  1. If they have approached you with regard to you givign them money then of course its a scam! Even if its legit, you wont get any work from it, you have to get the work from the council by being on their list, they dont pay outside companies for that, although thye might use the AA or Chas or something along those lines. The small council contracts are generally so cheap that you couldn't afford to pay someone to help you not get them.
  2. Yes, I think I have been told now! But i'm still happy with what i have! BUT, as for big bits that might damage the winch, I dont think there is such a thing? If using 16mm rope you would break the rope before you broke the winch. 19mm, maybe not, that can handle more than the winch can. Did you ever see the volvo drop test?
  3. I will try and get mine up to date for the comp. Its all in date but I might do a seperate inspection for just the stuff I'm bringing.
  4. Another point is that climbing talent is no good without a decent work ethic.
  5. My understanding is that the loler cert is to speed up the process rather than a pre requisite? Is that about right?
  6. 30 paid up in advance is massive!! I bet lots will come on the day and not be able to enter. Get the applications in quickly folks!
  7. Ah, thomson! Yes so you have sorry! I can 't seem to get past 36 likies!
  8. I liked your facebook so you need to like mine!! All loks good so far!
  9. He's good, but get him a proper tree! He'll be fine, I'm sure, but he needs proper test.
  10. Would you get penalised for bringing the limb up? Or are the anchor points really too poor (low) for that? i.e. just run along the side/underside of the limb?
  11. Oh Ok, it clips to you like a second line or something?
  12. Yes, so what was he supposed to be doing with it? The climb in general looked good fun, I'd have had a go!
  13. And it sounds like "Arbitrary Surgeons" It is a poor name IMO too, Generally anything Arbor will not mean anything to the people you are trying to work for. Tree Surgery is a bad enough term anyway but people do know what it is. If you called yourself "XYZ tree lopping" you would get more work! I'm nto suggestign you do that of course but it would work better than anything Arbor related.
  14. No, after the re direct he collects another rope for a while? Ah, I see! Can't tell from the pics that those are bungee lines, looks solid.
  15. Looks good. In the video, what the prussik that you un clip and then re attach for? Didn't get that! And in the pics, is that a simulated limb walk? Is that a comp or a demo? Cant work out why they are faffing on it instead of just walking to the end, is it wobbly or something?
  16. No one know what arbor is other than an arch in the garden with a seat under it. It will get you in the A's in yellow pages along with all the thousands of other Arbor care, arbor tree, arbor crap. etc etc.
  17. Just a shorter sling and you'll be fine. Yes its a mess but not a problem.

    TCC advice

You will be well looked after, they mix up the novices with the more experienced and even though its a competition everyone help each other. Not sure about kit lists, make sure your rope is long enough! A 37m is rarely enough, 45 should be ok. I think this year you do need all kit Loler certified, its a new thing so not sure if you can get it done there or not. The kit can get checked there, and maybe written certs can be issued independantly from the TCC kit check.
  19. I'm still lost for words! I'm going to go and talk about GRCS' a bit more!
  20. Fair enough, and I think that was the general conclusion at the start of this thread. HAvign not had any problems blocking with the GRCS and with the other benefits of it I remain biased towards it.
  21. Oh, is it, didn't know that! HAving not ever used a HObbs I am biased!
  22. This one of the biggest Beech I have done, didn't need the bollard or the 19mm rope. Of course we could have used the bollard a bit more and it might make sense to reduce wear on the capstan but my groundie prefers the capstan and he's in charge! 23. Not really possible!! The tension is held by the capstan. You can drop sections on the capstan, so pretensioning is possible. Even better than the Hobbs IMO becasue you can pull rope though as the section falls, this is better than tensioning thew line. If you are blocking a stem, a pretensioned line will be pulling the load into the stem (straight down) and cut close the cut onto the saw and cause problems. It can even make it harder to push the logs off the stem. (of course a pulling line could be used). With the GRCS, if used withing a certian load limit which IMO is anything you would dare do with a 16mm rope!, you can leave the line untensioned (not slack) and as you push the log off the ground pulls in the slack right up until the log passes the pulley then its let out again. I dont think thats possible with the HObbs. Of course there comes a point when this doesn't work, then you dig out the 19mm rope put the bollard on and get on with it. We dont even take the bollard on to site unless the 19mm rope is coming aswell. All the blocking I have done with a 14 or 16mm rope has been straight onto the capstan.
  24. Snatching is when there is nothing left to lower off. So even with a portawrap that you cant pretension, if you have a higher anchor point then you are lowering not snatching. Also called negative blocking. The 245 was just an example, if you get that from 33 then waht will you get from 100 or 200kgs, thats the point Peter is making. Peter, in answer to your question, can I be certian that is will work 100% of the time? Yes, with main groundie I am that confident. And if I wasn't and come up with a plan B or C. I agree it is good to know the worst case scenario, and we make sure that we only push the limits when the WCS scenario is nothing disatrous. So a snapped rope over a road is never going to happen, but in a back garden when all your trying to achieve is less dents in the lawn then we push it a bit more. Can't remember ever snapping a lowering line or destroying a pulley through shock loading.
