  1. Ah finally. Can we get an answer on which chipper is best as well ha ha
  2. I agree it would be interesting to see a breakdown of the statistics of qualified/non qualified individual accidents.
  3. I suppose they'll just grab a hot topic with lots of posts? Does that mag come out every month???
  4. Shamelessly ripped from http://www.aie.org.uk A HSE request for information - http://webcommunities.hse.gov.uk/inovem/inovem.ti/afagpublic From the HSE Arboriculture and Forestry Advisory Group Webcommunity - 01/05/08: STATISTICS SHOW US THAT THE VAST MAJORITY OF MAJOR AND FATAL ACCIDENTS IN FORESTRY AND ARBORICULTURE ARE ASSOCIATED WITH CHAINSAW OPERATIONS. HSE'S INVESTIGATIONS SHOW THAT MOST OF THESE ACCIDENTS OFTEN INVOLVE SAWERS TAKING SHORTCUTS AND NOT FOLLOWING GOOD PRACTICE GUIDANCE. USUALLY THE REASON IS TO SAVE TIME. ARE YOU A CHAINSAW OPERATOR? DO YOU WORK WITH CHAINSAW OPERATORS? LET US KNOW WHY YOU THINK THESE ACCIDENTS KEEP HAPPENING AND WHAT CAN BE DONE TO REDUCE CHAINSAW ACCIDENTS IN YOUR SECTOR. Responses to this request to [email protected] I was thinking we could run this as a collective response. We'll build up a thread and I'll mail it through to the HSE webcommunity. So, I know that we've been over accidents before but I'd like to frame specific responses to the chainsaw issue. Its not clear if they mean top-handles or groundsaws so any experiences that any of you have that relate to the above would be helpful. So, does commercial pressure results in accidents?
  5. Consider it done, (if they ever get round to putting it out!!). Exactly Chris. You've got to be in it to win it! I can't think of a larger more vocal collection of arbs than on here!!!!
  6. I've just read my latest Arb Journal in which Lonsdale gives a summary of what might be in the new 3998. I was just wondering how many of you guys and gals are familiar with the contents of the current BS?? I'd also like to arrange a group response from arbtalk members to the new standard when it becomes available for consultation.
  7. 54 climbers? That's one hell of a turn out - good stuff
  8. Has the smoke got out of the wires somewhere?
  9. I think I'm addicted to shiny things. I saw a three way locking revolver the other day and had to have it. Aluminium junkie... so sad.
  10. Aaaahhhhh. You need to tick both boxes, one yes and one no depending on what you're up to. That should sort it We haven't actually had any apps through the portal yet so I've fired off a couple to see what department they end up in! I've applied to fell everything in the local conservation area!
  11. Is that in the forms tab? which part?
  12. What section / tab within the process is kicking you back?? I've just done a dummy run for a CA and it worked fairly easily, but then I'm making it up and you've got real info.
