  1. Any info on why he packed in would be useful?

    Yards...

Shipping containers alone are fetching £12.50 a week just for storage around here (with no mess or noise for the Landlord) so that is a cracking deal.
  3. I move a stack of 4 IBCs on 'agricultural' concrete but the floor has to be clean. We stack them outside with the fork truck and then move them inside on a pallet truck and it is much easier with two people. A stack of five is the max we have moved like this and it is stability of the stack that becomes the bigger worry. Second hand 2t pallet trucks fetch around £50-£60 so it isn't much to lay out to try and if you can't get on with it then it will still be worth £50 to someone else. Go for a standard truck as the euro pallet trucks are much much narrower and this makes side to side stability a problem when moving a stack (and they are generally easier to find and a bit cheaper).
  4. The most dangerous bit was being lifted in a chain harness. Blood blisters where you really don't want them.
  5. Is it appropriate for Arbtalk? A bit 1970's don't you think?
  6. I believe the longevity and success of Arbtalk is a much to do with the hard work and diligence of the moderators upholding standards; a constant battle (punctuated with regular very public purges) to elevate content from the seemingly inevitable slide downhill. Seeing the attached advert was a bit of a surprise. I am no prude but I personally don't think this advert should be topping a page of Arbtalk. If Sugi want to send out gynacological calendars and the like to their own customers that is their call but is it really appropriate for this forum in 2014? What do others think? Harmless fun or everyday sexism?
  7. Even though I believe it was one of the most crass decisions a major corporate has made in recent times I have some sympathy with someone dictating how anyone should run their business. It will be all telling how they face the market after the ruling... 1) Will it be a bold "we got it wrong" statement and then get on with life or 2) That akin to a sulky kid being made to apologise through gritted teeth and then being as difficult as possible. It is an opportunity for Stihl to salvage some respect from the many who they disenfranchised. As with the original decision, it is their choice. I personally think it is a bit early to assume everything will immediately return to sweetness and light. We will see.
  8. And if they didn't take hours picking through the log pile and then moan about paying what it would fetch in firewood we might be much more inclined to let them know. Keep calm and keep ringing up!
  9. As even a dealer fitted towbar is considered a notifiable modification I am sure that a winch would also be... especially as it will make the truck more attractive to the naughty people. Mine is mounted in a tray that is pinned through lugs mounted on the vehicle and the electrics on a connector which means it can be safely stored away when not in use and used on multiple vehicles (at the moment it is on a three point linkage on the back of a tractor).
  10. Saw this and thought Mr Blair might knock up something better by the weekend, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9O5KkregjJw
  11. Thanks. I will look out for a copy.
  12. 16m tonnes of wood pa destined for DRAX (according to Groups Expose UK for Subsidizing Biomass and ‘Clean Coal’ as Renewable Energy | EcoWatch Misleading Greenwash or Carbon Malarkey?
  13. Hmmm interesting. So there really must be an optimum after which probability of regeneration starts to tail off? I am really surprised this has not been asked many times before but if the might of Arbtalk can't point at it then perhaps it is a study still waiting to happen?
  14. Thanks, that is useful. Perhaps I should have asked is there a point at which a species is more likely to die rather than regenerate. Two years for the birch is a real surprise (I had expected something around 4-5 years old).
  15. Is there an optimum diameter to be achieved before coppicing for the first time? If so, is it dramatically different per species? If so, is there a table available with such information? Ta, Mark

    Hardwood

Just buy it in from those selling at £50 a cube, sit back and wait. Easy life!
  17. At least it was delivered!
  18. Just for balance and again speaking as a farmer... I do know how difficult it is to manoeuvre big machines down both single track country lanes and through villages, towns and cities. I know that most motorists will not appreciate just how difficult it is winding a big rig past parked cars when the schools are tipping out but I do not expect people to move out of my way let alone make them. I do not believe anyone is going to go hungry because I don't have my foot flat on the loud pedal all the time. Harvest time IS important and very often the windows of opportunity ARE very small but that does not give farmers any more rights on the road. It is not about how fast you can go it is about how fast you can stop.

  20. We are still waiting for our bus shelter to be straightened out after some dramatic modifications with a large JD and twelve tons of spuds at the hands of an (allegedly) 16 yr old driver. Luckily for him no one was injured and the visiting plod didn't know the rules on a twin axle trailer. You will also note the remorse shown for in the photo. As a farmer, I could not believe the NFU pushing the need for speed in the 'consultation'. If bulk loads need to go faster then buy a truck.
  21. There have been a few threads on such in the past and despite feeling that it just can't be right to transport logs from Latvia, I agree that it is likely to be a serious financial consideration for 2014. At the right price I could squeeze in an artic load now. Is there a need for a thread where dealings with good, reliable providers are shared?
  22. Must be... its a ton bag of logs
  23. On the nail. I stopped selling anything other than junk via ebay after being burnt just once. Buyer confirmed they received the goods and that they were fine but put in a claim for non receipt. In the court of paypal their email which acknowledged safe receipt was not admissible and they uplheld the claim and refunded them the cost of the item from my account. Why? Because I had not used a tracked service. 1st Class with proof of postage and an email saying they had received it is not good enough. It is a great way to do your shopping, buy everything on ebay and ANY item that arrives on a non tracked service put a claim in and you WILL get your money back at the expense of honest and genuine sellers. It is all there in the small print but what a trick. Morally bankrupt.
  24. 1st December means it is time to start cutting our holly ready for the florists this morning. An very early start but the first load is now safely gathered in. As is always the case, I ended up cut to ribbons despite the gauntlets and I got a nice Zubat bite into the bargain. Ho Ho Ho my arse.
