It doesn't appear to be detrimental though, based on my quite limited observations. The climate probably helps - short, hot, dry summers and long freakin' cold, dry winters. Not very condusive to fungi and other wood eating organisms. But that begs the question, why even bother with masonry work on trees? -

Back on track with the painting tree trunks white derail. The majority of urban trees are treated that way here in China. The practice goes hand in hand with sealing up cavities and large wounds with concrete or mortar. Not sure the thinking behind it but it seems to work. Or maybe the tree doesn't care either way, and just gets on with it's own thing of healing up. That one even had drainage pipes built in. -

I think it would be a revelation to quite a lot of people that all fruit comes from flowers, and all flowers create some kind of fruit. Being asked if it's safe to eat apples from a tree in their garden is a particular favorite of mine.
