  1. Excellent idea.   2. i agree. i think it looks good to be able to say you have one too on biz cards and bills etc.; and is fairly cheap. Also; i think as a portfolio; you can take stuff ya write and pix from forums and maybe get something out of it; have it all in a collected place; and thereby have more reason to have quality input to forums. i think topics come up that you might have thoughts on etc, that you just wouldn't think about sitting down and writing. So, the forums become that idea generator. Also, it is becoming cheaper and cheaper all the time to do this, and more and more people are using web to find services. This leads us to learning to assemble it right; to get higher ranking pages. On a wide scale this would be tougher. But, if there are 100 tree services in your area, and 10 have sites; and 2 really try to work the SEO, you shouldbe able to be found if someone searches for tree service yourtown?

Hey Kev- Leverage of the CG is greater to fall/ more ballast of weight /angle to target on fall side of hinge; but that is a trade-off to loss of helpful forces on opposite side of hinge/compressed part of the hinge as pivot point more precisely? And yes, less weight(on load side) to lift and more ballast (on fall side)to help that lift. For, of the 3 positions ballast, load and pivot; altering pivot is always the most dynamic adjustmeant; for it is hooked to/effects both the other events. Where by the other events(ballast and load) are only hooked to one event(pivot) directly. So, pivot's changes take from 1 side, and give to the other; giving 2 changes at once for or against hitting target(thus the expression 'a pivotal change'). Thus increasing ballast and decreasing load in 1 move... Whereby, Increasing ballast or load, just changes that factor, not the opposing factor (IMLHO). If the compressed part of the hinge is the pivot; the closer said pivot is to the lift of the wedge/prybar; the less leveraged length multiplier of said lift? Yes "too far back..." but also less side to side control; as then the hinge narrows? Also, the release is all at one point/concetrated; more violent; than release fibers spread?
  4. i stop before center to place back of hinge at widest part/center. This gives the widest pulling part of the hinge that is opposite lean; the most pulling power IMLHO. Which is most exemplified in a tapered/triangular shaped hinge. this widest part in tapered hinge is up against downward pull in a horizontal limb swept horizontally. To really test theories of hinging and felling; i think climbers have the advantage of being able to test same theories at diffeent angles to see if they hold water. i prefer wide enough face to fold as far as i want before tearoff. Which is sometimes wide. But, usually on ground; just normal/easy face. In tree; rigging and swinging over, or bending it over far to pretitghten it's own line and tearoff later to have less drop and shock line less(works in combination with the tighter line fr less line shock); i use wide face more. But, then that is in smaller wood than felling, so easier to cut all that wood. Loggers use humboldt more; and the hard part of the wide face is the upper slant of that. The downward would be just an easy ride down after fighting a big saw uphill. Because in tree/in such situations i treat hinge as a 'disposable rig line' at butt, that i use so far; then cut free. So a normal rig line becomes a 2nd rig line; and this butt tie/ hinge is a helper rig line to place load into normal rig line. The farther you bring hinge back; the more ballast of tree weight is helping the fall. But, the less leverage wedge and prybars have. i also dutch with a kerf on lean side when i have to. This offers the non-lean side as path of least resistance/ gives lift to the lean side. In horizontal sweep, that is the downard side of the vertical hinge. Dutch across full face is what really gets you in trouble; offerning no path of least resistance at full and early close; more like jsut kerfing a head leaner.
  5. When needed i take a 'tire spoon' maid for a semi-truck. It is a super tough lever; with a flattened end; that fits in a kerf nicely. i kinda bounce on the end to get bodyweight impact X leverage length. But, at the same time i add a push to the top of the load; of course it is the bar i'm pushing off of; so that push counts 2x. Because neither the bar nor the load is an immovable anchor(edit: well they both are anchor points when top isn't moving/so can input force but not distance; but at action/movemeant both are points that distance/not just force can be input into; both disatnces going into load after leveraged multiplier); therefore both are distance/force input points. So i have (2x push + body impact)X leveraged distance from compressed part of hinge as pivot. At the same cost of effort of pushing against top while on 'ground' and the equal opposite of that push + bodyweight going into immovable anchor/ground and not as a distance quantity on the load. This is usually enough to pitch something or force a strong hinge. If slick or tapered; i might cheat and cut a small humboldt as a pushoff point.

  7. i've found myself patting a tree's trunk; like apologizing and/or promising to make it as painless as possible. Witch is really taking Doc Shigo's invitation to touch trees a lil'far i guess.. Sometimes i feel so bad about it; i feel like an executioner trying to calm the 'patient'. Or like Dr. Christian (ez to remember!) Szell/Lawrence Olivier in "Marathon Man" patting Dustin Hoffman on the shoulder to be calm before Szell practiced his art... Of curse; it seems like no time to ask the tree "Is it safe?"
