  1. But you have done at some time in your career! And it's not wrong! If we all work to best practice safely and erganomicaly there will still be times when we may need to work outside what is the expected norm, poor work position, slippy conditions long reach reductions etc etc. The question is can you justify why you worked in that fashion? Our industry is not black and white. There is however a stark difference between poor work practices and justified methods to achieve outcome safely. For example a long reach reduction using one hand for support and one hand to cut!! Or should/could you have used a silky?? Justify!
  2. Why would anyone want more restrictive licensing in place? And what will it change? We already have best practice, why not simply apply best practice in your day to day work:001_rolleyes: I write this as a hypocrite and here lies the problem!!!
  3. Make of this as you will!!!! I believe these guys are FISA instructors! I will keep my thoughts to myself. http://hwtraining.co.uk/new-forestry-fast-track-course/

  11. wheel barrow it is then Right next thread:- Yard man wanted
  12. I started in the forest at 16 and in my time I saw more lads come and go including plumbers and joiners all wanting a taste, the truth is you have to be a different breed of man to stick it out both financially and physically. You could say its a life style thing! I see lads today coming up and the most disturbing thing is that most dont have the aptitude to work in forestry or arbwork. I also believe that the only place to learn the industry is in the workplace nose to the grindstone that goes for both sides of our industry its seems more important today to have the right boots or the right pair of trousers than a pride in your days work for a poor wage but happy to go to work the next day, its turned into a fashion parade. Out with the pfanners and back with the high heels, bras and suspendies pressing flowers and scones for tea sorry nostalgia got me there for a minute:blushing: oh i do tree work now in me pfanners and petzl helmet the money was crap in forestry:lol:
  13. im not to worried about that, i can surface the yard to suit. Im more torn between which machine will be most flexible, moving timber, loading chip/logs etc. do i buy a machine i can take on jobs such a mini skid steer or a machine thats stops in the yard im ready to buy but cant decide ive even considered a botex trailer to make use of the timber crane:confused1:
  14. im thinking bobcat, mini skid steer, tractor with a loader
  15. Im looking for a new yard machine but cant decide, whats your most usefull yard machine? I have a tractor for running the splitter but was looking for another machine for moving logs and yard duties etc. Cheers Dave
  16. Norway spruce (picea abies) or Norway spruce fir:confused1:
  17. Helle fire:thumbup:
  18. Yes. I have a similar one never had any issues. Not as efficient as gated snatch block when using as an offset tho.
  19. You didn't buy me an egg ya tight git:thumbdown: and you haven't given me a definitive answer. Typical NPTC ASSessor!! If you can't do, teach and if you can't teach, ASSess:thumbup:
  20. So Mr P can you clarify for me, can I dismantle a tree? And does cs31 allow me to fell trees? oh and does cs30 allow me to sharpen:confused1: it's a mystery
  21. So if you use your 6 ton winch and 8 ton SWL snatch block to LIFT a 6 ton object you will have knowingly exceed your SWL. ( The snatch block could be experiencing 12 ton ) But if you use your 6 ton winch and 8 ton SWL snatch block to SKID a 1 ton piece of timber you have not exceeded your SWL. Yes you will have to overcome inertia / friction ect but you can be confident that the timber will move and in doing so will not exert a force on the snatch block that is great than the SWL. So if I was going to use the above set up I would make sure I didn’t try and move timber that was too heavy I totally agree with what you say and have no issue with that. However you would have a winch setup that could potentially overload the block, and when whole tree skidding that is all too easy to do and believe me a six ton cable in face hurts I've got the good looks to prove it:blushing: There are many on here that may not fully understand physics! So to maintain industry best practice 6ton winch = 12ton snatch block = 12ton+ Strop or choker.
  22. Do we both agree that a 12 ton block is required?
  23. This is what I said! However the winch is still only delivering 6ton given its a six ton winch and not a 12 ton winch, doubling back to the winch will allow you to pull 12 ton however the clutch on the winch will fail if the winch exceeds 6ton of pull:thumbup:
