    Dead Elms

Classic crash and burn...looks like nice firewood. Seems like u use a shallow scarf ( face cut) 1/4 diameter hence the big backcuts? Is that standard over their or some other reason?
  9. Gave away my kong dual ascender I simply didnt use it.
  10. Kinda lika a songa " Know when to fall them, know when to climb them, know when to walk away, know when to run!" Tree work is risky thus reduce the risk.Know the capabilities of all involved as much as possible. Keep checking ,A.B.C. Above Below Connector. 1 is none ,2 is 1 always backup. Listen to the "still small voice". that hunch take time to check . Take care out there Bye
  11. Oh Yeah!! I heard some one say once "I will climb trees any size except bonsai's " :001_smile: Me too!
  12. Hey Tom I hear you !! A similar thing happened on my harness( a Glide i think) with on of the bow loops that hold the bridge on my harness coming lose( which was sewn as well). It could have been nasty too! Yeh i regularly inspect too but i missed this. Ps Why would anyone else be wearing your harness ...these things should be personell..including ropes etc.
  13. After reading about your LOLER inspections ( which we dont have here) it re reminded me of my poor record keeping re my kit. What do u use to keep tabs on climbing equipment as for as age ,use ,coc or ce etc.? Do you use a standad pro forma? What do u do ? Thanks in advance !!
  14. What are they MB? Douglass Firs? That looks awesome but cheating with the winch!
  15. What a great old bloke. An inspiration.Over on Tree Buzz I heard of some one still work climbing at 85. I still want to climb till i drop!!
  16. Mine are in a separate tool box selected for a neat fit for my gaffs. I dismantle the pads from the shanks ( two sets ,short and long spikes) and they pack away neatly. No need for any gaff guards.Works for me.
  17. Cool:001_cool: ? how did you get it to roll so nicely?
  18. That reminds me of seeing a guy climb a big dead Euc by driving in bridge spikes to make foot and hand holds. It was in the back corner of a property and he managed to smash each of the four paling fences. He survived:001_smile: I remember thinking that there has to be a better way of doing this!
  19. " horses for courses" having a well stocked tool box!! is a must in this industry. As i said i carry both ....the short ones i use most of the time but they will kick out on thick (lose) barked tree then i change to the long gaffs. And yes the long ones feel like your balancing on nothing ( like wearing high heels for the first time?) especially on the smaller diameter stuff. Some Eucs start out thick barked and go down to smooth ...so some times i get the spikes sent up to me.Or put up with some slipping and kicking out till i get high enough.
  20. " Hard on the Gear":scared1: No one else uses my gear!!! Unless i am there watching ! Ie trying something out. I may be an employee but it is all MY gear.
  21. Get a set of spikes where you can change the actual "spike" length i have a 2 sets one smaller length spike for smooth bark and smaller diameter trees and the other longer spikes for thick bark trees. It is amazing the difference the smaller length spikes make in small stuff. Oh... and get as as light weight and strong as you can ...mine are titanium i think. Hope that helps. Ps forget the crampons:thumbdown:
  22. Never turn down work ......but i have put some extremely ridiculous prices on jobs. So in effect i have turned down work on trees that i thought should not be removed. That was when i owned my own business. That was my choice. Usually some one came in and did the job. Now as an employee i have some input but it is ultimatly the customers and the boss's decision. We have some vague Heritage Listing of trees but no TPO's in Tassie. At the end of the day a lot of my work is removals a lot because of poor species selection many numbers of years ago. I"d rather remove than lop (top) a tree. In any business looking after the customer is the main game and looking after trees our trade so getting that balance right will ensure ongoing success.
