Does anyone know if there's a decent straight 6 diesel engine that is a fairly straight forward swap to go into a defender? Like the idea of the old 3.2 patrol engine but you try and find one now! For motivation just have a listen to this bad boy [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwqGaVU8Vug]YouTube - cummins land rover[/ame] I'm still in the process of very slowly rebuilding my old 110 and have changed my mind about engines at least twice so far - was going to V8 it (then bought a V8 disco instead), then decided to 200tdi it but trying to find a decent 200 engine now is getting a bit harder as their all either shagged or have found their way into the older landies. GMC v8 diesel would have been nice but would eat gearboxes. There's no front end or bulkhead on it at the mo so making something fit isn't going to be too much of a problem.

I agree. They all seem pretty poor - I started out with Natwest but they were useless (primarily the staff in that prticular branch) and then I swapped to HBOS - seemed to make less mistakes but because it was running through a Halifax branch and not an actual bank of Scotland, all I could do was pay money in there - anything else I had to speak to a call centre during office hours - not impressed. Speak to a few and play them off against each other until you get a good deal and then swap when the deal runs out.

Yep, that's how i'd understood it - just that finding a vehicle light enough is the hard bit. We've been having right bother with Vosa over this sort of thing - it seems to depend on who you talk to there as to what you can/can't do Unless we're within a 50 k radius of the yard, we can't tow anything at all behind our transit because it's 3.5tonne gvw and to do that we had to have a tacho exemption - to put a tacho in is something like £900 or so - already had one Vosa prohibition notice - was 400 miles away from the yard and they thought they were being nice by gibving us an exclusion which let us drive directly back to the yard at no more than 40mph.

yes, but the trailer and load can't be more than so many % of the weight of the vehicle (or something like that) so it's still only a little trailer

used to use this for deliveries until I got the 130. Was a pain in the ass hand balling out but you could fair load it with the processor. Never did get around to putting a tipper on the 130 but as has been said, there's nothing else pick up wise that will tow like a dfender.

We've noticed a lot more people going down the billeting route over the last year - partly on cost and partly on the size of the timber people are ending up with. For the cost of one of the basic sort of processors you can have a sawbench with an elevator and a decent sized splitter and deal with stuff much bigger than you could with a processor.

We used to be able to get it fro free if we loaded our selves or a whopping £1 if they used the forklift - that was only a couple of years ago too. Last I heard the estate had bought it's own chipper and were trying to geti nto biomass

Tried it once when I was waiting for a set of belts for my saw - it's doable but a proper PITA as they try to bounce about or roll off the stack

A short bar, bigger sprocket and full chisel chain - what a thing for discing up with

If you can, try and get the TCT blade cheap too - I got about a year out of mine before it wanted a sharpen. If you're billeting, you'll find the corkscrew on the end an absolute bonus for any of those bits that are just a touch too big.

Yep, and then after a while they start reducing the overdraft if it looks like you're using it - they charge you for putting money in, charge you for taking it out and charge you when you run out
