  1. We will probably remain in our home for 30 years, but a log home would be one of few options that prompts me to move. Here's some inspiration ... just an upper loft view .... If you ever come to Oregon, check out Camp 18 restaurant east of Seaside, Oregon, along Hy. 26. One of the larger log structures in west Oregon. I keep visualizing it as a home instead of a place to eat. ...
  2. Fun topic. I know of a Giant Sequoia in Tigard, Oregon, that's starting to swallow a utility pole. Should stop by again for a photo. ...
  3. She lives in Crescent City, adjacent to the park, and does a bit of modeling on occasion. We did some size comparison and outfit photos last month when I was trying some new lenses. And we did more the past few days. Seems ideal, because she used to help with trail construction in the redwood parks some time ago. Her step dad passed away like just 2 months ago, and we did a memorial set of photos for her last month the first time we got together in the redwoods.
  4. Also posted at the "Buzz" .... Just took another crack at photographing Lost Monarch, Coast Redwood, the 8th largest tree known. May be the 7th largest, actually. This may be my favorite redwood photo so far. Just did a 16" x 20" test print that came out better than expected. From my signature page, is a blog where I posted a brief observation report on the condition of this grove now that it's seen a few visitors the past couple of years.
  5. 10 m seems in line with how long roots can grow, even for medium size trees. Whether lawns are watered and how dense soil is also seems to affect affect growth like length or depth that the roots at. ...
  6. Just spent a few days again the redwoods last week / weekend. Everything from meeting someone for a drone test flight, to hiking, to photography.
  7. Calaveras. A Giant Sequoia stump.
  8. Don't have a bike anymore, but here's a photo I took yesterday of another person's Harley ... The skies were gorgeous yesterday, and on a whim, thought why not something out of the ordinary and stop by the Harley Davidson dealership and see if anyone would like a photo with their bike against the nice sky. The man in the photo rode is and agree to pose. Recently moved to Oregon from southern California.
  9. The two I like best are the 5th for composition, and 2nd from the end. In the 5th, like the bend of the trunk to the right, and the background tree leaning left. ..
  10. Like the way this one came out. Cornus mas - Corneliancherry Dogwood. Guessing that these can be found in your neck of the woods too.
  11. About all I can add is that my Porter Cable used to be awesome, then the next wasn't nearly as good. Since I don't need a heavy duty one, I just what I think is a Skill ... ...
  12. There's plenty online about the coast redwoods including my pages. But one thing you may want to print or keep in a device prior to, or shortly after landing here, is the locations of the main visitor centers in case you have some specific questions. At least near Avenue of the Giants, Redwood National Park by Orick, and Crescent City, they are right en route, or a minute off the main highway in town. But if you can see where they sit on a map, it may help out for knowing which direction to head from some grove or road when you are tweaking your day.
  13. Been about 7 or 8 weeks, but I managed to get down to redwood country again this week. Some clearing, some drizzle, but enjoyed the hiking and photography all 3 days of it. Here's a few pics from the forest, and area nearby. The particular canyon is the NE gateway right before coming down into Jedediah Smith redwoods, following the Smith River. Several places have wind-shaped oaks and madrone (Arbutus) that excel any oriental garden I've seen photos of. 10 times better in person though. ...
  14. The photo file says December, and December is generally the month with the most rainfall. Also, I don't think the roots were substantial enough on the west side (it fell to the east). I was expecting to see more light colored spots in the root ball where more roots had broken off. The soil looked pretty darn good though. ...
  15. Tree blown down by small tornado, 2010, in Aumsville, Oregon, about 50 minutes south of Portland. ...
  16. Rarely do I post other's photos ... but here's something rather unique. Look very close. I messaged this model if the photo was photoshopped, and she said the photographer responded it was not. Attached are two versions. An original. And one where I cropped-out her eyes, nose and mouth to overlay on where a "face" seems to appear. It's virtually identical proportionately, and for alignment. I did not have to resize or rotate. Just paste and slide right over. If the original was not messed with, then it's one of the most unique anomalies I've ever seen. It really looks as if her face is peeking from the trunk.
  17. This is definitely one of the more entertaining threads. Good stuff ... ...
  18. You got the Genus (Abies) right. Not Korean, although, I did tinker photographing Korean fir twigs at the Hoyt Arboretum to my east, last week ... attached below. ...
  19. Did a small 30 ft. free-climb for some cone pics today. This species should jump right out for some folks familiar with it. Not native over here, but used occasionally for landscaping and gardens. ...
  20. Thuja seems realistic. There's been some big ones around. Trunk looks close enough. ...
  21. There's trunks and coast similar to that in parts of Oregon, Washington and north California. Can't quite tell what the tree was. But one of the biggest trunk on the beach photos I've ever seen. Hemlock that size is rare. Now, Sitka Spruce often sprout on a log or stump and extend roots down a few feet. That's not evident on this one, although it's not always like that. But it may be a coast redwood. ...
  22. That particular one is 'Lucifer', BTW Iris and Tiger Lily are two flowers that I tend to like better in photos than roses. ...
  23. That's food for thought ... I'm paying for a 3 m x 3 m (?) booth at a Yard, Garden and Patio Show in February ... been itching to repeat. In addition to promoting my services ... I'm putting out a couple of my redwood photos to see if they sell. Also, this flower attached below, may be the telling one whether photos or calendars would sell in a future show. This Crocosmia photo was purchased by several women customers last year, at 11 inch x 14 inch size. If it sells easy, I would very much consider trying a calendar at the show. But I would see trying a calendar outside the show too.
  24. Golden Western Redcedar
  25. Oh ... those 4 were Incense Cedar, Hinoki Cypress, Callistemon and Giant Sequoia. Here's a couple more ... Blue Atlas Cedar and Deodar Cedar
