  1. There are two sites locally with areas cordoned one says dangerous tree branch above path. This was ripped down in days and people were walking through. The other site has remained cordoned off for about three months, the sign there says caution wasps nest. So I'm going to change all my tree cutting signs to wasps nest removal.
  2. Thought this would amuse you arbtalkers. Was working for a guy the other day who had an amusing story about his vet. Apparently the vet had some land and needed a tractor. He heard of a local farm sale with two tractors for sale. When he turned up apparently the yard had be broken into the night before and the batteries had been stolen from the tractors. He bid anyway and won one. He trailered it home and started to look it over. When he looked in the toolbox he found £20000 in cash. He rang the auction company and explained but they just said he got what he bid for so could keep it. He did some probing and found that the previous owner kept his savings in the toolbox. So the scumbags stole two knackered batteries and there was £20000 cash sitting there in an unlocked toolbox. I suppose you don't expect that sort of thing in an unlocked toolbox, particularly on a tractor where tools often go walk about.
  3. I am intending to use the hydraulic system on my land rover to run a splitter. It doesn't , and I am pretty sure it never did, have a hydraulic winch. From what I can make out from the above post I have the last type. Will this system run a small splitter and can you explain the bypass hose to me? Also can I fit a hydraulic winch to the system at a later date? I see you are in mid-shropshire perhaps you could take a look at the system as I know nothing about hydraulics. I am based in Ellesmere.
  4. It also says "Compete Tree Services Ltd" in your logo on the top left.
  5. The other thing is a special metals primer. Hammerite do one and I think it is now available in a spray can. Then you can just spray over with black hammerite. This should be fine for a canopy and is cheap to reapply when required.
  6. I apprechiate its an auction, I buy most a kit as spares or repair through eBay, then fix it up (usually just needs a carb. rebuild). Its just a very low starting price considering he must know he will more than likely get a lot more. Surely if he started it a higher price he stands a better chance of getting an even higher price? I would personally be weary of any kit priced so far below what it is worth but most buyer potential buyers would view before bidding anyway, particularly at that sort of money. I just wanted an excuse to post a unimog. I'm very unlikely to ever own one with the way my business is at the moment.
  7. Basically you can't mow, fertilise and reseed a lawn on the same visit. You need to be arranging to come back to reseed. Also I wouldn't do any sort of gardening for less than £10 an hour. I would definitely be charging more when using power tools as you have to take in to consideration fuel and consumables. If you can't afford back up tools (I can't either), you could do with learning how to carry basic repairs. All my tools have their own tool box and I try to carry basic spares for each tool. Your local dealer should be able to advise what you need.
  8. Unimog Forestry Tractor with Crane and Winch | eBay From what I have read on here this appears worryingly cheap.
  9. Is that a genuine catalogue? He isn't wearing any ppe either. Mind you he is wearing more than the scantily clad blondes in many hire catalogues.
  10. He must have to charge fortune. A crane has to be a few hundred pounds a day?
  11. Thats the route i'm thinking of going. But can't afford a hiab. I'm wondering if a swing lift would do a similar job. What's the trailer payload with the hiab mounted on it?
  12. I fear its going to be the same story with mine. Its currently at the dealers again (has now spent three times as much time at the dealers than in my hand). It had a new carb in January but I think the crank bearing may have gone now. I hope they fix it soon as the warranty runs out on the 16th of may. If they fix I'll have to flog it, can't be doing with this every few months.
  13. I am having the same problem with my 261. It's just coming up to a year old. Stihl paid for it to have a new carb in January and it still won't run/idle. I have given up and will be ringing Stihl tomorrow. I spent the day thinning with my 15 year old ms017 today. The 261 sounds like it is constantly running out of fuel so I am worried it is running lean. I will be very interested in the replys to this tread.
