  1. One of the best climbers I have ever worked for was 52 and could put us young students to shame. He was previously a photographer then decided to go to tech and start a business and has never looked back. His only weakness was a lack of circulation to his fingers so if we were on a cold site he would have to keep swapping gloves over from the engine bay.
  2. Every opportunity is best to apply sunscreen. Having lived in NZ which is where the sun bites its best due to the lack of protection from the ozone layer I would suggest a spf of at least 30+. any less is for office workers going for a lunchtime stroll! I sat and read a book on sunday enjoying the sunshine on Blackford hill in Edinburgh and now I have the great stinging feeling of burning skin. Does not help when the next day you are dragging brash and scratching scolding arms Mind you I go brown in the sun, must be some good french blood! Just remember to apply it frequently and dont forget the top of the head.
  3. My name is David Harlan, I am a qualified climber from NZ seeking employment. I am living in Edinburgh, I have my own ppe and climbing kit. Any work considered so please make contact with me either by private message or on 07858 342 900. Regards, David.
  4. Been climbing on this since 2007, V.T with fishermans terminations and doubled bowline, works for me. The line on the left is my strop with vt prussic.
  5. Cool pics mate, so gutted I never got around to climbing up one of these when I was in NZ. Such magnificent trees and they support such a wide array of flora and fauna. If you get an opportunity check out the Bluff Stream Kauri's in the Waitawheta Valley just south of Waihi. Check this vid out on youtube: Bluff stream Kauri -Impressive Sorry I dont know how to embed it. Walking around in this valley you see all the stumps from the logging that went on and think about the way the loggers managed to move these big lumps of timber to the mill.
  6. Neem oil is a great natural alternative that I have used to control infestations of scale insects. Where possible soak the root ball with the neem oil mix aswell as foliar spray. Repeat doses will bring the infestation under control, you will still need to physically remove the insects as they will still attach themselves even when dead. I usually just run my finger along the stems and brush them off. Good garden centres should stock Neem Tree Oil.
  7. Great news on the little one, look forward to your call.

  8. Great pics Hamadryad!! NZ has a few native frogs but they mostly go unseen. Some of the populations are down to a mere 300 or so although DOC is trying to bring the numbers up with breeding programs in place. Was great watching the frogs making their way across the paddock to the pond some hopping and crawling.
  9. Hey Tom, wondering how your new born is coming along or not?

Any work on -need a spare pair of hands?

  10. Being a Kiwi, I haven't come across this before so really enjoyed seeing the little chaps going for it out in the open, made me laugh no end!! Takes a new meaning to "The Hills Have Eyes"!!!
  11. sorry random shot of some tree swallowing action too!
  12. Out for a wander and came across these folk going about there business!
  13. Use your saw properly and with a correctly sharpened chain how are you going to get kick-back? Supplying saws to joe public are they going to be expected to have passed a cert in use of a chainsaw and correct sharpening techniques? Slightly ticked off!!!
  14. Currently using Dynaglide works well in my opinion. Zing-it has incredible strength and it's flat profile works very well. Flingline, Getquick.....
  15. say the same to you fulla!

    Headache..

A pinch of salt in your water bottle helps keep cramp away and helps the body absorb the water you put back in. If you can get powdered electrolyte drinks and mix them up I found them to be great in NZ with 32 degree days. Summer weight chainsaw trousers and a singlet is the uniform for working in summer.
  17. Bump!!
  18. just made my way through all the posts in this thread and have been enjoying the discussions and squabbles. Great looking reductions -I like the way the overall shape is maintained.
  19. 20mins to work then about 50mins home when I was working in NZ. hate work traffic! If the jobs a good one go for it! gives you time to rewind on the way home from the day.
  20. Treeson;263300]spiders, weta's (NZ), birds, golf balls, always plastic bags! I used to just use loppers and keep my collar zipped up! I hate things falling down my neck. Think the worst things to climb and fell are the black Mamaku (Ponga/ Tree fern) Cyathea medullaris as they have very fine black itchy powder that makes it's way everywhere and does not taste too good either! they are also a pain as they are acidic, so you have to give all metal surfaces a petrol bath afterwards grr! Haha just had to edit plant name -must have been half asleep last night

  22. Hate climbing palms! Can understand starting at the top. The fumes build up under the skirt of fronds just like they do if you have used a saw in the chipbox. A lot of guys will just use loppers to avoid getting gassed out. As palms grow using straws as building cells, the use of spikes in my opinion is fine especially on Coco's palms.
  23. Whens Petzl gonna come out with a top-gun visor?
  24. Search through the yellow pages -plenty of options! Persistence will pay off.
  25. Climbed one of these too, terrible things. Every time you go to put your hand around a branch you get another spike in. I had to climb up and reduce about 5 stems back off fence line and throw all said wood about 5metres over a swimming pool and pool fence. Really soft timber 3 swipes with the Silky and you were through a 5inch piece! Was glad to see the back of that job.
