  1. LOL...what do they reckon (whoever they are...?) Fungi are closer the animal kingdom than the plants? Its a little bit of an animal!
  2. Anthocyanins. Anthocyanin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  3. Anthocyanins.... Anthocyanin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  4. Im keen to do BB. Never seen it!
  5. No matter...I deleted the reference anyway! Yeah///more forays!
  6. Good.Glad to see that image aswell. I saw more foliage than was actually there in Davids post but feel vindicated on seeing this one.
  7. Not my reference mate.....!
  8. Fomitopsis pinicola is aka Fomes pinicola. Its not hard to see why.... Fomitopsis pinicola - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia File:Fomitopsis pinicola 2.JPG - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia File:Fomitopsis pinicola 3.JPG - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia err...yeah! prefers conifer to deciduous. Apparently.
  9. Completely mullered...Nice shots! Not seen the chicken have it's way so completely before...unlike Fistulina.( Which I have seen ) There was never any chance this tree could compete . Actually...maybe once seen this degree of destruction-impressive! Were there no other agents present and active?
  10. You bid clutz David!! I was just reading your posts guys.....I am not much help here but, as Tony thrust a mushroom under my nose from the boot of his car, exclaiming the strong odour of iodine was unmistakeable, I have to say, I didn't find the smell atall strong....And this from a a recently revived ol' factory resurrection! ( given up smokin'see...nag nag, wink etc ) Anyhoo, didn't think the smell of aniseed was so strong myself...infact, markedly indistinctive!
  11. "is the tree protection absolutely sacrosanct for normal foundations" As a general rule, the RPA ( Root Protection Area) is calculated as you have described. Most professional arborists will recognise that rooting architecture can, and is affected by factors that lead to an area populated by roots quite different to a circle originating at the stem and with a fixed radius. You could try trial pits within the proposed construction zone to determine the extent of the rooting architecture within your proposed build- (You will need permission as it is TPO'd) It may of course not be necessary if there is an obvious history that describes the root distribution. ( eg walls, drains, etc) HTH
  12. "There is currently a garage 5m from the tree which I propose to remove...." What , if anything has the consultant made of the garage in respect the tree's "decline" ? Also, with respect the proposed improvement to the tree's rpa by the removal of the garage currently in situ? BTW...140 yrs for a Monterey seems a bit slim!
  13. "If I replan the extension, is the tree protection absolutely sacrosanct for normal foundations - i.e. building 12.5m from the tree? I am aware of overcoming issues by using mini piled foundations with ventilation for the roots but dont know whether council tree officers have flexible foresight? " Have faith mate...Planning are duty bound to consider the proposal...failure to do so would lead to a challenge imo. As for BS5837, the classification of trees is both the weakness and great strength of the standard. I am not atall surprised to learn of a difference of opinion. Your consultant needs to argue more effectively by having as specific evidence as he can obtain with regards the trees SULE and amenity value. If you challenge now, you waste the lesson learned with regards to "perceived" value of the tree ( I haven't seen it). Redress this issue in design and you stand a better chance of both Planning Permission, and/or a successful challenge. Get a second opinion about the tree's value if you are seriously miffed at this decision.
  14. Dunno mate...reckon you are well placed to move into tree services given the nature of your current trading....Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Personally, I wouldn';t dream of hiring out my chipper! It will quickly never be the same again...and you will need to chase maintaining it and sharpening it and turning it out with light boards complete etc (costing you plenty) Ever heard the expression that the fastest cars are hire cars? Tim
  15. The beetles are really very mobile already as they fly. Infact, the point was made during the program about those "taller" stature specimens getting infected first as they are in the flight path more directly.... I would think that the spikes could well spread infection but why would you use spikes unless removing a tree? And if you are removing, this cos it;s infected but anyway...doesn't much matter eh! Last point...I seem to recall that it was said the timber was to be temporarily stored until sufficient volume was amassed for a burn..... OK...last point. I was surprised to see the stem just dropped onto the tarmacadam, across kerbs and so on...Had a piece shattered away and flung itself across the road, who knows?
  16. Original & Best !
  17. Hey man...if I can quit, you can also! It really is all in your head. I read Allan Carrs "Easy way to stop Smokin'"...So many people say its crap. It worked for me ! Mind you...I have tried umpteen times to quit. If its in your heart to quit, you wont really notice when you do!
  18. First stiff breeze when the ground's wet and they'll all fall about laughing....
  19. Dean..please! Change the tune. Meripilus is not NECESSARILY terminal..at least no more terminal than life as a whole, ending as it does with all things returning to the dirt. It is not tree care if you do not make the situation known to the client.....It's the client's tree afterall- and their money!
  20. Great set David.... This is gonna seem a bit nerdy but I am finding two spellings for Laccaria.... 1) amethystea 2)amethystina
  21. Interesting post...I did a track day at Cadwell Park last week, the first time Ive visited Cadwell. They have some good trees there also. I spent the night in my tent amongst a group of beech...some which were significantly decayed and hollowed out! (This I noticed the next morning) Sodding windy too as it happened....! Nice to see them retained amongst human designs-
  22. Particularly impressed by the mychorhizal attendance! Reinforced for me by the boletes and the obvious associations with species.....(Oh how I love my boxes- bad plan where mycology is concerned! )
  23. Ok...I will hope to get at least one right but the coloured shroom is I think a deceiver..Amethyst deceiver Laccaria amethystea The mazegill...would help to be reminded what you found it on! thats some awesome macro stuff there Yes it is...the Perreny is as surreal an image as I can focus on!
  24. Eh..Ditto! It was an experience well worth the effort and all the more memorable for the enthusiasm and infectious excitement that led the proceedings.
