  1. Always enjoyed being in the woods and thats why i got into this job but i have to say it was after going to merrist wood and meeting guys like Ian and Jack that my real passion for trees started. Its not easy being a tree hugger and a business man as i had to condem two lovely old beeches today just because people would be the main targets. if left to thier own defices they would probably retrench, fail then re-seed and out live all us tree surgeons:thumbup:
  2. just saw alice in chains new stuff i had recorded on jools! not too sure about it i think they should have called it a day after Layne
  3. never worry sold as seen! drove my 130 from belfast to redruth and it was pissing oil, ep90 and the ujs needed a good dose of grease when i got there and i look after my baby too. tell him to dry his eyes and welcome to the fun world of landrovers
  4. tachyon hitch climber and vt, bit slippy when new but working fine now. really nice with my srt set up
  5. yea got showed that on my twts course at merrist wood. good laugh
  6. might have three large beech coming down in the near future, surveying them on sat. what town you near?
  7. nice spot for a swim, thier steak sanwich rocked! white lion was a rough spot but the owner was from over here and i got a few special perks. cricketers was good though
  8. keep a whistle round my neck and a knife on my harness. i keep the blood packs in the thigh pocket of my trousers. i had the same problem with the full kit strapped to the harness. most of it ended up on the deck. i would advise stashing blood packs on you somewhere as you just never know whats going to happen.
  9. damn! merrist wood has got expensive. cost me nothing like that in 2005. prob spent more than that though in the white lion pub, good times
  10. before and after of a small oak, thin and light reduction. the client wanted more light in her garden without butchering the tree. she was very happy with the end result. my girlfriend did all the work and i think it a good job
  11. braver man than me! considered very bad luck to cut stand alone fairy trees down over here. nice fire though the thorn would have pumped out some heat
  12. some nice cherry plum i milled today:001_smile: think it will end up as a small coffee table. will post pics if i get round to it
  13. you guys get it easy over there!!! the gippo scum bags over here knock your door in the middle of the night and put a gun in your face and ask for the keys of your wagon and lock up. i answer late calls with a loaded 12 gauge and have a 9 inch bowie under the seat of my landy. I in no way like violence and will try and talk my way out of every situation but you do get tired of not being able to sleep at night because some scum cant be bothered getting a job and see you as an easy target. i had a 66 and new blower nicked from under our noses on an estate over here and the police would not even go into the area to investigate because it might anoy some scumbags!!!!! What the hell are we ment to do
  14. noticed that myself after a good days logging! thought it was just a heat thing but it would seem i am wrong. metal box is now new tool box and the last few small jobs have paid for it, so if it blows up soon i will be getting replaced with an 026. the girlfriend still loves it and i have to admit that i am still reaching for it more than my 441!!! you do have to admit it has a sort of ugly charm and loads of grunt for a small saw
  15. if trying anything new go slow and low! had a mate who was too proud to ask how i tied the vt just because he had a few months more climbing time than me! he nearly bounced after pulling himself about thirty feet up tending his slack then having that nasty feeling of no friction! branch and warm hand saved him
  16. 104.7 kg or 16.5 stone of prime ulster beef! i choose my anchor point with great care
  17. know how you feel mate! quoted a guy 350.00 to dismantle a 70ft oak stem in his back garden and remove a 10ft fir from the front garden. he wanted no damage to the grass or bushes under the tree so every bit needed rigged. phoned him to see what day he wanted it done and he told me he had someone else coming to do it far cheaper!!!! i thought i was doing it cheap mainly because i wanted the timber for milling. this keeps up i will be out of business by christmas
  18. last place i worked used foreign workers as ground staff! they had little or no english and wore trainers and jeans. try asking one of those guys to stick the chain back on your climbing saw when your fifty foot of the deck! even has a foreign guy doing surveys with a tomograph!! he cant even tell the difference between an ash and oak
  19. the VT is the one i prefer for my climbing line. i am 16 + stone and this is one of the few hitches that does not bind on me if i am hanging in the one position for a while. it can be tweaked a bit for individual styles by putting on or taking of a wrap or braid. formy side strop i use the knut as it is a shorter hitch and gets me tighter to the stem if need be when chogging down. hope that gives you a bit of info, good luck
  20. " ellie " the landy. no signs yet due to chip box re-think!
  21. really good advice there! did my twts in winter and its tricky doing the tree id by bud and twig. collect lots of twigs from the trees round the grounds that are on the id list and get to know the feel and look of them, it helped me! its a great course and jack is a legend who you will learn a lot from. good luck
  22. lots of small outfits over here. most do great work. the bigger firms on the otherhand do some shockingly bad work and charge a fortune for the privalage. people dont seem to realise that five lorries and a load of staff does not make a good arborist.
  23. mate has used one for a while now and rates it pretty high. use the motion myself and dont think i will ever change, as you know it got lots of options for gear clips and hoops which i think the petzl lacks.
  24. you will just have to know the basic prusik. its easy to tie using a prusik loop. check out Best fishing knots and rope knots. are you doing any training before doing your assessment???
  25. just bought a dolmar ps52 today( 350 all in) it came with a 18 inch bar and one of those metal carry cases. girlfriend cut a load of firewood today and thought it was a great saw. normaly she uses a 346xp and apart from being a bit heavier and not as " cute " looking she rates it very highly. only thing against so far is the chain break is not very ergonimically designed