  8. One of my favorites at werk; when someone is using a hand truck-while i'm trying to get them to place the CG over the axle for less effort: "What the axle don't carry; thee azzhole does". When kidded about pink paint to id my tools(red is lost in grass by color blind guys); i even feed the fire; git'em to run thier mouth more, let them run with it; then pro-claim: "Real men have pink tools"; ends the conversation abruptly; as all their energy they built up is now turned against them. When called a puzzy(i guess these are gittin' into comebacks/one upmanship): "Well big guy; momma all ways said you are what you eat" (usually they are too dumb to notice i just called'em gay until i'm out the door) Another favorite from Danny Partrige(Bonaduce): "i refuse to engage in a battle of wits; with one i have come to find is so feudally armed". i really like Big Al Smith's warning about: "Not getting in a pissing match with a skunk". i also like claiming/reminding that the physics equal and opposite is the equivalent to the philosopher's yin and yang. Also, that the first philosophers were the first physcists; as it was recognized as one body of knowledge of power, covering everything under the same forces on the same planet. (Kinda my condensation of a great book "The Tao of Physics"). Sorry, can't help it.... Of curse; a true, true favorite is the one i apply to physics/friggin'riggin, philosophy, people, romance etc.; and found in my sigNature...
  9. i guess i have a mix; mostly leaning towards knew school; especially for climbing. Rigging; i'd like to say olde school; i mean i like Natural crotch work; but i like my slings too. High friction supports i think work best for low impact rigging. But high impact rigging, with real weight i think 'newer school' works. Mostly to have more rope in system before major frictions (use pulley to have more rope length taking hit of impact) and allow running of line through Porty (friction and slip without burning) etc. Some of my high friction and rope sweating to pre-tighten, then laying load into line to pretighten more before tearoff; some say is new(er) school; but i accredit pre-mechanical ship worx for the techniques(which i consider kinda old school). http://www.mytreelessons.com/Pages/Caught%20on%20Camera.htm
  10. i've seen some wimmens who could outwork the guys on the ground; but not the general rule... As far as attitude; mostly i've seen better, from the few ladies in the field i've seen. But, people are people; and any can have a chip on their shoulder. As far as climbing. Ladies can be smaller, with a lower center of balance too. Lack of strength can make them depend more on technique, than brute force; which in time can get them further than most guys in some situations. They can also have a calming effect on the 'bullpen'; as well as more manners seen from the same 'bullpen'. These are generalities; and they can be different.......... just like real people!
  11. i think a lil'easier yet is that it is 224.8 pounds of force; so you can feel better about rounding it to 225; or 2 1/4(2.25) x 100. Rather than the 224 given in the link. So that 16kn is about equal to (32 + 4)x100; or 3600# of force. Rounding error is .2 x 16; or a meager 3.2# less than the 3600; for 3596.8 actual. Also, mass and weight can be said to be the same on planet Earth, different elsewhere. Mass is the amount of matter:inertia(resistance to change in velocity); while weight is the amount of pull of gravity on a given planet.
  12. If using M; you have to pay out/gather 4x instead of 2x the line for normal DdRT. Also, if M is with false crotch; you have to be carefull. Because if you just remove false crotch; you now have DdRT with a self tender; which is on top of your friction hitch/ not below. So, therefore; you are tending your knot to go down/ not up- not good! i'll also double crotch off my rigging line; iff ("if and only if") i have primary life line in; and am really fully dependent on it; and never use the secondary for part of '2count'/all ways use lanyard as 2nd when cutting etc.
  13. i've done mine like that. Also, similair for Cow with large line on large tree. Feed eye out of bucket and short of target and lay on ground; then feed bight around tree. slip bucket with rest of line thru, then take half hitch around bight. Lastly, tighten up mess by feeding eye (that fell short of target location) thru bight. Eye should be big enough (Bowline or spice) to keep knot/splice a foot or so behind bight. so only the 2 solid legs of eye take brunt of loading; and the 'joint' takes only buffered loading.
  14. You should have faith in the construction of good gear; part of this is knowing the tensile strengths etc. But you should check it's condition; and your application of the gear. A 7k line doubled over to holding you with both legs is farily sound...... if it is in good condition, and you tie knots properly and don't cut it. So, this is a mutli-dimensional answer; partially dependant on your knowledge of the gear, it's condition, your application of said gear; and no accidents...

But, also, that depends on what you are used to. 026 with 18" sharp in soft, unfrozen wood will perform satisfactorily compaired to a throwaway saw of lesser brand like Wild-Thing with long bar if that is all you are used to. If on the other hand; you favour a 044/440 with a 16" bar for speed and power; you'll be real pissed at your choice of new saw and think of using it as a door wedge, wheel chock or boat anchor; assuming it would be any better for any of those uses:BoomSmilie_anim:...
