  1. My understanding of the 'ranking system' is different Trades - have levels from unskilled to skilled Professions - is doctors lawyers etc Never the twain shall meet, I think probably due to the English class system. So the professions don't occupy the 'skilled bracket' but a whole nother league called the professions. This view allows everyone elses view to fit in as we can still be skilled or semi skilled in this ranking:001_smile:
  2. Thats amazing Dave, small world isn't it and that does seem to be the same tree, except I arrived there by more humble means. Thanks for posting that, didn't notice last night as was deeply embroiled in the old man climbing thread:biggrin:
  3. Yeah I read that one mate. I was well into a bottle of wine and decided to wait for the cold light of day before offering him anything and getting his hopes up. I might pm him today.

But I need a ready made treeworker as I've found that if I'm up the tree I can't train the person on the ground. Really you need 3 people on site to train someone. Also the days I have where I need extra proper tree person are quite limited, I think I'll call him for a chat today anyway

  4. Thanks for the pms Miguel and AD. (I just phoned and got your ansaphone AD) Its a long way from where you are (Cornwall). couldn't be much further distance wise, but in principal it would be worth it just to show this lot even if we all made a massive financial loss on the day, just for the hell of it. You only live once:biggrin: Vive los viejos, in my best spanfrench
  5. Just got cut off when I replied. Anyway, pm your phone number if you would AD and we'll sort out a day, according to travel arrangements and your levels of what your'e happy with etc.
  6. Hi mike, was just re-reading bits of this and wondered if this was my background, that your'e refering to. No prob with that mate - its all good. I shall now put my employer hat on, at the risk of urinating. Not a dig, I get you and like your style. Blunt as ***k is good. I would employ any of the late starters who have posted on this thread and will offer them a days work at full freelance rates right now.
  7. :confused1:Mike Hill - Would you just stop changing your avatar for just a minute. This thread is confusing my few remaining braincells as it is
  8. Thanks for the clarification peter. Thats more to do with the challenge post I laid down. This requires more thought. I have just re-read mikes original post and it is saying that start younger is better. So = My Bad . Its obvious that tho innit:001_smile:
  9. So is that where you were going with this peter. You are someone I respect from seeing you on the forum for years. I have to say I'm a little dissapointed. Unless you were making some other point, or just made that one badly. or am I missing something, I'm sure I am:001_smile:
  10. I thought there was another part to the question Peter. The answer Is - Yes I think we may be falling into the arbtalk trap of having different interpretations of what the thread is about. I'm arguing for a place for late starters. Others are arguing that younger ones make better climbers. I'm not sure which its about and would appreciate clarification:001_smile:
  11. Yep Paul Although H&S has its place, it is indeed sweet music to have less of it. H&S is too much form filling without achieving treework goals, the same culture that is, arguably, the malaise of this very nation itself. You know I want you to check out our fantastic treework. I'm actually answering the previous posts about RAs as much as talking to you paul.
  12. if you mean me. When I started I was a natural and 34 is young, if MR Ed was still here he'd tell you I was good, but I knew naught about cutting and nearly killed myself a few times. Now I've done pretty much everything treewise but it hurts so I'm methodical and unlikely to get killed as I'm wise to the dangers. But slower. When I started I was high like 9 for climbing, but low like 2 for dangerous practices. Now I'm high like 9 for not getting killed, but in the 4-5 mark for whizzing around the tree:thumbup1: Edit = Good question peter and hope i've answered in the spirit intended
  13. old and a girl too ---good on ya littletree and all my support goes with ya:thumbup:
  14. Just quoting myself here, as a late starter. How many of you business owners can beat my (approx) 14 yrs of experience before setting up on your own. Loads of you can beat my experience, almost everybody - but specifically before setting up a company.
  15. Dogs get well walked in these heated arbtalk wee chats, I'm joining you to take my cat for his evening stroll. I don't need to chillout though as I'm way too old to have got annoyed thus far:biggrin:
  16. I just tried to add this as an edit but time expired, so will be out of context. I fully accept that those who have been in the business from younger, know more about trees than me, and are better climbers than me in general. I would not want my experience direspected by newcomers and am not disrespecting yours. My point is that there is a place in the industry for late comers.
  17. This doesn't necessarily follow Mike. I started at 34 ish and was climbing after 2 months, a couple of years later did part of an HND Arb (1st year), then a degree in Environmental Science, carried on working for others in various countries, then survived 6 years as a freelance climber working 5 days a week for 4 different companies in Cheshire (with some breaks overseas like working in NZ). I set up on my own 2 years ago. My pre setting up on my own experience I would submit is actually more than some others who run their own firms.
  18. Steve, after tennis elbow, comes tennis shoulder, this hurts even more:001_smile:
  19. My ballet post was just a thread bumper (although I thought it was funny) as I wanted this issue to get the discussion its now getting and there had been no posts since 9 oclock last night. Great to get all the different view points that only arbtalk can do:thumbup1:
  20. A few more just for you Rob. First is Arthurs Pass from Christchurch to west coast South Island, others are nooks and crannies on the west coast heading north
  21. I reckon ex ballet dancers would make good tree climbers...
  22. Sorry treeson and NZ paul, for the confusion, more than one kiwi in scotland then. While the threads bumped here's another one of those pohutakawas from coromandel. can't edit the typo in the edit, swap r for w
  23. Just wonsering Paul. It would be good if you could post a draught version of the mini contractor scheme on here before its roll out in finished form in January. Although it may get shredded, it may just iron out sticking points that can be negotiated. Not sure if that was your intention anyway? I also wondered if there may be any industry regulation models from the states that would help to make it as inclusive as possible and not too hung up on deal breaker H&S stuff. Any input from the TREEHOUSE may be helpful.
  24. Albedo

    capel manor.

Yes shame indeed hama:blushing: We missed you all but when you catch up on the action I think you'll find that we kept the home fires burning. Loads going on as we speak as it happens:biggrin:
