  1. Kipperfeets plan sounds good. Lets make the most of the day for those that can get there early.
  2. Can someone bring a bag of dry logs? The chap said they were'nt included and it would cause the locals to roll about laughing if an army of tree surgeons had to buy some!
  3. Haven't thought about Cyprus. Quad hire and mountains sound like a good idea
  4. I'm going to look for a holiday for the new year. I'm after nice warm weather, interesting geography and scenary and not too expensive. Was thinking of one of the canary Islands and maybe self catering away from the main british resorts. Any ideas or recommendations?
  5. I joked with my girlfriend that we're having a hoedown and she took me serious thinking it was what it sounds like!! Bring a sleeping bag + something like a camping mat unless you don't mind being on a hard floor. Its just like camping but indoors from what I can gather. I'll get some information about food from the local pubs because I think it would be a bit much cooking on two hot plates for 15 brutal appetites.
  6. Hurst Green Camping Barn > Hill Lane Camping And Caravanning Sites Tel: 01254 826304 - Greengore Farm, Hill Lane, Hurst Green, Clitheroe, Lancashire, BB7 9QT Should be good
  7. He also said it doesn't matter if there is one or two extra turn up - it just comfortably sleeps 12
  8. Ok its booked for the 20th. We pay in cash when we meet the man. You can arrive anytime but I'll probably be there in the early afternoon. He did mention that the barn is next to a holiday cottage that he also rents out and that will be occupied on the 20th so he asked to bear them in mind if the noise level starts to pick up! If this is a problem I can book another date but I reckon we just paint the town red then head back to the barn and gag the big gobs!
  9. I've just come off the phone about this and it is available for the 13th and 20th. It's £65 for the night and it has a wood burner, dining table, two electric hotplates and sleeping area upstairs. He said its about a mile from the village of Hurst green and there is a short cut through some woods that makes it a 15 min walk. Thoughts?
  10. I'll ring the Hurst Green camping barn tomorrow. I'll get a price then update this post. Is there a date in mind in case they ask when?
  11. Oh right. I wikipedia'd saphrophyte and it says the term is now considered obsolete!
  12. Nice one Monkeyd thanks for the info. I'm going to keep looking out and trying to learn more. What do we mean by saprophytic? I've heard it before but not sure what it means.
  13. There's a camping barn in Hurst Green near Stonyhurst college in lancashire. I don't know how many can sleep there but the idea is you just bring a sleeping bag, no need for tent. There's a couple of nice pubs there, which do grub also. I could look into it if folk are interested
  14. I saw this on a mature beech and wondered if my ID was correct. Unfortunately I didn't scratch the fruiting body to see if it bruised red. The fungi seemed to be associated with bark and decayed wood on an old wound and in a cavity at the base.
  15. Perhaps, but why bother when there's nearly always twigs on the ground, ready to use?
  16. There are so many types of gloves, you are bound to find a pair that will be to your liking
  17. When cutting a large stump flush, place twigs in the cut - as you would with wedges. It doesn't matter if the twigs get damaged and if there are enough in there it will stop your saw getting trapped. Done properly you can cut all the way through without taking the saw out.
  18. Don't bother with it and certainly don't pay £70. I paid £50 but they are cheaper than that now. The phone itself is beyond basic and it has a week point - the screen. Mine caved in after a few weeks and rendered useless. I've heard it had all sorts done to it in tests against the JCB but I don't know how it managed to be that good. Cheap phones are the way forward and don't have on your person if you can help it.
  19. Maybe I'm missing something here but surely there is no choice for the employer but to provide helmets that conform to BS12492 for their climbers. First of all they are more fit for purpose as Jonsie defined in the standard description. We have to wear all round leg protection on our chainsaw pants when climbing so why is this any different? I agree that employers might not know which is why I previously asked the question - how do we get to know? Do changes in british standard requirements just trickle out through publications over time or do the HSE or other bodies have a strategy for getting the information through all levels?
  20. You are right Marc, they are very difficult to reduce and you've done a fine job of it. Perhaps the thing I am criticizing here is the job specs we have to hand and apply to all trees. Some trees are easier than others to reduce and some look better for it but I reckon its nearly impossible to do a reduction on a pop like this and still make cuts to british standard. What you've done looks to be as near as it can get
  21. When the guy pulls to show how the hitchclimber setup will advance the schwabish, it looks like there is too much pulling before it advances. I know you can use different lengths of friction cord etc but I always find this is the problem when setting up a self tending system and I always revert back to advancing the hitch manually. Perhaps I've not had enough gear to play around with!
  22. Thinking on the same lines as me there Dean
