  1. I'd go for a membrane like 'Terram' or similar, laid right over the lot. Then planings if you can get them or a sub-base like '803'. You'll then have a slightly raised road that will keep you clear of all the shite, I've no experience of using crushed brick, but the membrane is essential IMO - otherwise you can spend a huge amount of time and money watching stone disappear into the chocolate swamp.
  2. Passed one today while delivering logs. Minor road, blocked by what I took to be a Philipino groundie, waved us through past a bloke up a ladder with a little Makita, no PPE, and another Asian bod stopping traffic in the other direction. I'd put my mortgage on the fact that they had no permission to block the road, no training and almost certainly no insurance!
  3. Still got a few nice, seasoned, dry hardwood logs. Ideal for nets - if only I could get hold of some...
  4. Don't forget that since the industrial revolution Britain has been a mainly urban, oil powered, coal burning society. We have broken the connection with wood burning for a couple of hundred years, so its only natural that a cord will be as alien a measurement to most people as a Peck or Bushel. Most of Europe kept a wood fueled, agrarian system in place so the link is still intact. Almost run out of hardwood here, still got bags of softwood but its gotten really busy again in the run up to Xmas. No sign of the public falling out of love with there woodburners just yet!
  5. 150 quid here too, < 10 miles delivery. You might get more if it was split...
  6. Sorry, that was for Alex M.
  7. (200quid @ Richer)
  8. Blame Queen Victoria. Well, Albert really. Being German, he brought the tradition of bringing an evergreen tree indoors at Xmas. The good Queen of England, being half German and then marrying a German, was only too happy to adopt it. And the great British public, being only too eager to slavishly follow their perceived betters, adopted the custom wholesale. Any good?
  9. I remember going to Waitomo,(I think it was), but thats south of Auckland AFAIK. Waipu, 1.5 hrs north of Auckland - anywhere near Keri Keri? I worked there for a while.
  10. Far too early for a tree, tend to be a bit traditional and put it up about Xmas eve or a day before - then leave it up for the full 12 days. I know some people who stick the tree up on Dec 1st, then get sick of it and have it down by New Year. Never got this obsession with rushing things. We always go out as a family to forage for greenery, as for paying for a tree - hardly traditional in this household!
  11. Brushcuttrs are far worse than saws IMO, especially using scrub blades. The slightest imbalance makes them vibrate badly. Don't use them so much now, but when I did, used to let the harness take all the strain and rest hands almost on the end of the handles, thus avoiding most of the vibes. Try not to grip so tightly, and use anti-vib gloves - you don't get a second chance.
  12. Don't you realise that posting 'FACT' after a comment makes it the undeniable truth? The fact that Frank uses the term indicates to me that he's probably too young to have heard of Linn - probably in his early twenties. But you're right, quality kit that it is, stating that Naim make the best hi-fi in the world is extremely debatable - FACT! (sorry:001_tt2:)
  13. Anyone watching? Salitas no mug, unbeaten in 30. Khan in 6, or a decision.
  14. Ha!, I remember that set up well, mine is of the same vintage - only the next level up. Saved up for ages to buy it, nearly went for the 505/3020 combo, but after ages in the demo room plumped for the Rega - and never looked back. I remember some of my less musically aware mates reactions '' Blimey, how much - and you have to alter the speed by lifting the deck?! '' Great deck, though a mate who's got a Planar 2 has had difficulty getting hold of a new stylus. Still all going strong, love the 'warm' feel you get from a classic old amp and vinyl. It does sound different and I do prefer it, its just the space issue. Try and track down a second hand half-decent deck - and get spinning, its great.
  15. Ah, now you're talking serious kit, as opposed to something just to get up with in the morning or listen to a bit of evening radio. I've still got a shed load of vinyl that I listen to on a seperates system headed up by a Rega Planar 3 deck, Creek amp and Mordaunt Short speakers - all British built. Naim is excellent kit, I agree, but a little out of my budget nowadays.Bet you got a Linn Sondek to go with yer Naim amp - or don't you do vinyl? Increasingly I find that to get that little bit extra quality you have to spend loads, whereas the jump from crap to decent isn't that great in cash terms. Thats why I rate the Denon systems so highly, great sound at a reasonable price and a compact package. With a family, its hard to justify the space a seperates system takes up.
  16. Been coppicing on a 1 in 3 brake, that with the rain is like felling on a ski slope. My Haix boots have been next to useless in terms of grip - a big ask, I know. Might invest in a pair of Treeme aqua stops with the extra screw-in studs. Anyone tried them?
  17. As opposed to the now mainly Chinese manufactured, over priced Bose. But Hey, don't take my word for it. Look up the press reviews. If you want MY own opinion, I've just bought a Denon RCD M37 DAB and I'm well pleased with it. (Shh! From Richer Sounds!)
  18. Can't adjust the tensioner to line up with the hole? Bar sitting back correctly? Not being funny, but how can you have 130+ posts on an Arb. forum and not know how to put a bar on a saw?
  19. Very good, but a case of style over substance. If you like your audio system as a ''style statement '' with all the bells and whistles then fine, but all a bit bling IMHO. In terms of listening quality, you can get a lot more bangs per bucks from a manufacturer like Cambridge Audio, for example. Richer Sounds is as good a place as any to start. They are very competitively priced, and they know their stuff.
  20. Takes me back. Already posses it, but would be nice to see it (or indeed virtually anything else) beat Cowell's latest plastic product to the top spot. Not sure that the Xmas no.1 has that much kudos nowadays though. For a great version of ''Killing...'', check out the YouTube performance at Glastonbury '94.
  21. Wont be an issue in Scotland, will it?
  22. Lovely, but surely ''The Birds'' was Hitchcock, not Hancock. (like the way it left you a little deposit, ungrateful little sod!)
  23. Looking at the spelling, I'm amazed he's listed it at all.
  24. Mate of mine came out in an unexplained rash for years before finally getting it diagnosed by an expert. Turns out he's allergic to a liverwort(!) that grows on hazel and on laurel. As long as he avoids both these species. he's fine. Drove him up the wall for ages. He also had to give up beekeeping after developing an allergy to stings!
