I think that if they bring back corporal punishment then it would put a lot of people off of comitting a crime. If someone robs someone of their human right, through rape, murder etc, then they should have no human right of their own. The criminal in this case ended up gettin what was coming to him, and won't be committing any more crimes. But i would say that the householder shouldn't of brought a cricket bat to the guys head till it broke in three places. But in the heat of things i would have probably chased the criminal aswell.

Thats very interesting. it will be interesting to see what he finally comes up with, and how he will try to get this across to the every day person, or whether this will be more for the people in the trade of ecology and the like.

I personally have voted to say that climate change is a man made thing, although i do know that the earths climate has changed many times over millions of year. I have voted this way because i think that mankind has sped up the process to a rate that many living things cannot cope with. if the climate was to change at the rate that it would naturally happen then many of the organisms on earth could adapt. As it is at the monment many organisms cannot adapt and so they are just dieing out. We (Humans) are by far NOT the smartest living things on the planet, it just so happens that we are capable of make things and adapt to many different curcumstances. We (Humans) kill off numorous species of organisms all the time just because of the way that we use and abuse the earth and everything that it contains. As to whether this will be possitive or negative for the trees of the UK, we will not truely know this until the time comes around. what is expected though is for much of the world to move more towards desert and the UK and other places to get colder, this is because as the ice sheets melt the amount to fresh water going into the golf stream increases, this in turn will cause the golf stream to stop. the golf stream stopping will mean that all the heat that is brought over from that part of the earth will no longer be brought over causing the UK to get colder. what is also possibly expected is that we may find it hard for us to grow some fruit, like apple for example. This would be because of unexpected late frosts killing the blossom. This could become a bad problem in the future, not being able to grow some of the most basic fruit.

Isn't a professional someone that if not knowing can find out the answer, particullary in the case of botanical names. This is of course while not being a cowboy.

Its of a very big Black Poplar, the stem of it is about 1m across. The picture doesn't really give the size of the fungus, the big one in the middle is probably close to 8ins in size (if not a little bigger). This made me think that it might be a bit big for armillaria ?? i think that there may have been some growth at the base before. There is a road fairly close to the tree, and a cannal the other side with another road.

Saw this fungus on a very big Popla. Was wondering if you could tell me what it is and what it might be doing to the tree. It seems to be coming out of the bark, and at the base of the tree.

i find that strimmers make my hand shake uncontrolably after a while, thats when i decide that i should give them a little rest. its even worse in cold weather, i think thats quite a bit down to circulation though.

even though they washed off the soil they could have still brought over pests and diseases. surely it would have helped the enviroment that the trees live in to leave them where they were?

i've been in Bournemouth for the day. There was some hellish weather on the way down. counldn't see for periods on the motorway cause the rain was so strong. my car was been in blown all over the place. The wind was causing some problem down in Bournemouth. i saw quite a few snap outs, one tree had no top left on it. even one of the lamp posts came down across the road. the bilboards were beening blown down aswell.

Is lime wood any good?

I've started making sloe gin this year, hopefully ready for christmas. the book i used said; 3 1/4 lbs of sloes, rinsed 2 litres of gin and 6 oz of sugar, it also says that if you have more of a sweet tooth then add more sugar. (so i added more) I used the cheapest gin i could find (value) cause i thought that the more expencive gin already tastes nice (i was told this by another sloe gin maker in the drinks aisle) I froze the sloes and then pricked them as well. i found it best to use a fork when they are still hard, cause its too hard when they have defrosted, an they may quash in your hand. although it is cold work. I put it all into a demijohn, but there is a lot of airspace in it so i don't know if that is good or bad also shake it daily, this makes sure that all the sugar is dissolved, and it quickly goes a dark colour. i've also heard that vodka is meant to be quite nice so am doing that too:biggrin:

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I will have a look on these unis websites. I'm at Capel Manor College finishing an ND in arb and have done and ND in Hort already, so have some of the basic knowledge, and hopefully i can go on to a uni course and to alright. again, thanks for all the advice

Hi everyone I was just wondering if someone could give me some pointers on universities. The sort of Uni courses i am looking at doing are Ecology, Countryside Management or Countryside Conservation. I was just wondering if i could get some advice on what Universities have a good reputation for these sort of courses, and what kind of jobs i could get after a degree in one of these areas and what sort of pay these are. The student life and sports/outdoor activities are quite important to. I have looked at some Uni booklets and thought Aberystwth looked very good Any advice welcome Cheers Dom
