    My new toy.

What "load" do crop sprayers carry? Surely the spray mix is not a load its part of the machinery doing a task, unless you are taking it to sell the chemical mix to someone else? And a combine can never be used as anything other than a combine, it can't get confused with a road going truck or tractor that may or may not be an agri vehicle? Its years since I drove a Mog so I'm out of date (as with most things) but we ran it on red, carried wood chip in it and even went on the motorway but I knew I was pushing my luck! I got a flat tire on the M6 once and just sat waiting to see if the Agri tyre company or the cops would show up first! One hour later trye back on rim and away we go no worries!
  2. HAving a popular butt is not a good thing for a tree guy!!
  3. No one said you were faster or better, just scary! I bet you have pulled some cunning stunts in you time though!
  4. Mr Ed did in fact invent trees
  5. for lowering small stuff with no lowering line, girth hitch a sling to the branch, clip the lower part of you climbing rope to it. Groundie holds your rope where it comes out of the rope bag, cut off the branch, it gets lowered on a bight, unclip it, groundie feeds rope back into and end of rope stays in bag where it belongs.
  6. A cocoon is similar to a micro pulley but its very smooth and of course there is no additionla ring to go through. A rescue pulley would be smoother but the second ring still adds friction. You would want to pull a CS/rescue pulley out of the tree in one go, it could be painful. Either a small gold ISC pulley or a petzl fixe are ideal.

Yep. Quite cramped especially downstairs in the basement. Upstairs theres a piano lounge bar etc. Quite a rare place, the owner is a genuine music fan. I went there once and Grandmaster Flash was playing in the basement!!
  8. Yes it could do. The micro pulley/prussik is for lifting the main prussik and as such does not contribute anything towards load carrying. Use of a cambium saver increases the load at the prussik, the more friction you lose at the tie in point the more load you put on the friction hitch and prussiks tend to bind up more than newer hitches. Adding a pulley at the CS reduces friction and a ropeguide even more so, therefore the prussik will bind more and more. Try it one stage at a time and see how it feels. A binding prussik will remove any advantages that a ropeguide might add.
  9. I would cut the small ring off and use a Krab. This helps with alligment but also you can un clip it in the tree and reposition without unthreading your rope. (lanyard in!) A mallion is better for security if you prefer. If the cambium saver is not tight around a stem then side loading of the krab should not be an issue but mallions are more secure so I would be best to advice mallions, done up tight with a spanner of course.

My photo is taken directly outside a night club called Sub Tone. Did you find that one? If you look at the thin tree to foreground you can see a sign saying SU.....E Its towards the "posh end" and the nearest club to where I live (in the posh bit).
  11. The reason I ask is cos the rope guide is SO good that it put too much tension at the hitch and most hitches especially prussiks lock up too much when using a ropeguide. The VT however works best (when set correctly) with as little friction as poss and the ropeguide was designed to be used with this and other similar hitches. If you body thrusting (not really a thrust with a VT) then you need something in place before you start, so try a pulley on a cambium saver for now. Anyone using a prussik is best to stick with a ring ring CS IMO.
  12. Do you footlock or body thrust into the tree and what friction hitch do you use? Putting a pulley on one end of a traditional friction saver is nearly as good plus you can install it from the ground.

    Ergovation

Agreed, and Buckingham have always made xxxs and xxxL to order if required, I remember Rip Tomkins daughter had an XXXXS made for her years ago. Can't remember what model it was, blue and red. From what I read on the ergovation the leg loops/pads are standard size and its the back pad that you buy to the correct size and the webbing is standard.

from the build quality of buckingham gear I would "guess" it is better built than the TM. I'll be replacing my TM next spring, thats 2 years use, not great but I didn't expect much more from it.

How to over complicate things the american way! It comes in SIX different sizes and I bet it weighs loads more than the TM. It comes with a 41 page instruction manual! Ha Ha! http://www.buckinghammfg.com/instructionsandwarnings/Ergovation%E2%84%A2Instructions_Warnings.pdf
  20. I'd stick with it! Arbor master is good stuff, its not exactly thin! Blaze etc is thin, arbormaster is a good all round rope IMO.
  21. Shame they used conifers instead of Yew but they do look good for now, will they last 100 years though?
  22. I don't understand! Ed, in your pics is that two different machines? And is it small logs that are going in?
  23. Sounds good for a yard machine, not necessarily for taking to tree jobs. I have a yard full of poplar that would be ideal for kindling, the trouble is most of it is over six inch as that is all thats left after normal chipping. Is there such a thing as a kindling press for rings of wood?
  24. I remember a while back driving through Cirencester town centre and seeing a climber that i knew, going into the bank, still wearing his harness! He must have kept it on while driving away from the job and still had it on while going around town shopping/banking etc. Ha Ha!
