  1. Doing tree surveys today.
  2. Thank you for your replies. I look forward to collecting the milled timber
  3. Took down two of these, produced some nice logs,12 cubic of chip and found a pair of pliers grown into the tree. Does anyone know what type of Cypress this is please?
  4. It has been a fantastic Canterell season. My mate picked a wheelbarrow full in just a couple of hours.
  5. Buying a smart phone and not having a guy in the office has improved the quality of who I work for quite a lot. Where as before I might be driving 30 mile to look at a plum tree old Bob used to snip for a tuppence I can weed these people out early on. On average the best clients come in via email as they have better things to do than ask 20 questions about trees.
  6. You are right. He was jailed for fraud,I and he were under investigation although my innocence was proven early on,I still had to pay the twat out. My lawyer compared it to performing a sex act upon another man.
  7. "To me making a payout is almost an admission of guilt - why make a payment if there is nothing to defend yourself from?" Because sometimes it's just the lesser of two evils. I had to buy my website off my former business partner who stiffed me for at least 200 grand, I also had to pay him a gratuity in order to take over the company despite him being investigated for fraud. I could have dug my heals in and rightly demanded it all for free, or tried to apply the principles of fair play. Unfortunately the world doesn't work like that.

That's something I have never heard of. Do you have a picture?
  11. Had a bloke call yesterday. " Hi I would like a quote to remove some branches from a couple of trees that are hanging over some power-lines,I want to fell the trees myself and I am afraid the branches will drag the lines over" Sorry I am not interested in the job,I don't work around powerlines. " What!? I have tomorro off and need to get it done asap" Real shame that mate, best of luck.
  12. I have found people less willing to wait for a quote, before most accepted it would be later in the week or next week if further out of town. People seem to want the quote NOW! Perhaps because they are working from home and have more time to meet someone during the day? I have also noticed more " could you just?" Requests when on a job,but I think that is directly attributed to the client being home when before they were at work.
  13. Late in the year most companies are laying off guys for the winter, head over in the spring. How long do you plan on coming over for and how old are your kids? Here is the immigration website for Norway, flow charts and all. www.udi.no
  14. Reverse the tractor up to the branches then position the trailer at right angles to it for filling. Everything was parked out of the way In that picture because we were going to rig out the tops. Then chip up the resulting idiot pile.
  15. When your walking it around the back in the cut next time, try lifting the powerhead just slightly, really almost like lifting a shopping bag with a liter of milk in it.Makes a huge difference as the chain isnt getting squeezed by the weight of the saw bending the bar slightly at the edge of the cut.
  16. Those trees in the picture have most of their weight at the back due to the long limbs and lean. The more you cut out of the front (ie deep facecut) the more weight you are transfering to the back and the harder they will be to jack over. If the Tree is near vertical, the more you cut out of the front, the more you transfer the weight forward making it easier to fall over.
  17. You need big bucking spikes if you are working large timber, all mid to large saws in other countries have them. Back chaining you need them Cutting over the back of a big log Cutting the scarf into anything with buttress roots Working anything thats as long or longer than your bar Running the saw around the backcut you need them There are some real whopper tales on this thread.
  18. They have a higher chance of going sideways like you say, bigger gobs are for snags to shift the weight forward when there isnt much of a top to help tip it over.
  19. Plenty fast enough thanks farm boy.
  20. West Coast is nice, work almost all year. Always vacancies In Vancouver but it's expensive to live there and not very social. Save up some money, get a work visa and head over in the spring. Trip around and find out for yourself. Definatly get your HGV and trailer licence before you go.