  13. Cheers for that Alex. It goes a long way mate.
  14. Well. I'm done for another year. Funny really, me judging. I mean, who would let me judge anything??? Once again a great weekend. As always, the main aim of this comp is to show off to joe public with the aim of raising the local profile of arborists and climbers. This is real back to basics stuff. If we can show people what real climbing or real chainsaw work looks like, they may think twice when the ubiquitous cowboys rock up with the mcculloch and the stepladder. As a side benefit - we get to test our talents in a friendly, open and cooperative environment. Oh, and drink too much beer and goad our mates into going on the reverse bungee after a night in the beer tent! I've attached the final and overall results as an excel spreadsheet for those out there who are interested in such things. So what were my highlights of the weekend as the head judge?? Realising that the event organisers had made a mistake and given me a proper tent, big enough for my landrover!! Nick Potts turning up and happily doing the commentary (cheers mate). Nick's experience on the mike showed in his ability to actually make talking about ropes sound interesting to the layman! Ross Kite, a kiwi working in the big smoke, jumping from green target 3 to target 4 and making it look ridiculously possible (it isn't!) Last years winners faces after watching Ross Kite!! Gutted! Watching Tully King (who's been climbing for 4 months) bust out a redirect and show everyone else how its done. Alex Laver having a laugh (even if he was the only one ha ha ). Andy Campbell doing his traditional karaoke stint in the beer tent - Johnny B Good careful mate, people will think its a regular thing! Pressuring Mr Bullman into doing two climbs (Sorry mate, that's what you get for being too good). Meeting all those new people and seeing the faces behind the usernames! Congratulations to Daryl Platton for winning the Open. Well earnt mate, all that training paid off! Also to Oli Husar who took home more prizes than he could handle, HUSAR!!! And finally to Tully - what can I say mate, except you're in the open next time! Many thanks to all the competitors for putting on a good show. Thanks to my fellow judges; Glen and Jim for trawling through all the gear and running the paperwork, and to Nick for helping me score and for doing the commentary for two days. Thanks to the comp sponsors; Arbtalk & Arbjobs. Cheers Steve and Nick. And thanks to all the companies that dug deep into their pockets for the prize fund including Martin at MJ Tree Services, Rob at R Bell, Spider & Kev at Rouses, and many more (apologies if I've forgotten anyone). Thanks to all those who helped Andy out on the Cutting Side as well; Alex, Andy, Colin, Woody and many more. Finally a HUGE thank-you to Chalky & Gillian for organising and managing the whole thing. Good job sir. East Of England Cutters & Cutters 2008.xls
  15. Well. Had our demo today and it turns out that the LITE is exactly the same animal as the full fat picus. Except that there are fewer sensors and no in the box bluetooth capabilities. It would appear that Picus' are available off the shelf with the following designations 4 sensors - No bluetooth = PICUS LITE 6 sensors - No bluetooth = PICUS LITE 8 sensors - No bluetooth = PICUS LITE 10 sensors - Bundled w/ bluetooth = PICUS 12 sensors - Bundled w/ bluetooth = PICUS The software is capable of combining mulitple configurations of the sensors on the same tree. I.e., you can stick twelve nails in the tree and move the 4 sensors into 3 different positions to give 12 locations - the same as the 12 sensor model. If you felt like it, you could do the same with the 12 sensor to end up with a 36 sensor result?!? No I couldn't be bothered either....
  16. Andy - I didn't realise previously that you were trying to submit an application via the planning portal. I tried this afternoon as a member of the public. All in all I found it a bit buggy. I had to keep skipping back to the overview section to get sections accepted and to finally submit the app I had to log out and log back in. No wonder few people attempt it! I only tried a TPO app but I'll try a CA on later. Maybe take some screen shots if that will help any one. I'm working on a example application as a paper copy at the moment so I'll scan it in and post it up.

A more detailed review and write up will follow (and yes Chris, it probably will be an essay so you'll have to get Amy to read it to you!)
  19. When I get a moment, I was planning on filling one out and scanning it in. A kind of model app if you like. Worth noting that even though we might be happy with an app, other councils might have other ideas...
  20. Sorry to hear about that Nod. Man that pisses me off. Can someone perhaps post some example pics so we know what to look out for.
  21. Frayed knot. Seen most if not all of them in action though.
  22. 30th May mate. I'll update afterwards
  23. I could never work in London. Looks like a good job for someone though.
  24. husky stuff fits into the vertex - don't spend out on new stuff if you don't have to!! I hate those gloves!!! Too thick and they turn your hands black when it rains. Sounds like a bit of classic regate. That'll be fine. maillions? get more karabiners. They've got more uses and you won't need to take a spanner up the tree!!!
  25. Wow - I hope when I'm 47 I can be as condescending and as ignorant as that. Only 8 posts in as well. I can just imagine some guy sat in front of his screen last night, absolutely outraged by the confidence of the young. How dare she talk back to Mr Ed!! How very dare she! What is the world coming too??? I must make a stand!
