  1. Don't know much about flat rate but i'd say just register for the full rate. I did last year and I'm snowed under with work, I was worried that I might loose jobs but it has'nt really happened. plus i was able to claim back over £7000 in vat that i had paid out on equipment in the previous three years. you can also claim fees and services for the last six months. As to the VAT you charge this goes on top of your norml rate so you get a 17.5% discount on everything that you buy but you still make the same money. One more tip; work out the VAT before giving a customer the price, then if they baulk at it you can say "that includes the VAT" which seems like a better deal than saying its £xxx +VAT.
  2. Look like limpets to me, was it by the sea?
  3. Good job, Its nice to see a proper reduction, it seems so many just don't know how.
  4. Dont know about you guys but i've been contacted twice by debt collection companies offering to collect debts free of charge ( they make their money from the client). Might be worth getting someone else to do the legwork. Another point is that some people say "i've gone bankrupt" without actually properly declaring. You should check this out as judjing by some of the replies in this thread it works. Personally I would'nt walk away from a tenner, but then i'm a Yorkshire man raised in Scotland.
  5. One of last week's jobs. Sorry for the dark pics, mobile phone. It took 3 days to complete, very long drag across lawn, big rings had to be quatered and barrowed. About 12 ton in all i think, luckily the neighbour took some logs.
  6. Really like the look of that iveco but £35000 is a bit steep. especially when you can get a LR 130 chassis cab for 20k.
  7. There's somethin like this sitting in my dads yard, i'll ask if he's willing to sell it.

    Full Chisel?

Thanks for the replies,I thought I'd get a mixed response. I think i'll get a few Full Chisels as well as my Semis for when i'm cutting clean stuff.
  9. Was working with a friend today, his saws had a full chisel/softwood chain and i noticed that they cut better than my semi chisel chains. However we were cutting up a big sycamore, and hit some wire when felling the bole, the full chisel was seriously dammaged so i tried with my semi chisel a bit lower down but hit wire as well, the difference was the dammage was minimal compared with the full chisel. I only use the semi because thats what my dealer sells, should I change? What do you guys use?
  10. We hied something like this years ago, 9Hp i think. It was crap, It was just not heavy enough so tended to bounce around rather than dig in. You should be able to get a second hand wheelbarow type self propelled18Hp + for 2-2.5k. This WILL pay for itself in no time.

    110 300 tdi

I'm about to sell my 110 2.8 tgv, its based on the 300 tdi and has no electrics, its a hard top though, i have built a full height bulkhead behind the seats but it can still hold rakes and brushes etc. Its a good motor which has been a reliable servant for four years, I was planning to mot it (due now )and sort out a few niggly little things before selling for maybe £3500 however if you can give me hard cash now i'll take £2900 as it is. My cash flow is desperate just now and i have to pay for my new landy which arrives next week.
  12. For me chipper size has nothing to do with branch diameter. Its all about snapping forks, i keep everything above 4" for logs but i have an 8" chipper because it can snap big forks and has a wide appeture so you dont spend ages cutting bits up just so you can get them through a small chipper. I started with a 6" and i certainly would'nt go smaller than that. Remember time is money.

    big saws

Climbing Saw:Stihl Midrange Saw: Husky Big Saw: Stihl The only way.
  14. I'd recommend the Borders of course but theres not as much to to do for the kids round here however I love Perthshire, there's great scenery lots of hotels and touristy stuff like the see through salmon ladder at Pitlochry. Theres also the Hermitage at Dunkeld where there are lots of big firs including one douglas as 212 foot, pretty impresssive. Also Perthshire is close enough to Edinburgh to visit it in one day and be back in the city for dinner.
  15. I'm building a shed in my yard this year, including planning its going to cost about £2500, thats for 18 x 6M. I hadn't realised how much these things cost to rent. Why not rent a bit of ground long term and then build a shed on it in such a way that it could be taken down and moved if necessary.
  16. I am looking for a Groundworker to work Full or part time in S.E. Scotand. Ideally someone with Basic Chainsaw, but I'll consider anyone if they are keen enough. The yard is in Berwickshire so anyone in E Lothian or Berwickshire / N Northumberland would be ideal. Please send PM or call 07801 538 717 if interested. Many Thanks.
  17. I registered for vat last year, because i had to. I was expecting to loose work as much of my work is still domestic, however i have found that I loose the odd job but hardly any really, I gain on the bigger jobs because if you quote for big jobs and are not registered you look like a small company who is perhaps not up to the job. At the end of the day people expect to pay vat and i havent looked back, as has already been said its the customer that pays the vat not you and you get 17.5% off everything including diesel; 88p per litre... nice.
  18. I broke 2 lines in one go last year , BT sent me the bill no problem. Maybe its because I phoned them rather than the client. I often take lines down and put them back up afterwards. One thing worth noting, if the pole is not on private land BT will take them down for free, however be prepared to spend half the day waiting for them to turn up.
  19. I've asked my dealer to get me some when it arrives, iits supposed to be like the fly which I was very impressed with. I dont think you can get fly anymore in the uk.
  20. Me too. Top handles are way safer in a tree, I can't see why they would want to ban them. Its only when you use them on the ground that they become dangerous. I know three people with scars on their left forearms from using 020's on the ground.
  21. My first rope was XTC and its worn a lot better than the new england HI vee that i got a couple of years ago. The main thing is look after it.
  22. I always take my wire core strop up whatever i'm doing, its very soft so behaves like a normal lanyard, my harnes is modified so i can hang in my strop. I do climb on both ends occasionaly, although to comply with HSE guidelines the loop formed when doing this must never leave the ground, it often does.
  23. Not suitable for climbing on its own, new england have a new low stretch rope coming out, and there are others on the market. To be honest though you only notice the stretch on big trees anyway.

    trampoline

Did something similar while working in my dads garden a few weeks ago, dropped one stem on a wall he'd just built, no dammage fortunately, but felling Leylandii with a lot of weight on one side is something i no longer do. Had two lucky escapes with it now. I've bust a window with the grinder too, not on the same day though.
  25. A friend of mine is an NPTC instructor, he's talking about doing something like this in Scotland, ill post details if it comes off.
