  1. Someone said on here recently that in efficient firewood production you ideally wouldnt have to touch the split firewood at all. I thought this made a lot of sense. So what are the best ways to keep handling the firewood to a minimum? I spoke to a guy the other day that processes a lot of spruce for firewood. His preferred method is stacking the lengths of timber in an open yard, leaving gaps at regular intervals to allow airflow and covering the top with plastic. He then leaves them for 14 to 18 months and processes straight in to bags or trailer as the orders come in. Is this satisfactory? or will it still be wet in the middle?
  2. I was at a foresty demo last Thursday, held in a forest owned by a couple of brothers that buy in a LOT of sitka spruce puplwood for converting to both woodchip and firewood. Their own forest is now at first thinning stage and is mostly Sitka, with a few acres of ash. He spoke about the firewood business and someone asked him if he would be converting the ash thinnings to firewood, and he replied 'yes, but due to the low quantity I have, I wont be selling it. If my customers got used of hardwood, they wouldnt want my Sitka anymore'...
  3. What do you consider a 'fair' price for a cubic metre of hardwood firewood then, for a firewood supplier that has to buy his/her timber in, process it, store/season it, and deliver it to the customer 12 months later?
  4. And its probably rubbish, otherwise it would be well worth buying up all his stock and easily doubling your money!
  5. Would £1400 not come close to a new 10/11 ton honda petrol model? I bought a woodline bull special with honda engine about 2 years ago for €1300 plus vat. For something in the 7 ton bracket, the lawnflite doesnt look bad value... Log splitters | F R Jones and Son
  6. It might be worth looking at buying a purpose built 'off the shelf' splitter, either petrol or if you want it on a tractor, pto powered. If you are going to have to buy both the splitter and powerpack, youre not going to save much.
  7. This guide appeared here a while back... 1 SOLID m3 = 1.54 STACKED m3 = 2.5 THROWN m3 1 STACKED m3 = 0.65 SOLID m3 = 1.63 THROWN m3 1 THROWN m3 = 0.62 STACKED m3 = 0.4 SOLID m3 Your 26 ton load might = 26 cu metres, meaning 65 loose cu3?
  8. Well? How are these working now? I'm thinking of getting one.
  9. Thanks for all the suggestions. I think vented bags are the way to go. Can some of these bags stand up to the sun etc better than others?
  10. Would vented bags be an idea to save on rehandling?
  11. Whats the ideal way to store them?
  12. I was planning on processing it in the forest, into a tractor tipper trailer and back to the yard. I dont have a timber trailer/crane and would prefer not have to buy one!
  13. Thinning my ash forest at the moment, and was planning on processing them straight away, but was told this evening that this was a bad idea, (he reckoned the logs would go mouldy) and I should stack them in lengths and process them next year. Is he right?
  14. You might be better breaking it up to sell it. You will get plenty of takers for the ash and the machinery and a localish guy (that already has the machinery) might buy the 'client list'
  15. There is always lots of talk here about what price to charge for firewood, but how about getting paid for it? Do you firewood merchants find it hard to get money out of some people? Do you take cheques? Do you ask for payment before you 'tip'?
  16. Thanks for that Certainly food for thought..
  17. Out of interest, how does the £30 a tonne break down, and what approx is a each cubic metre of firewood costing to process?
  18. I reckon if fahrenheit is buying 1.2 cm3 for £55, he is on a winner and best of luck to him. A quick google turns up plenty of suppliers selling 1 cm3 of kiln dried hardwood for £120 plus. The problem is where does one get 1.2 cm3 for £55?
  19. I was at a forestry show in Co Offaly last Saturday and there was stand with gtm chainsaws, chippers, lawnmowers etc. Sorry didnt get any info as I wasnt interested. These guys might have their info... IRISH FORESTRY WOODLAND & BIO ENERGY SHOW 2013 ? ?
  20. Wheres the best place to buy these as regards price and quality? TIA.
  21. I had a Nugent 10' tipper and it was a serious weight empty. Much heavier to pull than the same non tipper. Just something to be aware of, especially the way diesel is going!
  22. Same here, timber sitting nicely flat on a table makes more sense than trying to hold it on its edge. Whatever you buy, make sure its at a nice working height.