  14. If the tyres fit the rims they will fit. However 235/75/16 will look a little lost in the wheel arches of a defender. If 235/85/16s are rubbing on your radius arms at full lock, you need to adjust your lock stops. I have 265/85/16 on mine (I think) and they were rubbing but adjusted the lock stops and they are fine now. I though I was going to have to fit wheel spacers. They other option is wheels with a larger offset.
  15. I have a hitch lock and wheel clamp on mine. I try park in front of it at night too. I intend to get a set of letter punches and mark every removeable item on the trailer. Something like these: Letter / Number Stamp 36Pc | Screwfix.com They are cheap and permanent.
  16. I would definately arrange a visit with Highways. I know Tilhill have been having a huge problem with Highways accusing them of damaging a road with timber lorries in South Wales. The road was pretty dire before they started so I think are just using it as an excuse to get someone else to pay.
  17. Thats exactly what I had in mind. Presumably that trailer has completely different axles aswell as a suspension lift?
  18. I like the skid plate idea. I would just need to increase the departure angle, as the girder on the back usually takes lumps out of the ground offroad.
  19. Thanks SEAN TYNAN. I would like to put Land Wheels on the trailer but with an Ifor Williams flatbed trailer (LM85) you would need a big lift to get a land rover wheel in. The original tyres are very close to the body to begin with. And they are at least 16 inch overall diameter before you even consider putting it on 265/75/16s. How did you do it on your trailer or do you have the GD85 version with wheels outside the body?
  20. I am self employed forester. Looking for work as a contractor or sub-contractor. I have own Land Rover, Chainsaws, sprayer and planting spade. I have some experience thinning and about six years experience as a groundie. I have B+e, NPTC Cs30/31, Pa1/6, Lantra brushcutter, First aid at work and CSCS. I am registered as a sub- contractor with Tilhill and Flintshire Woodlands so have my own Public liability and employers liability. I will currently do pretty much anything, forestry/tree surgery based that is.
  21. I know there have been several debates on here about fast tow forwarding trailers versus Ifor Williams'. I was just thinking that crane on my Ifor Williams would be more practical. I already have a hydraulic system on my landy to run the crane as well. The only problem with dragging an Ifor Williams trailer into a woodland is the ground clearance. Has anyone ever looked into giving an Ifor Williams trailer a suspension lift? I wondered if I could knock up some leaf spring hanger extensions. It doesn't need much lift but enough space to get some larger wheels on it. Alternatively what about a body lift? I'm interested in anyones thoughts. I've got an adjustable hitch on the landy so I'm not worried about hitch height.
  22. I have a ride clearance job in Rhyader (Mid Wales), that needs to be done Monday/Tuesday next week. It is two days (four mandays) worth of work with another day of fenceline clearance at a site near Knighton on Friday. I will be driving down from Shrewsbury so can pick up on route or meet at site. Must produce nptc certificates as these are required by Tilhill who have given me the work. I pay £70 a day. Anyone interested please get in touch.
  23. Hi, I am based in Shrewsbury, but moving to Ellesmere next week. I have cs30/31 and have worked with tree surgeons on and off for about four years. As my two best friends have both gone into the industry. I set up my own business this time last year as a forester but still groundie occasionally for anyone who needs an extra pair of hands. I have may own landy, trailer and saws plus I hold my own public liability and employers liability. My email is [email protected] and mobile is 07952 072282. Tim
  24. Forgot to mention I also now have my own public liability and employer's liability insurance. As I have just registered as a contractor with Tilhill. My website is T. Lander Forestry Contractor
  25. I have set up as a forestry contractor in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. I have my felling ticket and as slowly gaining experience and confidence. I am doing the odd day for forestry firm in Ludlow but could really do with more work. I have my own 4x4 (Discovery 2), trailer (8x5 Ifor Williams) and chainsaw (ms261). I have worked with tree surgeons as a groundie on and off for six years now. I have used chainsaws all that time but only took my felling ticket earlier this year. Whereas with my own company I want to do forestry contracting, I would be greatful for any opportunities in forestry or tree surgery.