  19. So much of my understandings of how stuff works comes from tree work. i all ways had the philosophical slant. But really came to realize the joining of philosophy and physics understanding from tree work; as it constantly reminded me that the first physicists and philosophers were the same people. The laws were the same in each, so L-earning 1 could give insights to the other as in Body of Knowledge. So, sometimes having a positive attitude comes down to apprising what you have; and smiling and capitalizing on it. For having something means losing something/ it's reciprocal. So you could cry or smile; you can capitalize on loss or gain. History is filled with stories of nations being conquered; just to find the genetic pool was then thinned down to the tough; and they were pissed and won back what was lost etc. It just depends on where the variables are dialed to; and what you can make out of that situation to your needs. So, you keep 2 strategies; to capitalize on which ever way the ball bounces etc. i think a tree in the woods has a (PMA)positive mental attitude; either the leaf stays on the tree to protect, store food and feed the tree; or on the other hand it might fall to the ground, protect the ground/roots, store it's food until it feeds the tree. Dialed to such a win/win; how could it not have a PMA? Trees are bigger, live longer, taller, heavier, levraged than about any other life form. We can learn more from them, than teach them through our misunderstandings (but, i guess that is another topic). From:TB - TIP Loading "This can be even more confusing; there are some tradeoffs happening. Because the more load per length of line gives more elastic dampening. The dampening can bounce against your climbing; or catch you and buffer impact to you and TIP. In SRT anchored at ground level; you have a potential 2:1 effect of loading on the TIP. But; the more friction (and wider open angle) the less 2:1 effect. But, then the less elastic response from the rope; and the TIP itself. The elastic response can either fight you climbing or save you from impact. The spread angle reduction in TIP 2:1 loading will not reduce the rope elastic response that works by length; but will reduce the TIP elastic response that works on loading(as well as change the direction of that loading to an angle where the TIP weight itself is less 'impact' on the loading elastic response). SRT terminated/choked at TIP; will have less elastic loaded area; more like SRT anchored at ground with friction dialed up all the way on TIP as a variable. So, we have less bounce, but also more impact if a fall etc. At some point; of such a shock load; we'd rather have the 2:1 load on TIP with more elasticity to dampen... DdRT; will have less TIP load(when not to a pulley with line anchored at ground). So, will have more of the loading of TIP terminated SRT. But, each leg of the DdRT will carry half the load of the SRT; so the DdRT will give less elastic response if it has to catch you. This will matter more when close to the TIP than far from it. There are no easy, across the bored answers. Maximum safety/production/loading/whatever is dependent on needs and variables per situation. i all ways think the 1st step is to recognize the variables involved. 2nd, picture them as round volume knobs on a stereo; to get different effects on the system. 3rd, recognize a binary code; whereby each variable that stands to help you can be flipped; at sum point and can be maid to stand against ye. This is the wonder of Nature; with seemingly infinite combinations; any of which can be good or bad; depending on what you need, or how you capitalize on what you have. Having anything increased guarantees the reduction of it's reciprocal value; each of which is a power; that can be capitalized on. So each change has a gain and loss..." Hope i'm not pushing my luck here; this is just more of how i've understood the grueling risk taking of climbing; and how it has related to life to me. what i think one can bring home to outlast the paycheck and callouses. One of my favorite acronyms is: L.U.C.K.= Labour Under Controlled Knowledge. (well that seemed on topic anyway). Thanks for h'earing me out!

Cuz as i told Steve; i've let peaces of this out here and there on other forums; to get blank stares at best... i teld da'wife and keeds about here too; saying that ya know my Body of Knowledge stuff i've talked about with you; these guys at this knew forum actually listened!! Maybe i'm not crazy after all(well, yea i know; i shouldn't get that carried away and say that...) Reg and i been pm'ing at the Buzz; i sent him more of these thoughts and where sum came from etc. But i lost my copy and am waiting for him to send it back (always feels cheaper and faked trying to remeber and write outside the initial moment of inspiration), or post it (hint, hint).
  21. Some bro's been messaging me; i get the pop-ups; but jsut went into User CP->Options and turned on email notifications for PM's so i wouldn't keep anyone waiting and wondering... Because i kinda found out they were off by default.
