  1. Large logs tend to be for large open fires. It is more of a problem getting logs small enough to fit the 4kw yuppie stoves.
  2. It was not me. Mine are bone dry
  3. I had a fourtrack independant years ago good little truck fights well above its weight.
  4. Of course not all Range Rovers were fat oxs and not all drivers were old farts and the price of Amazon parts is horredous £1000 for genuine exhaust £800 for pattern £400 for set of discs and pads. What ever you buy its the luck of the gods.
  5. So would I Freelander ok to drive. Disco 3 and 4 very nice. Range Rover dreadful a right fat old ox that wanders all over the road and still has no boot space. I would struggle to pick between a disco 4 and amazon if was not for the reliability problems. Range Rover = cigar smoking old farts car.
  6. Cannot comment from experience but I would say disco 4 better than lc upto 56 plate. I would have a new shape Amazon rather than a disco 4 because the reliability on disco 3 was absolutely dreadful x10 and the disco 4 is shaping up to be the same. I would drive both before making the decision. But being a tight ass 10k is too much for a car so wont be buying either any time soon.
  7. You have made me laugh tonight the thought that a discovery is even on the same planet comfort wise to an Amazon. And I should know I run both.
  8. Going from a Hilux to a Landrover will be a culture shock. Not so much if ever more a case of when and how often will it breakdown. Not trying to start any fights love my landrover and had many over 20 years just the way it is especially early td5 discos go for post 52 plate with plastic lights.
  9. My point with the asda thing is a skilled man ( even with limited experience ) should be able to command a living wage especially working in all weathers and the job is not without risk and its hard work.
  10. I am always looking for offcuts 1-3ft long to process into kindling. 11" is a waste of time but over that upto 20ft is ideal. Bigger the better.
  11. You would get more catching the bus to Asda and stacking shelves in the warm and dry. You could work your way up to manager on 50-100k. While people are prepared to work hard risking their necks and wearing out their own kit others will be prepared to let them. I know I am in a different trade but I charge more than that to travel 50 miles ea way.
  12. Going fast but still some in stock. PM sent
  13. I process into big 1.5 cu metre vent bags, logs that are ideal for nets. Round timber up to 5 " split once so no sharp edges. Most of my 3" thinnings just cross cut at 8". I then make the nets as required otherwise even kept out of sun light they fall to bits after a few months. I avoid big wedges of splintery stuff as it snags the nets and people who buy bags tend to have small fires.
  14. I should point out over the years I have worked with a lot of good people and only had a couple of bad apples. As you say cuts both ways
  15. They did not have a lot of choice they were on the cards. If they were moonlighting especially with my vehicles ( and we had sightings 250 miles away ) they were positively encouraged to leave
  16. Is it me or is that alot of overhang for a body ?
  17. It was a no brainer for me £20 in overtime or £300 for a whole lost day. Stuck in my throat sometimes when you new the engineer left late and took 1.5 hrs for lunch. But then trust works both ways
  18. Do they need gardeners to clear pavements of snow and to assist if the place freezes up. Do certain members of the gardening team get 4x4's so they can pick others up. Not much point opening the cafe if your snowed in.
  19. Take some indoors for a few days and retest sounds like it may be wet from rain. Rain comes out of the wood in a few days. Sap will take weeks if not months. Large butts cut into 12" rings seasons quickly. cord wood left in metre lengths very slow especially oak and ash. Beech if it is scored down the side by the harvester seasons reasonably well over 2 years but still needs breaking down to logs in the summer imo.
  20. 1.5 times normal hourly rate over time was always paid. As someone has said if it becomes a tit for tat fight between staff and boss You need to put your cards on the table and the whole company needs to talk it through. In this economic climate I see plenty of bosses kicking the door shut I dont see so many employees being head hunted. With all the legislation it has become very difficult to employ people in this country. Its alright for the government to make the rules they are not paying for them. Some small firms have to struggle on while their male staff are on maternity leave, then on the sick, then on holiday, then on a training course.
  21. I have had this so many times I have lost count with new employees. I left at 3pm to beat the traffic and get home by five. Means the 1 hr of work left behind means 4 hrs of travelling 240 miles of diesel. After alot of vocal discussion no one is in any doubt as to what is expected on site.
  22. Is that the ex Andover trailer. If it sits idle for a few days robins nest in the crane mast.
  23. Just renewed my subscription again and must thank steve for all his help with problems created my end with my dodgy AOL email accts. Any problems and he is on it and its sorted. When steve started the directory it was a no brainer for me as even if it produced nothing it was my way of contributing to a forum I use alot. But for the third year running the directory has produced good results. The showcase option is excellent for me as I am too lazy to produce my own website and customers can see our products in the gallery. Running a web site like this with hundreds of visitors is expensive and we dont see what is going on behind the scenes. If anyone is sitting on the fence Get it done and help grow the directory
  24. I had a hakki pilki 2x its a good machine if you have alot of straight 8" stuff. Over 9" it struggles. If I was carrying on with logs I would be looking at a machine that can deal with 40cm timber because cords not getting any smaller.
  25. meter the logs and make sure they are around 20% in the middle otherwise you need the stove flat out to burn them otherwise it goes out. With proper dry logs you can shut the stove down but not slumber the heat should pour out into the room. Any gaps around the liner will empty the room of any heat you create. If you get the chance to look down your chimney when its out but the central heating is on it will shock you how much heat is drawn up the chimney its like a hair drier.
