  1. Did you put a pea in it..or ahole in the end:001_tongue:
  2. Think you will find David...dont even take elder indoors at all:scared1:
  3. i woudnt want to fell a rowan if i had the choice. why witches cordwood?why not christians or muslims. being a wiccan my self we find it diffucult to shake off the bad Witch image. Witches are good or bad ,like christinans , sikhs ecte they can be good or bad. sorry if im ranting dont take it as a crictisim:001_smile:. Just re educating the world. good post thou.
  4. Cheers treewizard, il pass his number on to him.
  5. Thinking of Chris and wishing him improved health and a good recovery. Nasty accident, poor guy.
  6. My mate uses one, nice and light , timing goes a bit funny on it and he struggles to get spare parts for it.
  7. i think HC will decline over the years. The Guniardia fungus which kills the leaves starves the tree of enregy production and it cant make enough sugars ready for next year, so it gets weaker every year that gos by,.....dont want to see them go their lovely trees. new shoots in October..thats worrying:sad:.
  8. thats not right to do that take down the competions Ads..slagging off others dont gain you nothing.sad whoever they are.
  9. Hybrids. Sounds very much like the tree had helical growth caused by wind loading , if it was genetic then surely the whole branch structure would be the same? sorry you said there all like it..mmm.
  10. because i think the tree has been mainuplated by mans hand so to speak , which is what cultivars are , the natural programming in it will take over if mans hand is absent.yes your right the natural growth pattern is stronger , its only our tinkering that keeps the way it is..im not to sure on excatly why it happens...this is question for Tony.Sorry patchwork, dont know enough on the subject...yet.
  11. Just been reading up on that.In the wild if there is a genetic difference you dont see it for very long as the tree gets rid off slow , non productive parts i.e leaves that dont produce enough chlropyhll, its a fasinating subject. So as bundle says if dont work well enough the tree replaces it with one that does...clever tree:001_smile:.
  12. No problem Andy:001_smile:. We did cover the Cs units. But we only paid for the one assment in our course fees during the year the CS30-31. This is what i dont get though we covered the units on cross cutting , saw maintence , small tree felling , climbing but not rescue.? Think the course at Otley needs a better structure. In my veiw i think they wanted to retain last years students by giving them one assement and one CS unit i year.. so they had to come back the next year ,i may be wrong thats not gospel just a theroy.
  13. Agree with the rest, confidence in your gear , make sure its ok, lolered and fit for use. take your time on long branch walks , think what you need to do and how to get there. me saying that i still get the jitters on long branch walks or branch walks at funny upward angles.Im still getting my confiednce. just need to keep doing it and never give up.
  14. thats got me thinking Tony. Thanks. food for thought.
  15. i feel really cheated after reading all of the above..what a waste of a year!! i wish i had known more about it before i chose what college. The second years at otley are doing there areil rescue this year and not much else from what they have said. they seem to be doing work for the FC as training days. Was it like that for you Gayn?
  16. Thanks Bundle, that makes it clearer.
  17. Well im doing my best to learn what i missed, waiting to hear from trees unlimited / arborcop for the one day rescue training.
  18. Should have gone to your college!
  19. under the BTEC agenda , we learnt basic climbing , small tree felling , cross cutting and chainsaw maitence. we were only due to take cs30-31 in the first year, they did not have time to do ariel rescue. Think some of the instructors just touched on with 1/2 lads , but only breifly. There doing it this year. you would have thought a year of practical that it would have been taught , but it wasnt:bored:.
  20. Thanks Tony.....but what the eck is the above:confused1: think its goning to be a long thread then:001_tongue:
  21. Been asked to do a prune on a fagus sylvatica asplenfiolia. didnt realise they could revert back to normal European beech leaves if left un pruned. Does anyone know of any other trees/cultivars that do this?
  22. wow , very inspirational video for young climbers..thanks for posting it.
  23. i think leaflets have a place yes indeed. i designed my own on publisher got them printed by a pro, they look good proffessional. i leave at the dentists reception and they go and i get work from them. i think if they look good, designed well and marketed in the correct way..use them. dont get stuck in a box regards advertising..think outside the box. Word of mouth is the best way by far.
  24. looked at their website Jim..intresting..might give them a ring and see what they say..... Humble pie tastes of porridge with salt..yuck.( just been reading the energy post). no what your saying Andy, have taken it on board and your right..cheers mate.
