  2. Yeah its a touch to far... Im getting married in 2 weeks time so when im back off the honey moon il get an alaskan bought and get milling! Keep in touch though... We'll compare notes!
  3. Just been looking at Roberts s's milling pics and was wondering if there was anyone near Dumfries, Scotland to show me how its done when i get round to buying an Alaskan? Im competent with a saw but never done any milling before, so all the little hints/tips would be handy to know. There'd be a bottle in it for somebodys time. Cheers lads
  4. Looking good Robert. Ive got to buy an alaskan for my 88, never get round to doing it!
  5. By the way, when the asparagus is ready give me shout! Il swap you a days tree shearing and xmas tree science for a box of fresh asparagus!

  6. HA each to there own Frank, me and the family love getting a big 10ft Nord in the house at xmas. Its just not xmas without a real tree and they smell great. Anyway, Enough about Xmas tree's, i seemed to have hijacked this thread slightly... If anyone wants to chat about this im all ears.
  7. How come no tree mate?!? This xmas let me know if you want one and i will sort one out for you. Try and get you back into the christmas spirit... Humbug!
  8. Hi Dave, nice to talk to you. Yes we shear our tree's every year except for the year that they are sold as it can leave scaring that dosnt look good. We dont shear anything from April til july as this is the time when the trees are at there most active and are developing new buds. Scots pines are not something we grow here but i have had a lot of exp with them in the past, we only grow Nordman, Fraser and Norway spruce. You are looking for a 60 degree taper from the leader to get a nice shape on the tree. Hope this helps. If you have anymore questions fire away!

    Regards. Rik

  9. Its more like 14-16 pound per tree for a 175-200cm first grade Nordman. That is a wholesale price to a garden center or similar, if you can establish your own sales outlet for your tree's then your talking proper money. Anywhere from £25-£50 per tree to joe public.
  10. Depending on species its more like 8 years Sam. If its done responsibly christmas tree production can be beneficial for wildlife.
  11. Without discussing our figures and finances on an open forum id like to say we do very well out of it. I am not suggesting that you or whoever it may be just plants xmas trees but it is definately another option/ income source to consider. It is a guarunteed source of income after the first crop is mature, providing you rotate your fields. Plus its safe... Christmas is not going to go out of fashion.
  12. Good idea. Get some xmas tree's planted along side your woodlands for a regular source of income. We started off with 70 acres and now we are upto 250 acres @ 2000 trees per acre. We did this after foot and mouth wiped out all our sheep and cattle.
  13. Good thread this one...
  14. Haha i thought you'd had enough and shut it down Steve...
  15. I knew you'd see sense fella...
  16. When your spruce get bigger and you put em out somewhere else try and avoid exposed spots for the first year or two. They get wind burnt and go down hill fairly quickly after that. Lesson learned the hard way there...
  17. Good, well thats a start. That'll tell you all about safe working distances to different voltages, prox zones, and all the terminology. Yawn! Taking me back to my Ua tickets now...
  18. I dont like working with em but i love looking at big, old, twisted, gnarly hawthorns... Loads of character and brilliant for making bird tables out of.
  19. Haha GET YOUR UA1!
  20. Buy trees, fruit trees, shrubs and gifts from Mail Order Trees online. 200cm-240cm Rowans £29.99 each BARGAIN!
  21. Dude... All live powerlines HV/LV add more danger to tree work. ... Ive seen people fell tree's through LIVE 33kv lines and ive seen a linesman after he has been fried on a LV feed... If your unsure just leave it alone
  22. You can probably buy some decent sized rowans to so the customer wont be waiting forever for a screen... Maybe pricey though for bigger tree's
  23. How are you finding the spruce? We plant and transplant to bigger mother pots around 15-17,000 spruce a year for x mas tree's. Also how are you finding the apples something i have never grown.
  24. Rowans are nice tree's upto that height and waxwings love em, plus they are quick growing with decent canopy/density on a mature tree. Failing that just throw some dog wood in!
  25. Hi Matt, ive sent you a private message. Cheers
