Surely that can't be right! The tree owner or the neighbour could have got the permission even though they are not going to be doing the work? A tree surveyor could get it, but anybody else could do the work.

I think the permission is for the tree not for the tree surgeon. Its a shame though. ON the permission notice it should say work to be carried to BS etc so if the company doing the work are crap you might get them pulled off the site but for a takedown there is no good or bad job in the customers eyes, its either gone or its not, so cheapest wins. In a perfect world we could quote first and then if that is accepted we go for the permission, but this isn't the case this time. Perhaps you could ask for the opportunity to match another price, but only if you can see the quote in full, then you can check out who they are using, if insured etc etc. at least then you get an idea of what you are up against. Another example of this happening is this. Mr A has a crap house to sell for 100K. Mr B likes it but wants to build a huge extension, so gets planning permission for the extension prior to buying the house. The permission is for the building not the buyer! So Mr A now has a house for sale with permission for a huge extension already in place, therefore house is now on sale for 125K...

I just got three sets of blades from saturn. Look ok, but they also sent some bolts that look as though they have been cut to length with a hacksaw, they look rubbish. Has anyone used them? I'm just going to get proper bolts and give these back at the apf!

The crane could have put it on the forwarder but it would never be able to get it off the other end, so we disced it all up! Not my job!

Can't get it right all the time! I don't use a lanyard for every cut. I should and I would encourage others to but I don't, and I'm not bothered by the odd picture coming up with errors in it. If I'm totally comfy in my position, with no chance of a swing and cutting away from me, or below my top rope then I get on with it. I use lanyard all the time when out on a limb, IMO thats what they are for. I still have some bad habits and dodgy ways! I didn't know what a lanyard was for my first 4 years of climbing, for the next 6 years I hardly ever saw anyone else climbing a tree! I only got triple action krabs/cambium savers/ aerial rescue ticket etc in 2002 after ten years of climbing! I've improved since then but make no apology for my pictures, I'll find some much worse ones if you like, heres one

Ok, I totally agree with you now! Conifer are a whole different thing, there should be a seperate NPTC for them. Chainsaw boots in a Leylandii hedge yes, and all round protection. Can you imagine having to rescue someone from the top of a leyland hedge!! They don't teach that scenario do they!

We often have pikeys asking if they can buy our dogs, or breed from them etc. Its mostly there way of checking you out, what gear you have and how much of a fight you are capable of.

11mm fits in a smaller bag, the tail end follows you round the tree nicer, it will even come over a branch with you especially if your using a hitch climber. It hurts your hands though especially if you are big and/or old! Arbormaster is possibly the best 13mm around. Hard wearing, long lasting, low stretch etc. I used it for rigging work all the time but it recently got stolen (I left it up a tree to return to after the weekend, silly mistake as next to a fishing lake with pikey types) so I'm thinking about getting some more as I really miss it!! I was glad I didn't connect the retriever on my rope guide! That was still up the tree on the monday morning!
