  1. Would accept that a tree infected with K. deusta is a tree is infected with a pathogen?
  2. I'd say the big G but they could be F.
  3. Anyone here competing? I'm thinking of entering this comp next year - never done poleclimbing, how would I get into it and what equipment is needed?
  4. It's strength lies in the fact it is multiple choice, this allows people who have a good knowledge of arboriculture but maybe dont have the required skills in written english to gain a qualification which displays their knowledge to potential employers or clients.
  5. What the lowest price in the UK for 25 litres of Husky mineral oil? How does £44.00 sound to people here?
  6. At this time, I think the Arb industry as a whole has little or no interest in the report and it's potential guidance. Mainly due to the fact that we are all out there trying to earn a living and documents and reports like this only serve to remind us how we are constantly being lectured to from people who have never done a days work in the industry so have very little understanding of what is involved in practical day to day tree management. On a practical level - I think VTA is the way forward for tree safety, the Arboricultural Association should be pushing the importance of VTA and producing their own guidance for land owners/managers with funds directly from the Forestry Commission.
  7. There are about 4 people contributing to this thread, why do you think that is?
  8. Also worked on a project that required climbing bat inspections with endoscopes, pretty sure the guys doing it were making very good money. Where's there's bats and trees - there's money.
  9. In January 2010 a BBC investigation revealed that Buckfast was mentioned in 5,638 crime reports in the Strathclyde area of Scotland from 2006–2009, equating to three a day on average. One in 10 of those offences was violent and the bottle was used as a weapon 114 times
  10. You guys got chavs we got neds, you need chavs and neds to show your kids what not to be like - [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scNLfr1EP08]YouTube - NEDS Kru ft. The Wee Man[/ame]
  11. The internet is so big, so powerful and pointless that for some people it is a complete substitute for life.
  12. Both of them came out of that looking stupid, Stewart for bringing up the 'hands in pocket' thing in the first place and Corden for failing to show any real wit or genuine comic timing with his pathetic attempt at trying to outdo Stewart. The simple fact is Corden is a talentless imbecile with little or no redeeming qualities.
  13. Thought I'd wait and see about the Eucs when I first saw this thread. Have now seen around 20 small to medium sized Eucalytus gunni showing signs of dying back in the greater Glasgow area, have had customers calling me to come and take a look and give my opinion. The die-back is typical of everyone's description in this thread, brown necrotic leaves. Should these trees definitely be removed? Do we know for sure they wont regenerate? Some of the trees I've seen are major focal points in gardens and most of them haven't become hazardous yet. Should we as an industry wait and see before removing these trees?
  14. What if that baby owl was a baby crow or another excellent animal like a Magpie would you have stopped the work? .
  15. meant gun crime, Cumbria in general is not known for shootings unlike London Manchester and Glasgow...whose forces are regularly dealing with shootings and armed crime.
  16. Dean, I think you'll find it's 'spelled wrong' The Cumbrian police probably never even had a training scenario for this kind of incident, unlike say the Metropolitan, Manchester or Strathclyde forces who regularly train for incidents like this. Maybe there is now a need to have four forces in the UK for each country, instead of regional forces?
  17. Thought it said in the vid you used 12-16mm Sirius? must've been mistaken. Anyway, at 2.37, what sling/setup is being used? interested to know as soon be time to renew a couple of our Yale rigging ropes, may consider buying teufelberger, what is the red and white rope and how does it differ from the blue one? glad to hear it Nice PDf, easy to follow and understand. Is there a danger that by creating rigging blocks with even higher Working Load Limits than the ones currently used - you are encouraging people to rig increasingly heavier sections of timber when as an industry we should be encouraging the opposite as the structural strength of the tree is largely an unknown factor? shouldn't we be trying to minimise the risk of tree failure during rigging operations? What are your thoughts on this issue?
  18. Mark, the blocks look great, looks like a lot of work and ideas have gone into them, good luck with them questions - price? at 2.25, if the rigging line had failed for whatever reason - would the adjacent tree with the climber have taken a massive shockload? much larger than the 'block' tree? was the experiment as safe as it could be? was there any real need to have climber in that tree other than for filming reasons? What is the working load limit of 12mm Sirius 500? Does Ian Mackaye know you used that song? he's a pretty laidback person on issues like that but its always nice to ask. Dischord threatened to sue X-Games for copying the front cover of Minor Threat's first album unless X Games withdrew all the promo posters etc? Treemagineers? Trees Imagination Engineering Just wondered what courses you guys have done in engineering? as I'd like to look into getting a basic grounding in the subject maybe at HNC level cheers Tim
  19. Excellent work, looked like a nice place to work. What cord are you using with the Fly?
  20. Not necessarily Dean, the same thing can happen when you have a straight main stem but with a crown that is heavily weighted in the direction of fell. This creates the same effect as a heavy leaner. Another situation where it could happen would be a straight tree with a winch or pull line under tension in the direction of fell, similar to the first tree in Daniel Murphy's vid
  21. People have died attempting bore and release cuts when climbing, the stem can barberchair in reverse down the stem then as it splits away the top breaks out and the climber gets flipped off with the top. This can happen before the release cut is made, it can happen half way through the bore cut.
  22. That first cut is not only extremely dangerous but downright stupid. The risk of reverse barber chairing is huge, the tree had been roped and the crown weighted over the garden, there is high tension in the fibres where he makes that ridiculous low back cut. There was no need to make a plunge cut, boring and plunge cuts in that situation will lead to severe crushing injuries or death, can't believe the guy actually posted this trash. Word to any trainee or inexperienced arborist - do not use that technique.
  23. like this -
  24. In theory yes, but its dangerous to talk about rigging simply in terms of engineering principles. Engineers dont do treework, we do and its our knowledge of the tree and it's condition combined with our knowledge of forces, angles and distances that really counts.
