310 bikes I've seen about. Anybody got one on here??
  25. Not that I'm pedantic or anything but the XR is closer to a trail bike, the four stroke CR's are just CRF's and the Enduro is a CRF-X. Which is what mine is. I do love an XR though, bulletproof Honda unlike some of the more modern Honda stuff....
