  1. Nice work. At least you didn't call them fern trees.
  2. So when I started out 14 years ago, people didn't get "quotes" you just looked at the job, gave them a price and they said "great, when can you do it?" I have often said that if I had known then what I know now I would have made a fortune. Sadly I hadn't a clue and so I didn't. Still, 8 years after the crash the figures seem to be heading in the right direction, employment up, inflation down, wages rising etc.. so I wonder how you are finding it? are the good times about to roll again?
  3. Can't believe a man of your talents hasn't posted a video before. Nice one!
  4. Too many college kids slamming the thing on while the chain is running, thats what breaks them. Yes it should be tested now and again and yes it should be clean, but its a safety feature designed to stop the chain in a kickback, not so that you can bang it on at full revs after every branch you cut. Just because thats what the instructor at college says don't make it right.
  5. I have a 10x5 tipper for that reason, the 12x6 is just too big to get in to a lot of driveways for uplifts and log deliveries. The other thing is that with the high sides on you can fill a 10x5 to the brim with logs or timber and still be legal weight wise, you can't do that with the 12x6..... The 10x5 holds 5 cube BTW.
  6. If Kretzshmaria was noted 5 year ago that tree should have come down soon after. K. deusta causes a particularly intense white rot in lime, any surveyor worth his salt would know that. Other species could be perhaps retained for a little while with some reduction work perhaps but not lime. I have felled a fair few limes with Kretz that were like polystyrene inside. It is also worth noting that the Highways Authority have the power to force land owners to remove trees which they deem dangerous, so perhaps some blame lies with the roads department for not enforcing this. My advice would be to place all the evidence that you have in the hands of a good Arboricultural Consultant and a good Lawyer. Initial consultations would not be prohibitively expensive, and they you would know if you had a case...
  7. Thanks for the comments. The serial numbers are up on Arbsafe....
  8. Seen em that wide but never that tall. Impressive.
  9. They also got a Stihl BR600 blower, an stihl HS 82R, and an HS 86T. Plus the cops have 3 more saws for forensics to look at! So we are seriously short of saws!
  10. Neighbours disturbed thieves at our yard tonight at 11:00, they left in a hurry having broken into 2 neighbours cars and my van, they left 3 saws on the verge and took the ones listed above, the 357 is a spud ported special with a sugi bar, the 385 has extra dogs and a 28" bar. I'll be updating the serial numbers on arbsafe tomorrow... Keep your eyes peeled on ebay / gumtree etc.. They were driving a volvo saloon BTW..
  11. I have an ox yolk that we bought at a french market one year, its beech. Whoever said rhododendron isn't working hard enough. Holm oak, hornbeam ands oak all seem pretty heavy to me, but so does fresh whitebeam...
  12. I think those who don't flout the rules a little are very few and far between, I know that in the past I have paid tradesmen in cash to avoid the VAT, and at work I have been asked to take cash countless times. That said I have only ever accepted small amounts, and I'm happy to admit that on here. There are many out there who do everything in cash and that is wrong, we all pay in to the system so that we can get something out, having had 3 kids in NHS hospitals I can appreciate the need to keep the system going. The tax man knows that many many people dodge a little tax, but he also knows that its small amounts and that the real tax dodgers are the ones who don't pay any. Some one who knows once told me that if all the rich tax evaders paid all they were due that the basic rate of income tax could be cut to 15%, that is some serious money. However if the rest of us paid all the tax we were due it could be cut to 9%. Thats what paying the window cleaner in cash means, the grey economy is huge in this country, but not as big as it is in italy or many other places. Tax Research UK Why £40 billion of tax evasion in the shadow economy matters
  13. It has worked fine, no reliability problems till it got rolled on the motorway recently. Its now getting rebuilt as a tipper. I have a remap on my other landy, a 2.2 tdci, which works well but is on its second engine!
  14. Brilliant stuff, I made a moulded cheek piece for my rifle..
  15. You're a special case Andy, veg juice sounds ideal for you. Still a lot of carbs in root veg too, A carrot has about the same as an orange or apple, its just more starchy. But starch is broken down into sugar by an enzyme in your saliva, so its sugar by the time you digest it.. Not saying its a bad thing, just watch out as you may end up taking a lot more calories than you think. Celery and kale and stuff like that is a different matter, but these are full of fibre that you are missing out on. Its like the guys who say paleo doesn't work, but they're eating 10 eggs and a kilo of meat every day..... Everything in moderation..
  16. Not being a kill joy, I like a juice myself, but its worth remembering that by juicing stuff you are throwing away all the fibre and concentrating the sugars to the point that some juices contain more than full fat coke! You wouldn't sit down and eat 5 oranges, but you could easily juice and drink them. Do some googling and you might find that you are eating way more sugars than you think. Fibre protects you from bowel cancer and the latest evidence suggests it may slow down fat absorption too. So the healthy option may be just eat the veg and the fruit whole and have less of it. Having said that some of the recipes in this thread sound delicious, especially the lemon and ginger, I fancy adding a shot of vodka to that one, I reckon it would be a winner!
  17. Lets see some pictures of good spots around the country.... I took a walk along the cliffs today at Siccar Point, it was certainly bracing... Hutton's unconformity, where vertical greywacke is overtopped by horizontal strata of red sandstone. This led James Hutton to believe that it must have taken a long time for the vertical rocks to be eroded and then submerged and the sandstone deposited, much longer than the 4000 years suggested by the bible. And so geology was born....
  18. I can't remember the number, it was chipped to 210HP.. It could take a 12" log without kicking in the stress control, my 6400 can just about do an 8" log.
  19. You could try a hard reset: disconnect the battery and touch the + and - leads together for 20 seconds or so, this will drain any capacitors in the system and might turn off the light....
  20. I might try and get another team out this year, but we'll have to see what happens, I have had a lot of landscaping work recently so maybe we'll head in that direction.....
  21. You do need a good powerful discharge to go horizontal over the cab, also try any get a nice compact chipper thats not too heavy. I believe that Shleising do a turntable pto machine which would be ideal for domestic work...
  22. Given that most alpines seem to have a land drive PTO, I think it shouldn't be too hard to make a driven axle trailer, either with a crane or with the crane mounted behind the seat on the tractor.
  23. If you are going to have any problems Eddie it will be to do with using the tractor as a transporter rather than as a machine, not because it is unsafe or too large, as it seems quite clear that there are many larger agricultural implements being carried on the front. I think if VOSA stop you their concern will be that you are transporting goods ( the digger ) this will be the same wether its on a trailer or front mounted however. it seems that if the implement attached to the tractor is used by the tractor then its ok to transport it, but if its a separate machine then its not ok. That said there are plenty of drainage contractors round here towing 360's behind fast tracs etc...
