  1. haha!, it would be handy to carry my climbing kit to the bottom of the tree!
  2. something that shocked me on the HSE site was the following; 'The odds of someone in forestry and arboriculture sustaining a fatal or major injury in any one yer are estimated to be worse than 1 in 120.' 'Major injuries include; fracture other than to fingers, thumbs or toes; amputation; dislocation of shoulder, hip, knee or spine; any other injury requiring admittance to hospital for more than 24 hours' 'Labour force survey indicates under-reporting of non-fatal accidents to be 75% for employees and at at least 90% for self-employed workers' HSE treework accidents Not good reading really is it!
  3. 'Am I a REAL Polar bear?' 'of course you are, why?' 'Cos its f****** freezing out here!'
  4. I used to charge more when the clocks went back. I used to spread the cost of the 'lost' hour over the other 6 hours of 'cutting time'.
  5. Thats shocking, we're you mauled by a Gerbil?
  6. I used to use ex-Army issue goretex, I recently picked up some Royal Navy stuff which is much better (better zips, pockets etc). The other big advantange is that its not DPM but blue - a bit more visible. I paid £28 for jacket and £15 for the trousers, I've been dry as a bone the last few weeks...I call that money well spent!
  7. Lovely work monkeyd!. I'll be interested to see how the tree responds to this prune after a seasons growth. Have you though about thinning out crowns like this using NFP to reduce sail whilst reducing the number of cuts (which will result in a flush of growth from the pruning cuts?).
  8. fluffy bunny - you and me both mate!, a small shell dressing does the trick and fits in the pocket nicely. Does anybody REALLY stop and put a plaster on up a tree?!!?
  9. Hello mate,

I run training courses down at Hockley. I can do a CS30 for you for £200-00, this includes your assessment and registration Etc, 2 day course. I would strongly recommend dealing directly with a trainer rather than go through a college from a financial point of view!

    Cheers,

  10. I use both!. I like to vary my climbing system and move any aches a pains I get fairly round my body. If I spend a day on a prussik or blakes hitch these days, I'm chinstrapped in the evening.
  11. I've used one of these. They are in no way comparable to an MS200T. They are fine for pruning fruit trees or perhaps light thinning work/pruning. Anything else and they lack the power to chase a cut thru. They are flimsy and I doubt you'd bet 6 months out of one with daily use. On the plus side..they are a bit lighter. Spend your money on the Stihl.
  12. Well fella's, we had a count up and so far we've raised £6,000. A big thankyou to all arbtalkers who chipped in for a very good cause, thanks Guys, it was worth every step! Spike
  13. excellent, pleased for you mate, this is what arbtalks all about!
  14. Just do an inboard cut....if its a big lump. I always undo my toolstrop. If in looks a bit nasty, or I'm using a big old saw, I put it on a separate tool line.
  15. well done Paul, that must be a very rewarding thing to do mate. Give me a call when you do the next one, I'd love to help out Spike
  16. Yes mate, the justgiving link will be up for about 3 months.
  17. 'blimey, this place looks like its been burgled by gorillas' 'she was so ugly, she used to work in the bakery, they used to push her face in the dough to make gorilla biscuits' 'your as thick as a whale omlette' 'about as much use as a carrying handle on a Chieftain tank' 'if your brains were made of cotton wool, there wouldnt be enough to make a tampax for a budgie'
  18. Done it!, it all went very well, we were all walking like Charlie Chaplain at the end of it though!. My 16 year old lad came with us, hoping to get through the first day and managed to do the whole 50 miles, good on him!. We got loads of encouragement from the public enroute and managed to fill 2 collection tins as we went through. A big thanks to all arbtalkers for their support!. The link is still open if anyone wants to donate http://www.justgiving.com/spike-hunter
  19. Dunno where we going yet mate, prob down the Bull then hobble around a few others, I'll try and get Sideshow Bob out for a few beers too!. Its the Southend PRA doing the walk, we've got about 20 blokes from all over going tho. I'll give Bob a ring before we get to Colly.

  20. Thanks for the support mate!

We're thinking of doing the old SAS 'long drag' selection route next year for the Afghan trust (not in the timings tho, ahem!).

    cheers

    Spike

  21. Thanks for the support so far fella's:thumbup: Its been a good few years since I've done a 50 miler, at least this time we're doing it over two days and without the shedload of kit we used to do it with!. Having a few beers with 2 Para at the end of it all too. I'll let you know how it goes.

  23. right fella's, have got the online sponsorship sorted (at last!) spike hunter is fundraising for SEESSEXPRA - JustGiving we're doing the walk on Friday, so any support will be greatfully received! Thanks Spike
  24. its a right pain in the butt mate, but I have to say its very rewarding getting a bunch of lads thru their assessments. Also, for me, its a way of staying in the tree-game, I'm 45 and still climbing 5 to 6 days a week - it ain't gonna last forever!. Keep at it mate!

  25. I'd love to help our Paul, but I'm on the lash in Holland that weekend mate. Give me a shout next time! Spike
