  1. point is, the exhibitors are surely there to make money out of the event?! it's a marketing and advertising tool for them.
  2. farm machinery shows like LAMMA are free in too! what are they, if not a giant walk around toy catalogue!
  3. HOW MUCH?!! after checking the website and seeing ads for the last few months and it never listing a price, I naiively thought it was free in, so i missed the other shows to go to it. Not sure I can afford it if that's the case was looking forward to camping banter
  4. depends what im doing if im honest. Mac's work in a very different way of course, or at least they used to. theyre very ram dependant rather than processor. I can be working with 32+ tracks of very high quality audio plus virtual instruments with no problem on the mac. Ive not actually tried such large scale productions on pc purely due to my external firewire 800 drive being mac formatted. Once upon a time, I used to do all file format conversions on PC as I found powerpc architecture to be slower than intel for that, as with amd vs intel, but now mac use intel, it's not an issue. I did however start out using cubase on the PC before i bought my mac which I found didnt struggle at all and that was a similar spec. If it werent for apple's logic studio and my preference for the mac edition of pro tools, I would probably be back on a pc for that too rather than trying to justify the high price once more. A large number of my colleagues have actually gone back to purpose built PC based machines. There are a few editing suites, including industry standard Pyramix which only work on PCs In short, personally, I find my mac is just excellent at what I want it to do. absolutely no doubt there, but my windows laptop is a brilliantly versatile machine on the flipside. I would say that unless you're spending a lot of time processing large amounts of audio, or video, or doing high definition graphics (the screens on mac's are awesome), your money probably goes further on a PC. Lets not forget aftersales. Apple have been very very good to me. some people have had more trouble. A successful house producer told me that he had been sold a 'slow g5' and apple wouldnt replace it, because aparently all macs are not born equal, or at least werent when the g5s came out. but say your machine does break, there are a million and one guys out there who can fix any problem on a PC almost while you wait, with an apple, your downtime increases dramatically. Something ive seen in studios causing havoc. Macs are awesome, I love mine, but Ive tried to be as detatched in my response as possible.
  5. OSX Tiger with 2gig of ram. that's the ram maxed out on a 15inch powerbook g4 (most recent model before the macbook pro) more than enough for logic, protools, etc. but it always threw a wobbler if i tried to make it do everything.
  6. I always found my mac to be super fickle. my PC laptop (just a fujitsu siemens) gets all manner of abuse, both in treatment, being used in the workshop, dusty environments etc etc, and in the amount of bits of software it gets installed on it, the amount of stuff i save off the net and get sent etc etc. and hasnt caused me one single problem. My mac very quickly became only used for music production and music production alone, internet browsing, anything resembling a game etc etc made it hellishly slow, and caused me no end of problems with the software i was using for the music
  7. theyre certainly no faster or more reliable than a good pc. and they definitely dont have the bang for your buck of a pc. I have a mac powerbook g4 because ive got a degree in music production, and when im not doing tree work im doing recording and production work... Even this could be done without a mac without much drama, it just depends on the software packages you want to use as for webdesign... I would say stick with PC macs struggle with things like wmv files which are arguably the web video yardstick.
  8. ive got both. long and short of it is... what do ya want to use it for? what specialist applications are you thinking of using? Mac's are certainly not for everyone. so many people put up with lack of compatability for the sake of fashion, there is very very little that a mac will do that a pc wont, but there are a number of things you can only easily do on a pc.
  9. open a paypal dispute?
  10. my ex tennis coach sings backing for them.
  11. Sorry to thread hijack, but to keep related information in one thread, what can anyone tell me about climbing lombardy's?? A mate of mine just up the road mentioned he wanted one of his larger specimens, to all intents and purposes topped and lopped. he wants it turning into a pole ready for a company to come in and fit a sizeable wind turbine to the top of it. I shant be doing the work myself but it got me to thinking. How does one climb a lombardy for anything other than removal? Do you even bother? How would you set a rope to a point you can trust? Obviously for removal, you would spike it. All things id like to have in the old memory banks for future reference. Most of you seem to hate them, I assume they are particularly weak?

  13. pre-2001 defenders should be in the same categories that theyre in currently. probably the 6 months 100 quid, one year 185 or whatever it is. interestingly, some very early td5s do slip through the net before the cutoff date!
  14. the other thing im worried about is we have the new IVA coming in next year (Individual vehicle approval) to replace the existing SVA. having read over the draft handbook, its very sensible actually, but I do wonder if you're not able to keep an age related plate and get a Q, whether you'll be able to dodge the big tax. Probably not
  15. I read this whole new taxation scheme was only 2001 onwards. my 1994 discovery 200tdi doesnt come under it
  16. I suppose my original point was that Ive seen it happen first hand at my first job. climber checked below, climber paused to make sure nobody was near or heading towards the drop zone, he loosed the limb, and in the time it took to fall, another groudie had walked towards and got the shock of his life. Granted not as close as this situation by a long way, but I suppose the problem of space is far compounded in road side work. I suppose what im getting at is that one person's complete diligence counts for squat if the team isnt singing from the same choir sheet?? We had a rule at my first job, every time the climber gunned his saw, all eyes instantly went upwards. Seemed to work 99% of the time Of course these are merely the ramblings of a person as green as the grass in comparison to most of you guys. Merely my observations
  17. Yeah that's fair enough, my bad, group hug Just to throw another perspective in, perhaps some blame also has to lie with the 'boss' who was also present on the ground
  18. That's certainly not how I read it! Sounds to me like he was taking every precaution and checking every drop, and it was definitely the groundie who was not paying attention. Incompetance on the part of the groundie perhaps, but to call Drella incompetent for something that wasnt his fault seems a bit steep mate perhaps in hind sight he could have whistled every time to make the other guys aware of every piece being dropped, but is not their job description to be aware?
  19. sounds like a planet!
  20. ecolojim

    Been away

That's just wrongness! although when id outgrown my massey ferguson one, at a very young age, i did take a saw to it, remove all the axles, chains and pedals and then fail to make a vapour build gokart. trouble is, my dad had zero aptitude for such things, and I was a destructive child. I suppose I still am at heart, but at least now I know how to put things together too
  21. sweet! but trainers and chaps above the ankles is a combination that just frightens me im afraid!
  22. agreed. I did think it would make life difficult if that were in the car park. I suppose if camping in the parking area is allowed, we could all meet up 'near' the site and then drive in together to guarantee being parked together. Are there any camp sites in close proximity?
  23. Is that in the car park Ben?
  24. I found my 'perfect fit' gloves from screwfix grip extremely well, and keep on gripping in the wet. Think theyre nitrile palms over cotton or cotton mix gloves if all else fails, the black ones!