  22. You can tell someone about something; and they think they know all you do. Someone; can read about something; and say they know all about it. Another, can watch something and feel immediately enlightened. One can operate hydralic levers for a day; and claim lifted this and that. Another, can swing a hammer; use it as a device extension of self too. Just as a young man can work here and there for a few weeks; and brag to one that has done the same job as they for 30 years... Each can increasingly develop more feel for the work; understand more things through it; especially as they have to apply themselves more. But, i don't think any can develop the feel and knowing for the work, the forces and other related things as does a martial artist, gymnast or (tree) climber etc. There is something extra special, extra deep of experience and tuning in available to those that touch and conduct forces through themselves as lifter, controller, load and to load. Those that can feel every tourque, balance, force and extension as they also direct it; feed back waht is going on and adjust to it. This is the Body Knowledge level of experience; richer, and in more contact/touch than all the rest. This is what we see in the ancients and martial arts i think; somehow intuitively catch and respect. Well praticed arts and understandings of the world through the body experience and thereby knowledge of the world around them. Lessons of leveraged extension, force and balance etc. These lessons remind one that the first physicists were also the first philosophers; as both were one body of knowledge. Each subject to the same rules and forces on the same planet. Thus that the equal and opposite reaction is just the physics reperesentation of the yin/yang; as is +/- voltage; male and female etc. All exactly the same but different; and as such; understanding any deeply; can give rich insights to the rest. This is another reason i think we are lucky to be climbers; the chosen few as it were. To tune in to this depth of experience; also intensified by our life on the line-literally. And to also deal with the rawest of forces, so much larger than ourselves. For we are truly the ants to these matchstix we command. This "Body of Knowledge" must be better than any book, movie, story; or knowing such things thru push levers and hammers. Just another thing right their for us; within our grasp; in ways not extended to others. Perhaps some lifting the large loads with hydralics; can in time come close to such realizations; if they really tune in; and become seasoned after working them for years. But i doubt it without really doing the grunt work first for awhile; understanding the balances and forces; and respecting what the machines are doing for them. You just don't get the same payoffs with out those investmeants. Just as you don't get the same feel for all things; without touching everything at once; and being the load, machine and brain that all the forces travel thru, you feel and adjust to. The life of tree work and climbing; is more than just food on the table; and has more to give than that. i hope a buch of ye brethren already know this, no matter how scantly; and i am jsut reenforcing it; bringing it into the light.
  23. SRT is Single Rope Technique; DRT is Double/2 Rope Technique; DdRT has been coined as Doubled Rope Technique. The first 2 are usually non-retrieveable rope setups. But the latter/last is the usual arbo, retrieveable rope technique of the rope folded/doubled over the support. Whereby; 1 end is terminated on the saddle; and the other leg slides through a frction hitch; that (the friction hitch) is terminated at the saddle. Like the 2nd setup in the imbedded drawing; where the climber lifts/lowers self; rather than controlled by a ground man (1st setup).
  24. i try to stay psyched that lifting is compressive on bad back; while climbing is opposite; light traction on back. i've got 3 blowed out disks on right side. So; the left works harder and goes into spasm from tension pulls on it as it tries to make up for right side when lifting.
  25. i'm serious about this; am just trying to present it fresh. i guarantee the amount of time taken for writing, drawings and animations to convey these ideas over time; should alone mutely denote that. i didn't see it all for awhile; so don't fault those that don't now. i was doing all these things as independant of each other; not looking at them as all consistent with the same prinicipals of maximization. So now study them all as one body of knowledge. Cross comparing them to each other; to find doorways thru any to see deeper into each. So i present them as what might seem as a disconected flood; but what really is all the different aspects of the same thing; in differnt ways. Offering many doorways to the central prinicpals. So others can lift the walls out between the seperate rooms of information on each. Thus have more on all; at once. i've all ways hoped that climbers that live and rely on the DdRT would make the connection; through their familiarity with DdRT; and how it relates to all these topics. That they more than any would have the 'feel' for these things, because of this. i've always been the little guy trying to keep up. That is how i found these things. For, just as an older person has less life force pushing out; so then can feel more of the changes in tide of a conversation, mechanics and weather; so as the lil'guy; i saw these things. Because everything is a tradeoff; so it just depends on how you capitalize on what you got in trade for what you don't! So, the strength in weakness; is the ability to tell the gradient differeances between things. The real strong can bull dog thru all; and not tell the differances between them (unless they slow down and trust their own 'feel' to find the way). All my lessons on leverage, and this '2Handing' etc. have been reiterated to me with my bad back as i try to go on. Instead of holding me back; i try to use the injury as a more sensitive instrument to tell the differance between the powers of certain strategies! i tell the kids; doing your best is not just about your reputation; that is just icing on the cake. Doing your best; is about the most intense lessons laying at the division between can and can't; do or die. Focus on the mainstay; and enjoy the icing too. So, anyway; it is all right there. We are told that each action, has an equal and opposite reaction. i just focus on folding both from my effort to the target; instead of just half the forces like we usually do. Basically find a pivot to reverse the flow of the equal and opposite to align to the effort; so both work on the target instead of just one. Then add body weight. The 2 part system (effort and bodyweight) can allow one part to hold the load at bay; as the other part impacts, or both impact at once; for even more power. Or, something like that.....
