  1. My latest top tip is to have a key operated on off switch on the blower. The boss keeps the key and this stop the groundies thinking they can look busy using the blower when there is still logs/kit etc to move!!!! I should get onto stihl about this problem
  2. Don't you know anything? No notch = no direction.
  3. Another problem is this.... I'm self employed running a small business with 1 or 2 employees. I hurt myself. I tell employees what to do each day from my bed where I am lying in agony. As far as the insurance company are concerned I'm supervising which is working and I won't get a penny. Insurance is for employees only who get time off and sick pay etc. If your self employed you have no chance unless you genuingly are off work. I have insurance to pay my mortgage if I'm permanently injured but no generall accident cover.
  4. Is the pulley and the sling only £7.50??
  5. Your sytem seems plenty good enough, the fixe might be neater but it is best to use what you've got.
  6. I wonder why they dropped that name?? If they have cleaned up their act and changed the name to make a fresh start then I may be wrong! I would still throw logs at reps though!
  7. Rich, have you had a claim? If not then your renewal will be fine, if so then yes wait till renewal and check the small print carefully, in fact there may be something in the small print of the original contract so they may not even mention it again. I'm glad your happy with it so far, but I've met people who are happy to get tree work done by pikeys because they believe they are getting a deal.
  8. MAybe I should check that Combined is the same as CICA that I have encountered. Leg break is hypothetical. I checked out CICA when I first encountered them, I have some friends in insurance who spat on the floor at the very mention of them. Also they have been mentioned on radio 2 money advice thing but radio 2 stopped short of anything that could be slanderous.
  9. Good point, but one method of using a fixe is to have the friction tied off between the cheeks and the other end tied off to the becket (not sure its called a becket? bridge thing at bottom of pulley) so that would mean that the rope could run against the friction hitch. Hang on, the rope runs against the friction hitch all day long and we don't worry about it, we ispect and throw away as required but we don't worry about it.
  10. Sure, if the claim is made before the renewal of the insurance, but I gaurantee that body part won't be covered for that injury again but eh premium will have gone up due to the claim.
  11. Combined insurance? Is that combined insurance company of america? or something similar. Either way avoid them like the plague!! The fact that they have reps that collar you should tell you enough! We go on about how people should say no to anyone knocking on the door offering tree work, so we should do the same with reps of all kinds, its the same thing. They have no offices, just the pushy reps, the insurance is NOT AUTOMATICALLY RENEWED!!!!! They don't tell you that. Break your leg during month 11, your gonna be off work for 4 months, you inform them of the accident and the paperwork gets underway. Suddenly your no longer insured! Or they keep taking your money but that leg is no longer insured. That is how they work, they won't re insure any part of you. So if they do pay up one year for a broken leg they won't pay up if that leg gives you trouble the following year even if you breakl it again. Its illegal but somehow they keep going. Its the same with pet insurance except that is legal. Tesco pet insurance is worthless, but my dog is with a proper company, petplan, and an injury three years ago is still being paid for now with continuing medication and vet fees ( I have to pay the excess each year only). Seriously everybody avoid these pushy sales men. I throw logs at them from up the tree if they come anywhere near my worksite and I ask them if they are insured for that, if so I'll keep throwing logs. hey soon leave. I get so angry about this!!! I once was working at a equestarian center and they pitched up trying to sell insurance to these girls telling them how dangerouse working with horses is etc, they were so pushy some of the girls were in tears cos they couldn't get away. We had to call another crew who were working nearby to come and help us get rid of them, scum!
  12. If you used a petzl fixe pulley then the dmm sling could go between the plates. Good thinking though so far.
  13. Yes you are right, and your english is plenty good.
  14. If anyone has ever dropped through a fork, then that is a redirect! All you are doing using a pulley is removing the friction. Its not about second anchors, thats a whole different thing, we use ropeguides so that our fancy friction hitches work well, so therefore we need re directs for the same reason.
  15. Double pulley is less to carry.
  16. Yes 16mm is a good all round rope for everything. I'm only just thinking about getting a smaller one 13-14mm for lighter work but I don't really need it as the 16 does it all. Its not the easiest to tie onto branches so I use slings but you can tie it each time if you want. Get the biggest diameter porta wrap you can, that will let the rope run better. If your not ever going to get a hobbs/grcs then you'll never need a 19mm rope I don't think. I've only used my 19mm twice in five years and that was for snatching out Wellingtonias.
  17. correct. Then you would get 1000kgs swl, thats more like it!!
  18. call it 650-750 ish then. you can't estimate a branch weight accuratly anyway so its all guesswork. 16mm is a good rope which will do most things, as long as you don't shock load it. Its all in the lowering device really.
  19. Of course putting it on youtube brings the quality back down again [ame] [/ame]
  20. In this set up we were glad to have a little over 45m. Take advantage of twin stem rigging whenever you can, it makes everything much smoother but does use up more rope.
  21. I estimated those pieces as 680kgs using a green weight chart I found on tinternet.
  22. I use it all the time, its my main lowering rope. I've always had the 750kg figure in my head and thats the weight of my chipper! I figure I'm bever likely to be brave enough to cut something that weighs the same as my chipper and expect the rope and groundie/grcs to hold it!! 45m should be ok if not then a smaller lowering rope in a longer length would do as at 22m your are not likely to be rigging heavy stuff! Heres some pics of it in action..
  23. Honey Brothers list it as 7600kgs and Proclimber list it as 7394Kgs. My loler sheet says 7500 10:1 =750kgs swl
  24. Your a star!! That second link is some good free software! Not only does it rotate the video any which way but it also come out as DIVX compatable instead of mp4 so the quality is much better.
  25. I think a deep step cut would have been better!!
