  1. After 2 days of being piss wet in the wind blow from hell, this was the final straw.
  2. I see your dog, and raise you 3 cows
  3. After 30 years , i have learned to see through the crud, so that i don't notice it anymore.
  4. That looks like an ideal woodland for me, but you are too far away. There must be some lower impact forestry contractors in your area. Toby at Say it with wood is not too far from you.
  5. There is no right or wrong, all of the above machines have there strengths and weakness, you will have to adapt your work practices to suit their strengths. No one machine will do everything. Small forwarders are nimble, i haven't needed my winch since I've had the log bullet, but are no good over long distances. Tractors and forwarders are much quicker, carry alot more, but are a royal pain in the arse to manoeuvre amongst trees.
  6. I really like my tree shear, but.......... It is finding the right material to cut and that is within reach of the digger. Having some form of rota makes life so much easier, but they are very expensive and heavy which greatly reduces the amount you can lift
  7. I have no idea why the price dropped, given that the mill only sources timber within 50 miles, so international fluctuations shouldn't affect the price. Thankfully the owner is happy despite the price drop.
  8. My equipment is lighter weight, easier to move( I can mover it all myself), and doesn't use large amounts of fuel. Experience to know that i can make this site work despite saw logs nearly halving in value in the last year. Lastly a good bunch of reliable sub contractors with a good work ethic.
  9. I generate my own work, and use MWMAC to register the courses. At the moment I run 4-6 courses a year, because i am so busy. Once i get abit more decrepit i will increase the amount of training. I could probably generate enough training work to keep me busy full time, but i am enjoying felling and climbing, and i enjoy the variety. Yes it is worth pursuing, but not many are cut out to be trainers. Give me a tinkle if you want 07966792798
  10. I always think of Lawson as sweet like Turkish delight
  11. You will have a days verification to see if you have the required knowledge and skills. You need a teaching qualification (PTLLS), H&S qualification (IOSH), and then a week long standard setting course. I think it took me about 18 months. It costs a lot!
  12. The woods i am in at the moment Is 650m3 of good quality spruce. The owner had tried 3 or 4 contractors , and all said the same thing, it wasn't worth there while as there wasn't enough volume to make it cost effective.
  13. I suspect that once the hire company finds out what you want it for, they won't let you have it. Most hire diggers don't have fops guarding which you will definitely need . I priced up a stroke head for my Doosan, and that was around £35k. I can not justify it. Manual felling and a digger with a grab to sort and stack the timber for the forwarder will speed thing up. Shear heads have a lot of limitations, but in the right situation are very effective. The other issue which is always overlooked is lifting capacity. It will be a very expensive mistake when you get it wrong. It is very hard without practice to judge how much of a tree you can lift.
  14. The 30m/s cut off for saws, is because of chain shot. Below this speed it is unlikely to happen.
  15. Doosan working hard over the last couple of days.
  16. Silva... Cedar Shingles from Vincent Timber WWW.VINCENTTIMBER.CO.UK Cedar Shingles Cladding and Cedar Shingles Shakes supplied nationwide by Vincent Timber.
  17. I like the waxcap photo 👍 Wot are the small blobby ones?
  18. Any thoughts, i am heading towards a Woodwax, but not sure. Growing out of a bed of spruce needles .
  19. If it falls, what is it likely to fall on? If nothing of importance leave it alone to do its thing, don't park near it particularly in stormy weather.
  20. Ask if they have had a BS5837 tree report, and what mitigation measures are in place. You will have cause to object if they haven't. The tree will become a bone of contention in the future because of its proximity
  21. Absolute Peanuts, if you are lucky. Someone is making money from biomass, but it aint the likes of you and me
  22. We are losing alot of Lawson's cypress to Phytophthora here in west Wales. They normally have the dark lesion on the bark.
  23. I've had the solidur water proof jacket from Chris forestry for 18 months, and it is still waterproof. Good value at less than £100
  24. Don't tell anyone that in west Wales . You can't make a living selling roadside at that price. Lucky you
  25. The big disadvantage of skip chain the resulting damage when you hit something, less teeth massively inceases the amount of damage. One nail can result in loss of half a tooth. I have stopped using skip chain.
